HG3170 From its tour of duty with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department comes this very attractive Smith & Wesson K-38 Combat Masterpiece Stainless, numbered model 67, First Engineering Change. Its 94K5000 range serial number dates it to 1981; it came into service, then, during the tenures of two distinguished Californians, Sheriff Sherman Block and President Ronald Reagan. 1981 was also the final full year of Bangor Punta owned production with the distinctive anchor rivet or pin through the frame that held the barrel in place. The Model 67 is 4 inch stainless, fully traditional with 4 inch serrated rib pinned barrel with red ramp front sight and black leaf adjustable rear sight; Square butt grip frame serrated fore and aft; .265 Satin Stainless serrated trigger and matching .375 semi-target hammer; LASD issue Pachmayr SK-L Grips; six shot capacity of .38 Special and .38 Spl +P ammunition; 32 5/8 ounces weight empty. Action, of course, is traditional double- and single-action with internal transfer bar safety mechanism. LASO had this revolver on double action only, and we restored it to single and double by re-cutting the lower hammer face where it contacts the trigger. Surface detractions are only moderate, only occasional holster buffing and edge scouring. We rate it as Very Good, close to Excellent finishwise, 85 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, should suffice for prospective owners to judge finish grade for themselves. It is excellent mechanically. Blast effect to the underside of the frame top strap directly above the barrel's forcing cone is minimal, only a faint shallow etchy groove that traverses the width of the top strap. Cylinder face to forcing cone gap measures a perfect .007. Double action trigger pull is steady and consistent, and the cylinder times correctly, before the hammer break, in all six positions on double action. On single action, the hammer travels an additional 20 degrees on all six after the cylinder times, and the single action trigger pull is a crisp 2 5/8 pounds.
