This Smith & Wesson Highway Patrolman has its original issue lanyard ring intact, and it is thoroughly original and traditional, 2nd engineering change of the Model 28. Its N294xx serial number dates its manufacture to President Nixon's Inaugural Year of 1969. It came from a local estate, and its late owner had notes that it was North Carolina Highway Patrol issue, but we cannot document that one way or the other. Surface contact wear is minimal on our view; only faint whitening on some of the sharp edges, moderate cylinder rotation marking, and moderate surface wear to the right Magna Grip panel. We rate it as Very Good, close to Excellent, since 85 to 90 percent of its original finish is intact by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, should suffice for interested parties to judge finish grade for themselves. it is Excellent mechanically. Bore, cylinder chambers, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Blast effect to the under side of the frame top strap directly above the barrel's forcing cone is minimal, only a faint etchy line with no significant depth. Double action trigger pull is stiff and consistent but original; and the cylinder times at or before the break on all six positions. On single action, the hammer travels and additional 10 degrees or so on all six after the cylinder times, and single action trigger pull is a crisp 3 5/8 pounds.
