Here is the immediate ancestor to the current production Mossberg 590 A1, the 500 C in Parkerized finish with 8 + 1 capacity, 20 inch barrel with steel sights. Front sight is sweated-on blade type, and rear sight is steel folder with elevation calibrations. Buttstock and forend are traditional serrated Corncob configuration forend with paneled-grip black buttstock that has a 1 inch smooth rubber recoil pad. Both pieces are high impact polymer. Metal is parkerized finish on the barrel, magazine tube, and double steel slide arms, with black matte anodized finish to the lightweight alloy receiver. Safety, as the photos show, is traditional Mossberg top tang, polymer construction and user-friendly for southpaws. This particular 500C has been on duty in a private financial corporation protecting its deposits, employees and depositors. Its J900000 serial number range is the same as its mates we bought new from Davidson’s in 1988. It has been stored, handled, and carried more than it has been fired, attest the minimal whitening on the magazine tube and slide arms. Surface scouring is moderate, and the magazine tube exhibits extensive dark toning, but the parkerized finish is more than 80 percent intact by our estimate. Receiver has extensive small scours and streaks, and we estimate that 20 percent of its surfaces are affected as well. Buttstock and forend show only minimal contact evidence. We rate this 500A as Very Good, about 80 percent finishwise, but photos should suffice for prospective owners to judge finish grade for themselves. Weight empty is a surprisingly light 6 7/8 pounds. Magazine capacity is 8 + 1 on 2 3/4 inch shells, and 7+1 on 3 inch shells. This Mossberg is Excellent mechanically; bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Current pricing on the descendant 590 is upwards of $600 apiece in our area, and they’re scarce even 2 years after the election. We’re offering this 500A, however, probably manufactured during the late Reagan Years, for only $ 269.95. Not transferable to civilians in Akron OH, or any jurisdiction where pump shotguns with 8 round magazine tubes are restricted.
