The US Rifle .30 Cal M1, designed by SA's John Garand, is one of the most significant rifles of the 20th Century. Adopted by the US in 1936, the M1 was any army's first standard semi-auto rifle, and served as the US's main battle rifle through WWII and Korea. The rifle's accuracy, ruggedness, and firepower far outclassed any of the bolt actions fielded by the Axis or Allies in WWII. Built around a rugged rotating-bolt, gas-operated, semi-auto action and firing the accurate .30-06 Gov't rd, the M1 also dominated service rifle matches for decades. This rifle is from SA's pre-war production. Restored to match-grade standards by the CMP, Expert Grade rifles like this are prized for their accuracy, quality and historical value.

M1 rifles are renowned for their strength and performance. Accuracy is generally top notch with the adjustable GI aperture sights. Except for the stainless gas tube, all metal has a durable parkerized matte olive/gray finish. The wood stock & hand guards are new, straight-grained walnut bearing the CMP cartouche. The gas-fed, semi-auto action is remarkable for not using a detachable mag. An en-bloc 8-rd clip charges the fixed mag, and internal linkages work the follower to feed rounds. The system is strong and reliable. The receiver has a build date of Oct, 1940, over a year before the US entered WWII and just 4 years after the M1 was adopted by the Army. Over the past 75 years, most M1's have been arsenal reconditioned at least once. This rifle is no exception. The unique thing about an Expert-grade rifle is that it has been hand-picked by CMP armorers who go beyond the usual grade inspection to completely recondition the gun. The new CBI barrel (CBI 2/22) is made of 4140/50 chrome-moly steel, cut to M1 mil-spec 6535448, hand-lapped and held to match-grade tolerances. The bolt bears part number “D6528287 IHC/X”. The fitted hard case bears the CMP logo.

Condition is as-received from the CMP, who grade it “Expert”, roughly NRA Excellent bordering on Very Good. The barrel is factory-new with 100% finish; bore & chamber are mint, bright with sharp rifling. The muzzle and throat gauge 0+ and 0+. The action, and follower linkages are clean with intact finish. The action working surfaces (follower, bolt head & lugs) show just a trace of burnishing. The bolt's exposed top has patches of old pitting now stabilized beneath later parkerizing not affecting the bolt body. The clip-release also shows traces of old pitting below finish. The gun is clean and well lubed with a smooth, strong action. Receiver finish is 98%, even and not thinned, including most edges, bearing surfaces, and raceways. Two exceptions are: a lightly stained left receiver flat in places & thin seams of old stabilized pitting under the parkerizing just below wood on the sides. Trigger-guard & mag-floor-plate finishes show a few light handling scuffs. The delicate gas tube finish has been redone and is close to 100% although the right side shows a line of moderate but remediated old surface pitting under the finish. SS gas cylinder lock finish has completely worn off and a small spot of corrosion shows on the lower right. The gas nut is new. Stock condition is New a99+% with only a small ding in the left receiver cut out. The butt plate, swivel/stock hardware are CMP-new essentially 100%.
