Up for bid is an authentic very large very rare early hand forged American Civil War Confederate “D” guard Bowie knife imported by Courtney & Tennant circa 1861. The Blade is 17 1/2 X 2 1/2" with an overall length of 22 inches and is marked "COURTNEY & TENNANT CHARELSTON. S.C.". D guards were popular with confederate soldiers early in the war and are hard to trace because a lot of them were homemade and unmarked. This being a very large knife that was used and imported by a prominent company early in the war makes it a highly collectible and sought after piece that has multiple collectible aspects. When you hold the knife you can feel the antiquity and how the sheer size would have empowered and boosted the moral of the soldier who wielded it and why it was popular amongst confederate soldiers early in the war.
