Serial number on this genuine Thompson / Center New Englander Muzzleloading Rifle is R575xx, and we estimate it was manufactured around 1989 or 1990. It is a local rifle, not fired that many times, but not cleaned that many times either. Its chief detraction is its bore. While there are no visible deep pits, there is etchy rust residue that affects about 30 percent of the bore, some of it close to the muzzle. Still, it is as clean as our photographer could get it, and it is mechanically excellent as far as the locks and hammer. External surfaces would probably grade Excellent or close to it. There is rust residue around the nipple thimble, but the threads are good and the nipple removes easily. On a strict external grading, it might rate 90 percent. The synthetic stock is one of the first ones issued on a New Englander, and surface scouring is minimal. This variant, of course, is discontinued, a marketing victim of the once popular in-lines.
