Model 1898 Wehrmans Gewehr manufactured by Haenel. This rifle is built like the Mauser 1898 except that it was built for competition shooting. It is chambered for the 8.15x46R German target cartridge, and it is a single shot. These rifles are very rare and are hard to come by. This one is in very good shape with an excellent bore and excellent wood. The wood and metal all match too. The old timer who had this one replaced both of the sights. The front has a simple barrel band with a bead on a post. The rear is a Williams, but could have been originally a Lyman. The Lang “Roller Coaster” rear sight is not with the gun. You can see in the photos where the sight base was pinged with an asterisk at the 6 and 8 hundred meter marks. I am told that these marks correlated to striking the 100 and 300 yard targets with the 8.15x46R. The stock has NOT been duffle bag cut and it is stamped with the serial number of the rifle. I have a source for well made, reasonably priced brass if you need to purchase some. And I also have been successful in ordering the original H&N bullets from Germany as I shoot several rifles in this caliber. Its my understanding that these single shot models are the type that were used in the ’36 Olympics, with a specially built rear sight that was adjustable for both windage and elevation, and set up for 100 and 300 meters. We have another Haenel single shot which was duffel bag cut and has the Lang sights; its no where near as pretty as this one as it has minor damage on the receiver from having been hammered on. The bluing isn’t as good either. However, it’s bore is also excellent! This rifle is at the gunsmith having the stock’s duffle bag cut repaired. If you have any questions, please let me know. Credit cards add 3%, we offer a 3 day non-firing inspection period. Must ship to an FFL and shipping is $40. Thanks for looking. Strength and Honor!
