Description: We see fewer of the Marlins with chain store names from the 1960s than we do of the Winchesters, but very few any more of either. There was no sacrifice of Micro-Groove workmanship in this specimen of the jobbed-out 336 under the Wards Western Field title. Its model number is 740AE-MN, and part of those suffix letters came from the fact that Japanese optics began flooding in during the 1960s to compete with the already popular and economical Weaver Steel Tubes made in El Paso. Apart from the lettering, the only cosmetic differences between this Wards Variant and the Classic 336C were that these had a somewhat duller finish; a bit more matte on the vertical receiver surfaces and less gloss to the walnut. Note that this .30-30 has its original alloy hammer spur sans the JM trademark. Forend cap / stud bracket is single assembly blue steel, not as well polished before bluing as the Marlin marked 336. Barrel is standard 20 inch with full magazine tube that holds 6 rounds. This is a locally owned rifle; we had a Wards Store in Memphis until about 1978, and that is doubtless where it was purchased by a hard working hillbilly breadwinner who had settled in Memphis with his family. Original bluing is strong throughout. We rate it at 80 percent with the remainder brown toning, mostly on the lever and matte surfaces. Walnut is a handsome plain oil finsh with moderate scouring on the buttstock that affects perhaps 20 percent of that area. 3/4 inch original brown recoil pad completes the 13 3/4 inch length of pull; and the pad is Marlin factory as well, only with no Marlin logo in its center. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. We're offering this Wards Western Field 740AE-MN variant of a Marlin 336 from President Nixon's Inaugural Year for only $ 359.95
