Here is a very attractive specimen of the original Sig Sauer Compact, the P228 chambered in 9mm: 9mm Parabellum, 9mm Luger, call it what you will; The 9mm. This specimen’s finish is better, in some respects, than a factory CPO refinished Sig, or even a new one. Its slide has been Teflon coated by our friends at Black Ice Coatings in Utah, one of the most durable finishes on this planet. Slide coloration is traditional OD Green, making for a distinctive two tone finish, with the black anodized grip frame, barrel, and hammer. This 228 has served and protected our Swiss friends in Lucerne District, with that subdivision’s counterpart to our State Police. Lucerne Shield is factory stamped on top of the slide. From its KC Date Code, it was manufactured in 1992; and this pistol is thoroughly German, and serialized on its frame, slide, and barrel. Its only U.S. marking is PW Arms import stamp on the right side of the slide, as the photos show. It is standard traditional double action: from a resting hammer, a long double action pull on the first shot, and then single action until the shooter engages the decocker. It has the automatic firing pin safety system used on previous Sig Sauer pistols, and the magazine catch can be mounted on the left or right side to suit the operator's preference. An essentially closed design concept renders the P228 particularly resistant to dust and dirt. The 228 is the best quality 9mm Compact pistol on the market, emphasis on best more than on Compact. It is the smallest variant double-stacked magazine capable descendant of the definitive P226. This P-228 has a matte blue slide, and matte anodized lightweight alloy frame. Barrel is 3.9 inches 6 groove 1:10 rifling; weight empty is 26.1 oz; length 6.9 inches; height 5 1/4 inches; maximum width 1.5 inches; 5.5 inch sight radius; 10 pound double action trigger pull; and Sig's classic crisp single action pull at 4 1/2 pound vicinity, with negligible felt creep. Magazines are Factory Sig, made for Sig by Mec-Gar, 13 round LE Marked ban period, both of them Swiss Police issue. One has a flashlight mount on its floorplate. Sights are polymer filled white dot, refurbished from the old night sights. Frame levers and magazine release show moderate whitening; apart from that, residual surface detractions are not readily conspicuous, a few matte spots on the frame where we retouched it. Grips are new replacement Hogue. We rate it as Very Good, perhaps even Excellent, refinish. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. It is certainly Excellent mechanically; the Swiss Police are among the best worldwide for weapons maintenance. Lateral play to the slide is minimal, but this is normal for Sig pistols. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are bright, clean, and excellent. Replacement price on this pistol in our area, if a person can even find one, is upwards of $1,000.00.
