A wonderful Ruger Hawkeye manufactured in 1963 and chambered in the .256 Winchester Magnum cartridge that was introduced as a necked down modification to the .357 Magnum cartridge introduced in 1960. The Ruger Hawkeye was produced as a single shot pistol that used a swiveling breech block to achieve a sealed lock-up over the single .256 Win Mag cartridge placed directly into the chamber end of an 81/2 inch barrel. After firing, the spent cartridge case is ejected by means of the spring loaded ejector rod mounted beneath the barrel similar to Colt Single Action Army revolvers. The rear sight is adjustable. The front sight is a wide serrated blade on a ramp mount. The two piece grips are walnut with the Ruger emblem disc inset in each. Reportedly, production numbers during the two years of production, 1963 & 1964, were approximately 3300. The highest serial number that L & M Enterprises has owned was 3202. This example is Serial Number 1913. These pistols are enjoyable to shot with good balance, long sight radius, good triggers, and light recoil for a cartridge that produces around 2700 FPS muzzle velocity with a 60 grain soft point. As to condition for this Hawkeye, we assume that the pistol has been shot, but the condition says "very, very little shooting, if at all"...it really appears un-shot, but somewhere in its life, a gun smith added one screw hole to the top strap....professionally done....but an "extra"...so we assume the owner shot the pistol. There are a couple of handling marks / finish rubs on the heel of the grip strap. The barrel muzzle has a finish rub on the outer edge that looks like the result of box storage rubbing. This Ruger exhibits several areas of Ruger Red Lighting.....hairline "lighting" traces in the blue finish of the frame. This "lighting" characteristics can be found on a great many of the Ruger Hawkeyes and is sought after by some collectors and avoided by others. Several of the Hawkeyes that we have kept for the L & M Enterprises private collection have the "lightning" bolts and we have grown to accept them as a normal production characteristic for the Hawkeye. Regardless, the Hawkeyes are a one of a kind pistol, strongly collected, and scarce. Here is your chance to own one that you can shot and enjoy.
