1944 K98 - 7.62 Israeli Rifle with Nazi Markings!
Ok, where the heck to start with this one, Ironic just does not even start to describe this? This is a K98 Receiver that was clearly made by "BYF" Mauser Werke A.G. Oberndorf-am-Neckar in 1944. On the left side of the receiver the firing proof (WaA135) has been penned out and replaced by an IDF marking. On the right side of the receiver they clearly missed the firing proof (WaA135). Below that, there looks like a "97," but I have no idea who or what that is. On the top of the receiver there is the famous 7.62 indicating a NATO caliber. However, in the center of the "6" you can see the third WaA135, with most of the eagle still visible. So one was penned out, and two missed! The metal on the receiver is nice and even, and it may be the original bluing? Now for what looks like the best part of all, the bolt handle has the same serial number as the receiver, however, the bolt is non matching to itself. I don't know if this was re-numberd by the arsenal or if this truly is the original serial number on the bolt. The front sight hood is definitely Israeli, but the the front sight is defiantly Nazi in origin, clearly showing the WaA25 under the eagle. The barrel has a few clear Israeli markings, see photos. The bore looks like it is in excellent shape, used with lots of shine. The hardwood stock looks Beach to me, with what appears to be an oil finish. Only a few handling marks, but she is beautiful to hold. The handguard looks new as well, but the fit looks off from the rest of the stock. The front band is on upside down and backwards, and there is a lot of gunk under the front sight hood. All in all a very interesting rifle, just the pedigree alone makes it a very valuable find. I've seen many of the imports of Israeli K98s, usually FN contract rifles, but this is one of the few I've seen that were remade from Nazi stock. Kind of Ironic because this rifle was used to defend the new country of Israel.
This old girl came from an estate, so I have no clue as to the actual history or story. I guess you can make it up if you like? All I know is this is one cool rifle that is just jam packed full of history. If she could only talk, starting her life off in an evil Nazi, only to help give life to the Jewish Nation. I'm trying to price this so almost anyone can take a shot at owning her (pun intended).
