This listing is for the exact rifle in the photos. Please note that it has a set screw missing on its trigger guard and floorplate assembly. Here is a rifle that switched sides in World War II. Yugoslav partisans captured the retreating Nazi Army’s 98 rifles. In 1946, Zastava Arms plant set up shop in Kragujevac refurbishing and reissuing said rifles for the Yugoslavian Army. Barrel is importer stamped on its right side. Most of the German markings were obliterated, with Preduzece 44 stamped on the left side receiver and the Yugoslavian crest on the breech ring. M98 on receiver’s left side; Waffenamts on the bayonet lug cap, on the lower band, 3x under the rear sight, and on the floorplate assembly and one screw; Weimar stamp under the bolt handle; and likely internal markings are German. The balance are Zastava, Yugoslav, including the serial numbers. Receiver, floorplate, and cartouches are matching Yugo re-numbers; bolt handle is close, but a mismatch. None of the German numbers match. This rifle is nowhere stamped 98/44 like the later 1950s guns were. Manufacturer was Nazi Germany’s Military Complex, principally Mauser-Werke. Type is 98 Bolt Action Mauser Rifle. Chambering is 7.92 x 57, 8mm Mauser caliber. Construction is entirely steel metal, with original issue dark walnut stock and barrel guard. Barrel is German 30 inch, 4 groove 1:9 right hand. Sights are welded block front with steel blade insert, and calibrated 2000 meter military rear. Bayonet lug cap is slotted and threaded for an 18 inch, .200 diameter rod, that is Not included. Magazine is internal box 5 round with removable, not detachable, floor plate. Safety is 3 position cowl mounted. Trigger is .262 smooth face, pulls two stage at 6 pound vicinity with minimal felt creep. Buttstock length of pull is 13 3/8 inches, with a 3/4 inch right hand cast. Weight empty is 8 pounds 10 ounces with center of gravity at the breech face; with 49 inch overall length. Finish is arsenal reblue, with clear lettering. Note the the armorer slot splice in the stock right side. Apart from those, surface detractions are moderate, principally stock scouring with finish wear on the bolt and edges. We rate this rifle as Good refinish, 70% by our estimate; but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore shows extensive etchy texture in the rifling lands from being fired with corrosive primed ammunition. Inside receiver and cartridge follower show very little use. We estimate this rifle’s barrel was fired fewer than 500 times. Replacement pricing on German Mausers often approaches the $1,000 mark.
