The Navy wanted to save money on rifles kept aboard ships. Instead of buying M14 Rifles, the Navy converted US M1 Rifles by fitting new barrels chambered for 7.62x51mm NATO and so marked. The magazine has the white spacer installed to prevent 30-06 from being loaded. The Navy discovered that sailors turned in better range scores when using the Mk 2, Mod 1 Rifle. You should see in the photos the marking atop the rifle, "NAVY" over "7.62 MM" and again on the barrel, These were new barrels made in that 7.62MM. Upon range testing, I was able to turn in very tight groups at 100 yards. Very hard to find in this condition with clear markings. More details and photos upon request.
