One thing West Tennessee is known for is its season on the Pryocon Lotor, the North American Raccoon. Every Year, we celebrate the sport with a very politically incorrect St. Jude Coon Hunt in Decatur County. We’re not the only ‘coon hunters; this 12 inch barreled Harrington & Richardson model 686, comes from a home with fellow hunters in Southern Illinois, not that far from us. Even with our many hunters, handguns with barrels this long are far from common. From its AU serial number prefix, this 686 was manufactured in President Reagan’s Election Year, 1980. In addition to its long-barreled eccentric appearance, it is a beautiful revolver. Barrel, cylinder and trigger guard are blue steel, while the frame, trigger and hammer are Color Casehardened. Sights are High Partridge blade front with windage and elevation adjustable rear. One piece hardwood grips are original. Surface detractions are minimal on this H&R. Hammer sides exhibit faint amounts of spotting, with even fewer and fainter similar markings on the casehardening. Sight edges show faint whitening. Grip shows moderate scouring on its butt edges, but original gloss finish is strong throughtout. We rate this 686 as Very Good, perhaps even Excellent finishwise since no more than 10 to 15 percent of its surfaces are affected by any detractions. Photos, at any rate, should suffice for prospective owners to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, cylinder chambers and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Note the condition of the casehardening and the cylinder faces. This revolver has been fired very little, and certainly not dry-fired.
