This good looking rifle is very clean and operates smoothly. The stock is very nice with no cracks and has not been sanded or refinished in anyway. Minimal of the normal handing marks one would expect from a 117 year old battle rifle and it’s MUCH better than most Commission rifle stocks out there. The stock cartouches are also all presentable. The bore still has sharp lands and some shine to it with frosting in the grooves that would benefit with a decent cleaning. The bbl shroud (the shoulder thing that goes up ) is matching and is dent free. Lots of GEW 88’s out there have dented shrouds; this one is perfect retaining the original blue mixed with an even subtle plumb patina. The only thing it needs is it's detachable rear sling swivel, which are easy to find. I just never got around to it. This rifle is from my personal collection. It’s the very first 88 I owned and It’s been a safe queen even since. I’ve never fired it so I cannot attests to its accuracy or safety if you so choose to shoot it. I personally feel by the condition throughout, it would be a fine shooter and a joy to hand-load for, but as with any antique please have a qualified gunsmith inspection.
