In simpler days, there was the 220, 225, 226, and 228 among the Sig Selection. This is one of Sig's first efforts to accommodate demand for high capacity compacts smaller than the service size 226. The 228 debuted in 1990, and this one's date code is KD, manufactured in 1993, the fourth year of production and four years before the 228 was discontinued in 1997. This is the 228, black matte finish. Barrel is 3.9 inches 6 groove 1:10 rifling; weight empty is 26.1 oz; length 6.9 inches; height 5 1/4 inches; maximum width 1.5 inches; 5.5 inch sight radius; 10 pound double action trigger pull; and Sig's classic crisp single action pull at 4.4 pounds. Capacity is 13+1 rounds, and this pistol is furnished with a total of two 13 round Sig LE factory magazines. This Sig 228 is all German, with West German slide markings and proof marks on its frame. Finishwise, we rate it as a strong Very Good. Whitening to the frame edges and levers is minimal. Slide finish has a minimal amount of discoloration. We estimate than no more than 10 percent of its finish is affected, but photos should suffice for prospective owners to judge finish grade for themselves. It is excellent mechanically; bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Magazines are 13 round Law Enforcement ban period factory mags, moderate insertion and ejection surface scouring but excellent spring strength.
