THIS IS AN ATTRACTIVE RECREATION OF A CLASSIC PERIOD KENTUCKY STYLE LONG RIFLE, CIRCA 1820. THE .45 CALIBER RIFLED BARREL IS UNSIGNED. HOWEVER, THE INSIDE OF THE LOCK PLATE IS STAMPED R. HAMM AND THE INSIDE OF THE PATCH BOX IS STAMPED R. SOUTHGATE. BOTH RUSS HAMM AND ROYLAND SOUTHGATE ARE KNOWN TO HAVE BEEN MAKERS OF CONTEMPORARY MUZZLE LOADERS, BARRELS AND OTHER PARTS DURING THE PERIOD AFTER WW2 AND INTO THE SEVENTIES. SO, ONE CAN CONCLUDE THAT THIS FINE RIFLE IS AROUND FIFTY YEARS OLD...THE 42" BARREL IS ONLY 13/16" ACROSS THE FLATS. THE BORE IS EXCELLENT WITH NO ISSUES. WONDERFUL, PRECISE, ADJUSTABLE DOUBLE SET TRIGGERS... THE NICELY FIGURED FULL LENGTH MAPLE STOCK HAS A LENGTH OF PULL OF 14". THIS RIFLE WEIGHS JUST 8 POUNDS AND IS SO WELL BALANCED THAT IT FEELS MUCH LIGHTER. THE TANG MOUNTED REAR SIGHT AND NAVAL MOTIFF AT THE TOP OF THE WRIST ARE UNUSUAL. OVERALL FINE CONDITION WITH NO ISSUES... WONDERFUL ARCHETECTURE WITH FINE AGED FIT AND FINISH. THIS PIECE LOOKS LIKE IT COULD BE 200 YEARS OLD! WISH I KNEW WHO MADE IT. BET THIS RIFLE IS A TACK DRIVER WITH THE RIGHT LOAD. HAVE SEEN ENOUGH OF THESE CONTEMPORARY MADE LONG RIFLES TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AMATUER AND PROFESSIONAL WORK...THIS ONE LOOKS LIKE IT WAS MADE BY A HIGHLY SKILLED GUNSMITH AND ARTISAN. ANY INPUT AS TO MAKER WOULD BE APPRECIATED. PROOF OF AGE REQUIRED TO PURCHASE. SOME GUIDELINES: All cartridge firing firearms must be transferred through a licensed FFL dealer in your state.
