A beautiful,Spanish, smoothbore, percussion cap, slug gun. It has a rear sight, a patchbox in the butt, and cheekpiece stock all of which makes me think it is not a shotgun. The stock is also fitted with sling swivels. The stock is carved with a finely executed Boer's head at the wrist and a star, in relief, on the cheekpiece. The top of the 35 inch barrel is beautifully gold inlayed, " En Eibar Por Jose Beistegui Anno 1857". Jose Beistegui was a well-known Spanish gunsmith who is known for his fine rifles and pairs of pistols. He was active in Eibar at least as early as 1855. The barrel on this piece is not round but multifaceted. The Migulet style lock is very fancy with the hammer in the shape of an animal. A lever protrudes through the lockplate which holds the hammer in cock. This lever retracts when the trigger is pulled, releasing the hammer. This type of lock is often referred to as a "dog lock". The bore is about .72 cal. Overall length is about 50 inches. This is really a nice piece. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS ON REQUEST.
