Here is a historic specimen of Smith & Wesson’s .38 Military & Police Hand Ejector series that served stateside during World War II, and has served since that time as a duty and reserve weapon with the Trumbull Connecticut Police Department. 975000 range serial number dates it to 1941 or 1942, concurrent production with Smith & Wesson’s contract Victory Model Revolvers. Type is Single and Double Action Revolver, entirely steel construction, five screw pre-1950s pre-K frame. 4 inch standard service Pencil Barrel, pinned into the frame, with half moon barrel-integral front sight and fixed notch frame-integral rear sight. Weight empty is just under 30 ounces, with center of gravity at the trigger. Hammer is .265 hammer nose type firing pin, correct original hump style with checker serration spur, with matching serrated face service trigger. Caliber is .38 Smith & Wesson Special, capacity is 6 rounds, and this revolver was not designed for +P ammunition. Grips are period correct factory Smith & Wesson Victory type walnut; lanyard ring assembly, or proper factory name butt swivel assembly is factory as well. This revolver was refinished at some point, we estimate in the late 1950s or early 1960s. Lettering is strong throughout, but the trained eye can discern that the surfaces were buffed during the process, most likely performed at the Smith & Wesson factory. Surface detractions are moderate, with a dozen or so deeper freckles on the sides of the frame, less pronounced freckling on the upper and forward surfaces. We rate this M&P as Very Good / Refinish, 75 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. This M&P, Pre-Model-10, has been maintained very well. Bore, cylinder chambers and mechanism are all bright and clean. Double action trigger pull is smooth and consistent, and the hammer travels an additional 5 to 10 degrees on all six positions after the cylinder times in double action. On single action, the hammer travels fully 35 degrees on all six after the cylinder times, and the single action trigger pull is a tight but crisp and original 4 3/4 pounds. Lateral play to the cylinder is moderate with the trigger relaxed, about 1 1/2 mm; but with the trigger fully depressed, minimal, 1/2 mm. Cylinder face to forcing cone gap is a perfect .007. Blast effect to the under side of the frame’s top strap directly above the barrel’s forcing cone is minimal, a faint etchy streak with no depth that traverses about 4/5 of the width of the top strap. This revolver has not been fired with corrosive or +P ammunition. It is eminently serviceable and collectable, and a worthy colleague to the surviving Victory Model peers. We’re offering it for only $ 439.00.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> $15 lower 48; $40 Alaska, Hawaii or Puerto Rico, USPS Priority, insured with Delivery Confirmation.
