70,000 New York Permit Holders Are Now Felons for Failing to Register Handguns

Authors Current Events S.H. Blannelberry

On Thursday of this week, more than 70,000 New York pistol permit holders woke up as felons.  Law-breakers.

What was their crime?  They didn’t register their handguns with the state.  Now, why on God’s green earth would they have to do that?

Emperor Gov. Andrew Cuomo rammed through the NY Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act in 2013.  This insidious law requires pistol permit holders to register their handguns and recertify their licenses every five years.  Failure to do so is a Class E felony.

The objective was clear.  Build a massive central database of every handgun owner in New York.  Not only who they are and where they live, but what handguns they have in their possession.  Hmmm.  Why would a government want to know which citizens are armed?  I’ll leave you to answer that.

“We’ll have for the first time a statewide handgun database that will allow the state, allow local officials to check periodically,” Cuomo said while pitching the SAFE Act, adding, “You don’t want criminals and people who are mentally ill to have guns.”

70,000 New York Permit Holders Are Now Felons for Failing to Register Handguns

Just to be clear, the trooper in the video above says that criminal possession of a firearm is “a misdemeanor,” not a felony.  Well, according to this screenshot from the SAFE Act, it is a Class E Felony.  Goes to show you that even law enforcement is confused about what is what. I also like how he said there’s a “good chance” if you missed the deadline that your permit will be revoked. Contradicts the messaging that you won’t be penalized for late registration.  Right.  You’ll just lose your permit altogether.

Right, because violent criminals and murderous madmen register their firearms.  And to catch these evildoers, all police are going to have to do is consult this handy-dandy database.  Crime fighting at its finest.

For over 370,000 New Yorkers, all of whom were issued a permit before the rollout of the SAFE Act, the deadline to recertify was Jan. 31, 2018.  This past Wednesday.  Estimates suggest that only 300,000 followed through with the mandate.  Meaning, approximately 70,000 or more did not.

To calm the nerves of worried gun owners, state police have said they will not prosecute those who “unknowingly” missed the deadline.

“The state police are not going to penalize those people who fail to recertify unknowingly by the deadline,” said Beau Duffy, Director of Public Information for New York State Police.

“What we’re going to do is continue to accept recertifications past the deadline,” he added. “We want to make sure everyone is aware and has the opportunity to recertify so we can have the best records possible.”

Okay, so the state police aren’t going to punish people for “unknowingly” missing the deadline — at least for now.  But what about the county judges and officers in charge of issuing permits?  Don’t forget, New York is a May-Issue state.  Permits are issued at the discretion of county judges – not state police.  How will these county officials respond to those who missed the deadline?  Will they start pulling permits?

“It’s in the law but I don’t want to speculate how they’re going to move forward on it,” Duffy said. “It would be up to each office to make that decision.”

Let’s unpack that.  Duffy has no idea how your local county official is going to respond.  That judge may revoke your permit.  He may not.  Glad we cleared that up.

To state the obvious.  This is a disaster.  The whole thing.  And I didn’t even say how much it’s costing taxpayers.  You ready for this?  $28 million, according to NPR.  Wow!  Talk about a giant waste of money.

My favorite aspect of this whole SNAFU is this answer on the Q&A page of SafeAct.NY.Gov.  The question reads: Will permit holders’ guns be confiscated if they can’t prove they recertified?

The Answer:

To be clear, the State Police will not be confiscating weapons from those permit holders who fail to recertify by January 31st. This provision was never intended to be a “Gotcha” for pistol permit holders. It was included in the law that was passed by the legislature and signed by the Governor in order to update the accuracy of both state and local records. To that end, the State Police will continue to accept recertifications throughout 2018 while we continue to update the database.

What a lie!  This whole system is a “gotcha” scheme.  As Cuomo said, it’s for police to “check periodically…” What are they checking for if not to confiscate guns from those who shouldn’t have them?

Watch what happens down the road.  Two or three years from now.  State police will be checking the list regularly for people with expired licenses.  Why?  Because they’re felons under the law.  They are guilty of criminal possession of a firearm.  Consequently, their guns will have to be seized.

Is this somehow a shock? New Yorker’s started getting their gun rights stripped over a century ago with the passage of the “Sullivan Act.” Mayor Fredo is such a rabid anti-gun leftist, after Sandy Hook, he rammed yet another gun law down NY’rs throats behind closed doors. Every law enforcement officer in the state woke up a criminal because that moron included a magazine capacity limit & didn’t exclude police. It’s sad but hard to sympathize. New Yorker’s keep electing & re-electing these loons.
We’re being pushed into a war people. These power-hungry zealots are are gonna push & continue to push taking more liberties as they go. They think they have their fingers on the pulse of the nation. But they believe the nation only includes the coasts.
There are already millions frustrated, suspicious, & angry already. If the leftists think the whole country is going to fold like NY they are sadly mistaken. But they’re so arrogant they’re still gonna try.

…and again, now in New Zealand.
Man kills 50 in mosque shooting; state (NZ) revokes rights for which millions gave their lives protecting.

  • Mark July 15, 2019, 10:27 am

    Right on Brother GaShooter!
I’m a native Atlantan for 63 years, CCW 42 years; zero offenses.
But even our deep Southern firearm rights narrowly missed a bullet as pro gun control Stacey Abrams (D) took 48.8% of the popular vote (90% of which came from just one small cluster of counties around Atlanta; go figure!)
My point, these transplants are bringing their liberal, anti-gun beliefs and are disproportionately (by land area) affecting our longstanding values as a State.
America, beware! Be Aware! It can happen, even here in the Deep South.

    1. The New State Law says There Pistil Permits will Expired too! If they will registered there Hand Guns too! There Permit only holds 5 Hand Guns only too! Is the Maximum too! If they Want to buy 6 Hand Gun They will apply to get Second Permit too! Agree! Buy the Sixth handgun too! Required Another Permit too! True!

This trooper is full of crap, he stats, “Most other states require this and you have to pay for it”. Please have him name those states!!!

  • Shooter313 April 18, 2019, 6:15 pm

And WHO are these morons going to sent to TAKE these so called firearms? The state police? I will NEVER believe that people who have sworn to uphold the Constitution would attempt such a stupid action.
I have a few friends that are New York State police officers. ALL of them have told me they would NEVER attempt such a stupid order! Firstly because they don’t believe in it, and secondly because they don’t wish to be shot dead for doing something that stupid!
Personally I believe these to be some VERY SMART people!
Clinton already polled the military back when he was president, asking if given a direct order would they attempt to disarm the American people. No one that had served for more than two months said they would obey that order. Again, some more very smart people!
So, that leaves these moron polititions to do the job themselves!
That I would give a shinny new quarter just to watch!!

  • Michael December 7, 2018, 10:30 am

I understand why someone is hesitant to move from an area where they and possibly their family have lived for a long time. Unfortunately at the end of the day, one has to decide to work hard to fight the stupidity and shortsightedness of “govern”ment “leaders” or to decide where their next home will be. Here in Texas it has become a continual fight to prevent those from California and other “liberal/progressive” states from mucking up a good thing here. Fortunately, many who have fled those undesirable states have embraced the independent spirit we love here and have helped keep our state pretty much a conservative one. However, this recent senate race between Senator Cruz and Mr. O’Rourke provides an excellent example of how money and influence from outside one’s state can so dramatically change the landscape. Regarding O’Rourke – let this be a warning to the rest of our countrymen and women – “Beto” is a scam artist and has and will do whatever is necessary to advance his own career and agenda. Fortunatelky Texas hasn’t voted a Democrat into a statewide office for over ten years now and we didn’t in 2018 either! As the cartoon here says (showing a picture of Mr. Beto O’Rourke), “Meet Nacho – Nacho Your Senator!” We here in Texas will continue to work hard to stave off the infection of rising democrats, continue to legislate true democracy for all, and protect all of our God-Given rights and documented in the Bill of Rights of our United States Constitution.

I’d like to says “It’s been a hoot”, but it hasn’t. It’s been a damned nightmare.

It’s all about control! I’m not talking about controlling the criminal.. All these bad laws only affect the law abiding citizens!

    • GaShooter March 21, 2019, 3:26 pm

Exactly!! What they don’t tell you is that it is illegal for criminals to register their guns . . . . cause they ain’t supposed to have one in the first place! The SCOTUS ruled that it was a violation of their 5A to require them to register a firearm!

      Ain’t that a hoot?

As my username hints, I’ll stay in my pro-gun (you can buy anything and carry anything – not registered) state.

Quit your bitching lately it seems like all the mass killers are law abiding gun owners and white collar deplorable facts. All my weapons are registered good laws too bad they do not work

  • Joe M February 8, 2018, 10:31 am

What may not be clear is that an unlicensed handgun is an “illegal weapon” as defined in the NYS Criminal law definition. Look it up. In the same law, possession of five illegal weapons is a class C felony, possession of ten or more is a class B felony. Look it up, this has always been on the books (meaning prior to the UnSafeAct). Those who now have no permit and possess 10 handguns ARE CLASS C FELONS now. Also remember, the Counties have been required to send the permit information to the NYS Permit Bureau for years. The ability to easily update that must have been a nightmare as there is no uniformity between counties though it is a NYS Carry Permit. Now here is the real rub, NYS has started suspending drivers licenses for things like; expired auto inspections, failure to pay state income tax (guilty till YOU prove innocent there) and other CUOMO revenue generation items. What this “re-certification” does is to tie your guns to your NYS Driver’s License (or non-drivers ID). The Counties never required that. I suspect 70,000 people will be without a drivers license real soon if they don;t knuckle under to King Andy. BTW, it’s only 69,999….. I know of one that is no longer in possession and has long since lost the permit. He can’t go down to the clerk’s office and update due to medical condition. At some point I will present the death certificate to the county and clean it up. Hopefully the national cross state right to carry passes.

    • Scott Ramey February 13, 2018, 11:53 am

My firearms are not illegal, they are simply undocumented and located in my sanctuary house. They are dreamers.

  • Chris Baker February 6, 2018, 1:00 pm

Just a another blatant and egregious violation of the rights of law abiding citizens. The state of New York has no legal authority to violate the federally recognized right of the people to keep and bear arms. How many other rights do you have to ask permission to engage in such as freedom of speech or the freedom to travel. This is no more egregious than it would be for them to say you have to get a permit to walk down the street you live on. It’s no more egregious than it would be if they said you have to get a permit to say something out loud.

  • Malcolm Tanneryte February 6, 2018, 6:39 am

The trooper said “most states already have gun registration…”
What states? Former Soviet states? Stop spreading propaganda pal. Most states do NOT have gun registration!

    • Rahel March 1, 2018, 9:08 pm

      He means Nazi Germany!

    • Mahatma Muhjesbude April 13, 2018, 1:33 pm

Well, technically every state does have some form of permanent gun ‘registration’ if they sell guns through dealers that require NICS. Contrary to popular myth through government propaganda, your ‘background check’ info really does Not get automatically deleted after a few days but remains in full view of any inquiring LEO minds in the performance of their official ‘duties’ forever in some cloud base. And of course your 4473 remains on file in your dealers place of biz until he goes out of business and then is required to turn them in.

How do you think they find out so fast where these shooters purchased their guns? Soon as they get their names, it’s a simple check if you have police computer access. I demonstrated this all the time to people who imagine the government does not keep a de-facto registration. Every gun that has ever been purchased on a form 4473 can be tracked, until the buyer turns around and sells it privately. Which of course ‘They’ are working on ‘fixing’ that ‘loophole’ as soon as they get enough ignorant sheeple to look the other way.

I can see the Visa ad now:
“Totally unnecessary database tracking people New Yorkers honest enough to register their pistols: $28,000,000
Excuse to gratuitously deny them handgun permits: Priceless.”

    • Ron Herb February 5, 2018, 8:18 pm

The problem people should see is that every county in N.Y. already has a database with all of the pistol license holders pistol information. It would have cost less for the civil servants to transfer the necessary info to the State Police.

Seems to me that some government shenanigans could come into play pretty easily. I see that I have been getting phone calls lately that I should not be getting. Coincidence? Maybe.

      …Ron

  • Big Tom February 3, 2018, 9:01 pm

    • Scott smith February 4, 2018, 9:55 am

I don’t believe these are CCW permits, rather permits simply to own/possess a handgun.

  • Scott February 3, 2018, 11:29 am

There is one scenario not covered in the story: those gun owners who sold or gave away their pistiols and are no longer in possession. I am just waiting for the police to kick down their door and search their premises only to find no violation of the law. Lawsuit, lawsuit. Is the failure not to recertify probable cause in light of the weapon is no longer in their possession? Really big lawsuit. Big, big. Supreme court ruling lawsuit – and this is where the whole law is thrown out as unconstitutional. That’s right kids, failure to register your constitutionally guaranteed right to possess, keep, and bear arms becomes probable cause for an unreasonable search of your person and premises. 2nd and 4th amendment, with claims in other amendments such as 8th when bail is applied to a person who was exercising a constitutionally guaranteed right.

Funny how my fellow New Yorkers forget that the Republican led Senate voted to let this happen. In fact the Republican that voted for the SAFE Act is now the leader of the NYS Senate. What makes NYS so great is that its like a bunch of states in one. LI, NYC and the largest park east of the Mississippi. I live just north of the city and pay a lot in taxes, but I also enjoy better schools and services. If I call a cop, I get a Accredited officer in less than 5 minutes. I boat and ski and nothing is better than NY. Now as for certification, I sent mine in in early December via certified mail. I called them last week and they did not have it updated. This is clearly not acceptable. Take care guys and I cannot stand Cuomo, but his co conspirators are Republicans. Vote them out too.

“You don’t want criminals and people who are mentally ill to have guns.”

Is being mentally ill a criminal act now? Who is going to make determinations of mental illness? Will due process be involved in that action to see if you are fit to own a weapon? What if you are deemed mentally ill? Will the state then come and confiscate your weapon in lieu of any criminality? Also, you don’t want criminals to have guns. Thanks Gov. Cuomo, we don’t. So why is this law being passed then? Doesn’t NY state have a system in place to keep criminals from legally buying weapons? If yes, then doesn’t that defeat the purpose of this law altogether?

This is exactly why Florida is currently having problems. Although most full-time residents have no issues with current gun laws, more and more Snow Birds (northerners, mostly from MA, NJ, NY, MD and IL) are moving to Florida to retire. And as they do, they bring their anti-gun agendas with them and feel threatened by law-abiding Floridians who are permitted to carry concealed weapons and buy as many weapons as they want. They are urging lawmakers in Tallahassee to pass more restrictive gun control measures (magazine capacity restrictions and banning AR-15 rifles) in the guise of preventing crime and from events such as the shootings in Orlando from happening again. They should stay up north and leave us Floridians and our gun laws alone.

We are seeing the same in Texas.

      The snowbirds are winter visitors.
It’s the damnyankees that move down here and try screw things up as bad as the place they left. I guess they want to make the rest of us as miserable as they are.

Real Estate Agents have a name for the Yankees. “Halfbackers”. Those who move down to Fla., can’t stand each other and move halfway back to the mountains of Ga., Tn, N & SC. Don’t bring their silly shit to us. I have ______ number of guns and I have registered______________ of them. Nobody’s damn business what I have.

    • JASON PHELPS February 2, 2018, 2:05 pm

Don’t for get CT. LOL There are many of us from Mass. and Maine that agree with you, just not enough of us. I’m planning to go hunting in FL with my niece’s family. The libs from the three southern New England states are ruining the three northern states, also. Southern ME is lib, northern part voted for Trump. Vermont is gone and New Hampshire (Live Free or Die) is getting there!

    • KC Jailer February 3, 2018, 1:48 am

If it makes you feel any better, I’m planning to retire to a free(er) state within 10 years, along with a wave of like-minded co-workers. The Soviet of Washington used to be at least somewhat libertarian before the Californicators decided to come up here to create San Francisco North. On the other hand, I can always claim my AR-15 identifies as a flintlock musket…

  • Robert Lee Pruitt February 2, 2018, 10:10 am

For the life of me I do not under stand how the city of New York can change their Citizens into criminal over owning guns but let illegal aliens go free and what more protect them from Ice ! We live in a time that if Dems ever get in power again it will be the being of the end !

  • December February 2, 2018, 10:08 am

And a neat way to keep such people from ever owning or even touching another firearm. As a felon Federal Law prohibits unless rights restored by convicting state andv you think NY is going to do that?
State hardly has to do much, show up to renew and you just get arrested on the spot. Once that batch is taken care of easy enough to figure from registered holders where to go.

  • Stan d. Upnow February 2, 2018, 10:04 am

This is EXACTLY how it went in Australia, before they issued a Mandatory “buy-back” of all guns on their List.
Still have them? No-knock raids, confiscation, & arrest.
Welcome to the Peoples Democratic Socialist State of New York.

  • Nysad February 2, 2018, 9:59 am

Just so we are all on the same page: You have to have a carry permit to possess or purchase a handgun in New York, whether or not you carry concealed (no open carry). There has been registration for decades as part of the permit process. Some or all of the county clerks (who administer the permit system) already have their records computerized. Therefore, the government already knows who you are and what handguns you own. When the “SAFE” act was enacted, there was registration of so-called assault weapons. My understanding is that the compliance with this was low. However, there was no record of who owned what long guns (except perhaps the 4473 forms at the dealers). So there is not much that can be done about unregistered AR-15s and the like. In the case of handgun permit recertification, there seems to be much to lose and little to gain by resisting.

  • Clint W. February 2, 2018, 9:59 am

As a person who has camped with my family in upstate NY and visited with many NY natives, folks here need to realize that rural NY is just a normal as rural IL or CA, but they are overpowered voting wise by NYC and the other metroplexes where the majority of those with their handout live. Those folks might as well not even show up to cast a ballot. When you review county by county voting, you see a lot of red, as you do when looking at CA and IL. I have found them for the most part to be just as Southern as any Southerner when it comes to patriotism, the Almighty, and the Second Amendment. It may be time to look at large cities like NYC as an entity into itself, treat it like a state, give it one one H of R rep and one Senator, so those other folks have a voice. Don’t they do that with DC?

    • deanbob February 2, 2018, 12:46 pm

I’d guess the folks in the big cities would prefer things as they are so they can ‘control’ more (of all things political). While the founding fathers may not have envisioned the urbanization getting to where it is now; John Adams said “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” Some can twist “shall not be infringed” in the second amendment to mean what ever they want when the framers clearly said the constitution was to be taken exactly as written to avoid and misinterpretation. As judges have repeated ignored that, the latitude to misconstrue the constitution has widened to where we are now, and the unfathomably potion(s) people like Cuomo espouse.

This is a sad time in American history. Our children will be worse off for this course of “fear” legislature. “Give an inch-they will take a mile” and them some.

  • H Johnson February 2, 2018, 9:48 am

Where, in my state of VA, do I find my state & county/city laws?
Am I required to register all my weapons?
    Please advise.
    Thanks, HLJ

    • Sepp W February 2, 2018, 10:15 am

Not sure you are being cynical or serious, but I’ll bite.
Not required, and state has a preemption law. You do however need to be concerned with transporting or carrying in MD and DC. As a non-resident of either jurisdiction, you will be arrested if stopped and a firearm is found, either through admission, warrant/warrantless search, or the stop gets escalated to a felony stop. FOPA doesn’t seem to help in these jurisdictions even if you are doing everything FOPA says to be protected
      VA code here: https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode.

  • Bobo February 2, 2018, 9:32 am

I lived in NYS many years ago and got sick of the taxes and all the hassle and moved to the Southwest. All handguns had to be registered with the local county. A local NY left wing newspaper under the sunshine law got the list of all handgun owners in the county and published the names of the people, their address and a interactive map of where they lived. There was a big outcry but the damage was done. NY is headed down the road to the ultimate seizure of all firearms. What’s funny is that Albany is so corrupt that people have accepted it.

    • Stan d. Upnow February 2, 2018, 10:06 am

Yeah, and all that is totally ILLEGAL! The feds should have stepped-in and made arrests of those officials perpetrating that crap.

    • Sepp W February 2, 2018, 10:32 am

The people can change it; vote them out. I know easier said than done, but when the state or locality has a majority liberal demographic it’s hard for the minority to have a say. New York is becoming a liberal dystopia, if not already. It just a matter of time before they completely destroy it and they will. Liberals are good are enriching themselves and destroying everything around them in the name of social justice.
The liberals in Congress just showed the people they care ( a feigned care) more for illegal and unlawful aliens then for American citizens and lawful residents.

      • deanbob February 2, 2018, 12:52 pm

I just can’t fathom who would continue to re-elect the Democrats who believe that way ‘( care ( a feigned care) more for illegal and unlawful aliens then for American citizens and lawful residents.’); but, while fewer, there are some GOP congress people who I wonder the same about!

        • Sepp W February 2, 2018, 5:54 pm

Agreed. Republicrats besmirch, subvert, and undermine this administration in an equally audacious manner. W/o getting too far OT, the republicans sat on their duff for the last 8 years and did nothing to stop the liberal onslaught of America and it’s people. Same going on in NY.

  • Stew February 2, 2018, 9:28 am

That’s the very reason we no longer do business with companies in the New York or California states and even had numerous foreign supplies move their business operations out of those states. It would be a shame to have these states be able to collect millions of dollars of tax revenues.

    • Stan d. Upnow February 2, 2018, 10:08 am

Upstate NYer’s are in the minority. NYC is the driver of electing the likes of Cuomo and deBlasio. That is precisely why the Dumocrats want to do away with the Electoral College. It will give the large, Liberal population centers a lock on all elections forever!

      • Wade February 2, 2018, 10:46 am

And that is precisely why we elect the President through the Electoral College. Otherwise NYC, SF, CHI, LA would be calling all the shots all the time.

      • Eric M Vermeulen February 2, 2018, 11:19 am

Exactly. I live in upstate NY. Having traveled for a decade working I realized most of the country only thinks there’s a city and the rest of the state is uninhabited or something lol. NY is the exact example everyone should know and use to show why popular vote is HORRIBLE. If the nation ever switches to it America is done. Having traveled a bit I believe a major problem is NY and CA sand possible a few more states live in bubbles. I mean they own the news and the movies and almost all music/art culture. They think the entire country is just like them not realizing they are the actual minority of states. Hell I know how most must feel when the lines of Cuomo tell you how bad of a person you are with no idea (or care to know) what’s it your heart. After all, he did address most of upstate NY when he said “The Republican party candidates are running against the SAFE Act – it was voted for by moderate Republicans who run the Senate! Their problem is not me and the Democrats; their problem is themselves. Who are they? Are they these extreme conservatives who are right-to-life, pro-assault-weapon, anti-gay? Is that who they are? Because if that’s who they are and they’re the extreme conservatives, they have no place in the state of New York, because that’s not who New Yorkers are.”… I love this state but it’s run by idiots. Used to think it was worth fighting for, but realized it was a lost cause. Time to fall back to make a stand elsewhere not behind enemy lines here in freedom Nazi occupied NY. All the idiots who run these states are migrating like locusts and need to be offset with some similar called and thinking to the states they’re invading.

    • Hetta February 2, 2018, 2:16 pm

And as sad and unfortunate as it is, this country is headed that way.
There are record numbers of persons “prepping” for the civil unrest (war)

  • Jeffrey L. Frischkorn February 2, 2018, 9:18 am

Seventy thousand non-compliant handgun owners? And this is why a national handgun registry, government-demanded handgun turn-in, or the like is doomed to failure. Put another way, I will always have one more firearm than the government believes that I own…

    • Ron Herb February 5, 2018, 8:52 pm

That would be 70,000 handgun owners from 1968 to December of 2017. I wonder how many of those have since passed away or have left the state permanently? I agree, doomed.

  • Aardvark February 2, 2018, 9:15 am

We can expect the violent crime rate to virtually disappear in NY after this, correct?

  • Bruce in AZ February 2, 2018, 9:05 am

Democrats love making innocent citizens criminals and illegal aliens, citizens.

  • DEFENDER February 2, 2018, 8:35 am

Another reason why I will “Never” set foot in that city or state again.
The largest cities have the highest gun crime rates and the strictest gun laws.
I know a correlation when I see one. Especially one that obvious.

    • Hetta February 2, 2018, 2:16 pm

      Well said!

  • joefoam February 2, 2018, 8:27 am

Way to go New Yorkers. You elected these guys to rule over you. Now other cities and states will be emboldened and do the same thing. Comment above was correct, read your history. Nazi Germany wasn’t so long ago, it can happen again here.

    • Irv February 2, 2018, 11:34 am

Hey idiot not all New Yorkers voted these tools in as was stated the city pretty much runs the show so do so homework before you show your intelegence .

      • Hetta February 2, 2018, 2:19 pm

Typically, the ones who make comments like this are those who fail to make any effort to create change (ie: VOTE)

  • Bobby February 2, 2018, 8:09 am

Too bad the 300,000 did comply with this communist mandate…time to take serious action…where is the “Mafia” when really needed? (Yeh, it is now “underground”)…Is the Government of NY certain all real criminals, etc., have complied with this law!

  • KENNETH WETZEL February 2, 2018, 8:00 am

I say when they arrest the millions of illegal aliens for breaking the law, then you may approach American citizens. THESE STATES HAVE DONE SHOWED THEIR DISRESPECT FOR THE LAW SO WHY UP HOLD IT NOW. You can not pick and choose. Un Americans first. WE do not reward breaking the law with citizenship and then want to put our citizens in jail for the same thing.

  • Joel LaPierre February 2, 2018, 7:55 am

The 70,000 number is wrong! There are 1.25 million pistol permit holders in NY and right around 30% re-certified so that leaves 850,000 that became felons overnight. Talk about throwing the middle finger at King Cuomo.

    • John February 2, 2018, 8:21 am

I like what you are saying!!
I will give Cuomo the number 1 sign🖕🏻!!! Just another move to A Goverment take over!! 🔫🇺🇸🇨🇱🤠

    • Aardvark February 2, 2018, 9:11 am

I’m sure there were more illegal voters in the last election than that. Oh, it’s NY though, so that’s ok!

  • Ed Sunderland February 2, 2018, 7:51 am

The DOJ should have every entity in NY and every other state or municipality that is infringing openly against our second amendment rights and shutting this kind of business down with civil rights prosecutions on an industrial scale. But we do not yet have a DOJ.

  • Robert February 2, 2018, 7:48 am

This is exactly what the German government did after WW1 to comply with Allied gun restrictions for its citizens. Later the database was used to by Nazis to disarm their political opponents. It made rounding up Jews easier for extermination after they came to power. Read Stephen P. Holbrook’s “Gun Control in the Third Reich.” Why would anyone want to live in a society where only the criminals and authorities have the guns?

    • David February 2, 2018, 10:29 am

Why take the time to say the same thing twice… (Criminals / Authorities)

The right to KEEP and BEAR arms shall not be infringed. FEDERAL LAW! no special permits or registration, to keep (have on ones person) and bear (to have presented at rest / ready to be used in public view)

  • paul nobody in NY February 2, 2018, 7:43 am

Check it out – read the law – YUP they can confiscate ALL YOUR FIREARMS!!! they sent out 377,000 + letters , far short of all the permit holders in NY. and they wrote in the NYSP page they dont have to give you a letter, ignorance is no excuse for not registering – letter or not. Another source says NY has 1.2 to 1.5 million permit holders who HAVE TO do it.. I hope all of them sue ( class action suit) NY for taking ALL other firearms not just pistols.

    • Stan d. Upnow February 2, 2018, 10:17 am

The bastids made it a Felony. Felons cannot own Any type of firearm. Think they hadn’t planned this to achieve that end?

  • Chris Keyes February 2, 2018, 7:33 am

What the hell was that state trooper talking about. I don’t know of any state that charges a fee for owning a gun. They stayed up late trying to figure out a way to make us criminals. In their minds if you own a gun your a criminal.

  • David W February 2, 2018, 7:32 am

The State Trooper is funny, he said all the other states require some sort of registration, what, no they don’t, only you pinko commie bastard states require registration of ones firearms. I would not ever register any of my firearms that is just asking for them someday to be confiscated if the wrong people get into office in this country and we already have the wrong people in too many places, NY, NJ, MD, and CA. And I am sure there are others. My current home state is at risk but for now the current gov’t is following the state and federal constitution for the most part.

    • Martin M February 2, 2018, 9:43 am

      Incorrect.
CA for one (I’m sure there are others) require that all possessed firearms be registered with the CA DOJ if you are a resident of CA. I found that out when I got my CCW and couldn’t add the one pistol I had for over 20 years (bought it while I was in the military) to my CCW list of carried weapons. Since I had served for a period of time in NY, I did have a pistol (CCW) permit for NY with that pistol.
What’s BS is that weapons are registered with the FED when you initially purchase it. Why does every state need to spend millions of dollars to keep their own records, and why do citizens have to be burdened with registering, registering again, and reregistering the same weapon over and over just because they move to a new state?
Message to Government – Tax less, regulate less, address the real issues.

      • JusRdaProblem February 2, 2018, 7:27 pm

The same reason you have to renew your driver’s license. How does a card being expired not allow you to buy beer? Did your age change? It’s always about taking more money from the lower classes to keep them in their same classes. It’s why public schools teach dead beat parent’s kids to be workers and never business owners. Public schools won’t even teach you how to properly operate in your community; as an example, in a court of law. Slavery never ended it is just called economics.

    • Sepp W February 2, 2018, 10:49 am

There are 3 or 4 states and maybe same number of major metros that require registration, sally enough. Registration is control and control is power over the people. It easier to take law-abiding citizens’s firearms than to disarm criminals. Laws have zero affect on criminals, but far reaching and long-lasting effect on law-abiding citizens.

  • Frank Rizzo February 2, 2018, 7:26 am

This is NOT a requirement in most states.

  • MR PATRIOT February 2, 2018, 7:18 am

Typical Democrat doing everything possible to take away our 2nd amendment rights, These democrats Suck I will never vote of a democrat again. They do not care about this country or about Americans.
They are using black people to gain power and nothing else, Please tell me what great strides Obama made in helping blacks improve there lot. He keep them on the government plantation he feed , clothed, gave them money and cell phones and treated them just like there ancestors.
    KEEP VOTING DEMOCRATIC

  • Jay February 2, 2018, 7:13 am

Talk about about a communistic law! Lets make it a felony so that law abiding citizens will be made felons and no longer able to carry and many never own a firearm again! Stand up to the commies, 70000 people is quite an army! Why people continue to vote for these kinds of idiots is revolting in and of itself!

  • Jeffrey Denny February 2, 2018, 6:44 am

Misleading and erroneous title for this article! Such as those of us who love our Second Amendment Rights, we as Americans also have the right not to be adjudged guilty without first being tried and found guilty in a court of law! These so-called 70,000 New York State citizens are not “felons” but are purportedly in violation of a statute which has felony punishment provisions. Your title should have read something like “70,000 NYC Gun Owners Face Felony Charges!”

  • Sneed Hurn February 2, 2018, 6:30 am

One of the many reasons why I would never move back to NY. It has always been some what of a socialistic state but it is getting worse by the day. The idiot Governor now wants to give illegals free college. Not American citizens but illegals paid for by Americans. What a turd this guy is. Sorry NY I love the state but with it’s crazy laws and high taxes I just can’t come back.

  • Paul February 2, 2018, 6:17 am

I’d like to see our President intensify the efforts to permit universal carry; reciprocity. As for these Democrats, there appears to be a day coming that I believe is tantamount to a “show-down”. People (Patriots) in America are guaranteed the right to possess and carry firearms. No democrat is going to remove that right, at least not without very significant sequelae.

    • Ton E February 2, 2018, 7:05 am

Intensify efforts? That implies he’s made efforts outside of campaign promises.

    • CRAIG February 2, 2018, 8:38 am

I disagree with the federal reciprocity idea wholeheartedly. Think about it. We want the feds to regulate something that is a state issue. How has that worked out for anyone in the past? Its a bad idea to ask the feds to regulate any right, personal or state.

      • Stan d. Upnow February 2, 2018, 10:30 am

You obviously lack the understanding of that issue. It is precisely Because there are so many conflicting state carry laws that we need a national right to carry law. For example, I was planning a trip to MT from my state of FL. The route AAA mapped for me as the shortest took me briefly through IL. All the states along that route has reciprocity with FL, except IL. I would have to re-route my trip just to avoid traveling 60 miles across part of IL.

  • JohnB February 2, 2018, 5:59 am

Wi[[ 70000 NY residents now move out of the state? Perhaps all gun owners will/should move.

  • Altoid February 2, 2018, 5:39 am

Well, New Yorkers continue to vote in politicians who support this kind of thing. Those who didn’t vote for those politicians and who live in New York may want to find a new state to live in. Taxes are far too high there anyway.

Glad I live in a state with constitutional carry.

    • Pat February 2, 2018, 6:52 am

Not New York. New York City. The entire state is held hostage by that money sucking dumpster fire downstate.

      • Irv February 2, 2018, 11:39 am

        Amen

  • Dan February 2, 2018, 5:04 am

I’m Australian (and amazingly a gun owner) and I can tell you right now that registration is the road to confiscation.

You Aussies stupidly took the bait….. and the hook, line, & sinker. How’s that working out for ya?

  • Z February 2, 2018, 4:42 am

    Dear New York Staters
You got three options only :
    – change your laws
    – fire your lawmakers
    – run from there like hell
But choice is of course yours :^)

    • CRAIG February 2, 2018, 8:43 am

Just please STOP coming to Texas. Our politics are screwed up enough, but when folks move here and then get involved, the first thing they seem to say is “well, the way they did it where i am from…” if you like the way they did it where you are from, then go back.

      • alex February 2, 2018, 9:35 am

you have that right craig!! i live in PA. and they moved to pa to get away from the crime and taxes and brought their shitty politics and bad habits with them, let them stay in the communist hellhole of their own making!!

      • Stan d. Upnow February 2, 2018, 10:37 am

Same deal with our uninvited “guests” from south of the border. Caught one doing an oil change on his car(no DL, no insurance) in the parking lot. He was draining the oil directly on the ground!! When I confronted him, he said: “Dis is how we do eet in My country.” I told him he better not do that here, and to go back to where he came from. I shuddered at the thought of those cockroaches polluting the land in their countries, as well.

        • Michael December 7, 2018, 10:15 am

That’s funny. Years ago I was working for the Colorado Law Enforcement Training Academy. We were tasked with providing a yearly basic LEO Training Class for the smaller PDs on the West Slope. In order to provide housing for the LEOs that would be attending, we rented housing facilities that were used annually for migrant workers harvesting crops in the local area. We brought over prison trusties from the Colorado State Prison to clean up the housing facilities. The “hard working”migrant laborers from south of the border must not have ever used a toilet because they “took care of their business” inside the living areas, in the corners, next to the beds, just everywhere! The place was such a terrible mess that even the prisoners were repulsed by the conditin of the living areas. So much for the “image” the drive by media paints of the gracious, hard working lawful “undocumented” immigrants stealing across our borders every day. Fortunately most of these “guests” don’t stay near the border byt quickly migrant to the northeast! Adios amigos!!

      • Killerbs February 2, 2018, 11:45 am

Amen, brother. It’s getting to the point where I’m starting to think that we need to build a wall around Texas, or just secede.

  • Dr. Strangelove February 2, 2018, 4:30 am

I’m sure glad that they cleaned up all of the gangs and street crime so that they can go after the real criminals.

  • Dave February 2, 2018, 4:28 am

Check provision of safe act..I believe they can seize all firearms to include rifles and shotguns from someone who fails to re-certify their permit. Der fuerer wants to make it safe for criminals to attack NY citizens without fear of us being able to protect ourselves.

  • Gunflint February 2, 2018, 3:19 am

Anti Constitutional NAZIs…70,000 Felons? Fk thier commie Governor

  • Gunflint February 2, 2018, 3:16 am

Felons? It sounds like 70k American Patriots gave the middle finger to NY NAZI’s. Use the Constitution or lose it.

  • Robert Smith February 2, 2018, 12:37 am

Good for the 70,000 who didn’t register. One way to defeat this type of law is through massive non-compliance. They can’t put 70,000 people in jail.

    • Keith February 2, 2018, 7:41 am

Robert, that was my 1st thought, but human nature being what it is, I’ll bet that they make examples out of a fwe dozen and most of the rest will fold. Nothing like the threat of losing one’s freedom or home, or whatever, to bring them into compliance. Already part of The Gov’s plan. Maybe a couple convenient shootings, “See, this guy didn’t renew.” I maintain a 3 state buffer between me and any one of those socialist utopias.

Think again! Cuomo is just the sort(like Jerry Brown) to release dangerous criminals from prison to make room for citizens who didn’t renew their firearm permit. Watch, you’ll see.
