9mm AR Pistol – Angstadt Arms UDP-9–SHOT Show 2015

Angstadt Arms UDP-9

The UDP is a pistol caliber carbine designed around the familiarity of the AR-15. Reminiscent of the Colt 9mm SMG, the UDP has a few necessary changes which set it apart. The UDP is Chambered in 9mm and loads from standard GLOCK magazines. This simple change makes the UDP an easy transition for anyone currently running a 9mm GLOCK. Compact in size, the Angstadt Arms UDP – 9 comes in at 21 inches and weights under 5 lbs. With the added velocity from the longer 9mm barrel, the UDP should hit like a featherweight sledgehammer. Designed for use in close quarters, the UDP is an ideal option for Law enforcement or home defense.

The big questions about pistol stabilizing braces still remain, and are worth mentioning again. Utilizing a SB-15 arm brace would seem logical. Or take the pistol a step further and submit SBR paper work. The UDP easily gives guns like the SIG MPX, and POF-5 a run for their money and in a lot of ways beats them to the finish line.

With a Law Tactical folding stock adapter, the UDP-9 becomes a compact SBR.

With a Law Tactical folding stock adapter, the UDP-9 becomes a compact SBR.

Constructed from 7075 –T6 billet aluminum, the upper and lower fit together tight and have been worked over to remove weight and non-essential features. There is no forward assist or dust cover. They’ve resized the ejection port, incorporated a beveled magazine well, and added a proprietary magazine release.

All of these enhancements come together to produce a firearm that has a unique feel and function, but not so unique that it will create a learning curve. The UDP-9 simply does it better. Familiar features such as last round bolt hold open, bolt release, rotational safety, and charging handle are the same as they are on your ar15. Coming in at an MRSP of $1250, is a bargain in the world of high-end pistol caliber carbines.

Talks of a 16inch barreled version are also on the table. so head to the Angstadt Arms website Angstadt Arms UDP-9 and sign up for updates as there product line continues to grow.

Let me be the first to apologize then. In reference to the SIG brace I am in agreement that the reverse decision by ATF is a can of worms. In reference to my comments to Brian I apologize again. I was completely focused on the PISTOL aspect and I was NOT EDUCATED on the specifics of the letter.

With all of my ignorance out in the open let me say that I am very interested in this product. I have signed up for the updates. I like the folding stock option. I would like a little longer barrel than the 6 inch offered on the website. I believe this would be an economical plinker, defensive and offensive firearm in the 9mm caliber that they are offering. I would pay the tax stamps for SBR and supressor options for it.

    I like this gun!

  • brad February 5, 2015, 6:29 pm

does anyone know if it is blow-back, di, or piston driven?

    • Dave February 5, 2015, 7:25 pm

You are wasting your time. Nobody on this site or the clown who calls himself Administrator even knows what that means. All they can do is insult others with personal attacks. Move on to serious media outlets and leave this one to the Nimrods.

    • jason December 13, 2016, 4:25 pm

It is another blowback operated carbine.

  • BJ February 5, 2015, 1:10 pm

Those of you having hissy fits about semantics and lack of info might consider chilling out a taste.
Perfect punctuation has little to do with the firearm and we might want to save our animosity for
the leftist creeps that don’t want us to have this, or any other firearm.
Jake Speed’s comment about buying more water and bullets says it all. Prepare yourselves.

  • Evan February 5, 2015, 10:58 am

Another gun with no reason to exist that doesn’t do anything that others don’t do better. And the pistol caliber carbine is essentially obsolete anyway. Plus, no brass deflector or forward assist. Don’t think you’ll ever see this in my closet.

    • dk February 5, 2015, 11:13 am

I don’t agree. I can’t wait to get an MPX. The MPX is a locked breach design and is truly superior.

    • Mr Brett February 5, 2015, 1:28 pm

I disagree also. But I may be obsolete myself with 5 pistol cal carbines in my possession in 9mm, .40, .45ACP, and 2 .44 Mags. I am permitted to shoot (and train if you will) with 9mm and .45 ACP carbines at my indoor range any time day or night, but no rifle cals indoors. On my 9mm AR, the deflector and assist are basically extra weight, those things don’t show up very often on pistols do they? And this new gun takes Glock mags and has no buffer tube…

  • dk February 5, 2015, 9:57 am

Not a very good review. No mention of mechanism function. Is it blowback, gas operated, or short recoil? Also silly statement about comparing it to MP5 and MPX with no details. Ignorance or oversight?

    • Administrator February 5, 2015, 10:18 am

This is not a review it is a product announcement. Ignorance or oversight?

      • dk February 5, 2015, 11:10 am

The oversight is the mfr’s then. Either way, you were in a hurry to get it out there and should have included it as basic info even if you just cut and pasted their release. Some readers are more knowledgeable than others about these things and want to know. My guess is this is just one more blowback AR 9mm, which would have stopped me reading on the spot.

        *** This is not a review ***

you’re right – it’s an advertisement. how does handling a gun in a booth for a few minutes allow anyone to determine it’s an ‘ideal option for Law enforcement or home defense’?

        • Administrator February 5, 2015, 11:35 am

All of the SHOT Show reviews are basically a regurgitation of the company line on what the thing is and why it was made. And all of the products we cover have been requested for actual reviews. The format of the SHOT coverage itself, all of it from the show floor, would not suggest otherwise. Unfortunately we have a noise floor these days of the prozac infused, and they tend to get confused.

          • Dave Emery February 5, 2015, 6:15 pm

I like that person named “Administrator”. They seem to know what they are talking about. Keep the comments relative to the topic rather than make the thread a lesson in grammar, syntax, or stupidity. Thank you “Administrator” you seem to be all over the internet chat rooms.

          • davud February 5, 2015, 7:22 pm

*** All of the SHOT Show reviews are basically a regurgitation of the company line on what the thing is and why it was made.***

that’s fine for basic, indisputable facts like caliber, construction materials, finish and so on. but when someone touts a gun as ‘ideal’ without ever seeing it perform, they raise questions about their independence and credibility. if, as you say, a test is forthcoming, why rush to gush?

if you ‘regurgitate’ the company line, you add no value for your readers, no reason to read you instead of the company website.

          • Administrator February 5, 2015, 10:22 pm

It only ads no value for people whose heads are up their asses. Everyone else enjoys the news and awaits the reviews.

  • Jake Speed February 5, 2015, 7:27 am

Can this 9mm pistol be bought without a butt stock from the outset as a pistol, not an SBR? Other competitors are offering similar 9mm pistol this way.

    Nice photos

    Buy more water and bullets!

    • Mr Brett February 5, 2015, 1:40 pm

Check out the link in the article. The site consists of about 3 whole pages with just a little more detail, and they are saying they will be selling matched upper/lower receivers compatible with 9/40/357.

  • brian February 5, 2015, 5:02 am

Looks like your holding that pistol with two hands……..they’re meant to b held and shot with one hand you might have turned or re manufacturer ed that pistol you have there in both of your hands

    • Aaron February 5, 2015, 9:52 am

Where did you get that information? Where does it say that a pistol was meant to be fired by one hand? I guess you had better notify all the police, military and well, gosh the rest of the world that anytime the weak hand comes up to grip the pistol that they are in violation of “intent”. Educate yourself.

      • Lee Dingle February 5, 2015, 10:14 am

While Brian’s comment may have been sarcastic, the one hand definition for pistol comes from the ATF.

        18 U.S.C., § 921(A)(29) and 27 CFR § 478.11

The term “Pistol” means a weapon originally designed, made, and intended to fire a projectile (bullet) from one or more barrels when held in one hand, and having:
        – a chamber(s) as an integral part(s) of, or permanently aligned with, the bore(s);
-and a short stock designed to be gripped by one hand at an angle to and extending below the line of the bore(s).

Back on topic, this looks like a cool product, I like the folding stock option from the factory.

      • Joel February 5, 2015, 10:16 am

Actually that is exactly what the ruling states…. and that IS the point as to why it makes no sense. From the ATF website:

        18 U.S.C., § 921(A)(29) and 27 CFR § 478.11

The term “Pistol” means a weapon originally designed, made, and intended to fire a projectile (bullet) from one or more barrels when held in one hand, and having:

        •a chamber(s) as an integral part(s) of, or permanently aligned with, the bore(s);
•and a short stock designed to be gripped by one hand at an angle to and extending below the line of the bore(s).

How is that for some “education” 🙂

      • Chris February 5, 2015, 10:17 am

Aaron, that was a shot at the ATF reversing its position on the Sig brace, if you look at ATF regulations they clearly state that pistols are designed with the intent to be fire with only one hand.

    • Mike February 5, 2015, 10:02 am

Literacy issues aside, that is the most ridiculous statement I have ever seen.

    • Mark February 5, 2015, 10:29 am

Cool! I love my Q10 colt 9mm lower SBR build and I would love to have a glock lower with a matching upper. Are they going to sale just the upper and lowers stripped?

    • Turbo February 5, 2015, 5:34 pm

DUMB is all I can say ..All the concealed carry classes ( as well as MANY other classes) teach you to hold the pistol with 2 hands..
