This AR-15/Ax Combo Might be the Coolest First-Responder Tool Ever (And Yeah, It’ll Work for Zombies, Too)

AR-15 Authors Gun Reviews Industry News Jordan Michaels Misc. Rifles This Week

There are thousands of AR-15 accessories on the market, but none are cooler (or more absurd) than Tracey Copeland and Andrew BeGole’s “Firearm-Mounted Rescue Tool.”

Their patent, which they received earlier this month, describes multiple accessories first responders can affix in place of an AR-15’s buttstock and buffer tube. These accessories include a fireman’s ax, a crowbar end, and other tools designed to breach doors and windows.

“We both had friends that are special forces, friends that are SWAT, friends that are firefighters, and we were just thinking: What if we could put some kind of breaching tool, some sort of halligan tool, on the back of an AR,” Copeland told Guns.com. “That’s just kind of the idea behind it was to see if that’s even feasible.”

Copeland doesn’t mention the tool/gun’s zombie-fighting potential, but that’s obvious to anyone with eyes and a Walking Dead obsession.

It’s important to note that the tool Copeland and BeGole designed replaces both the buttstock and the buffer tube. This allows the buffer tube to be constructed from a heavier material than the standard, lightweight aluminum, which would have trouble withstanding the prying or hacking necessary to breach a door.

Axe-3

The patent notes that the tool and buffer may be constructed of “steel and other metals and metal alloys, and polymers,” depending on the type of tool and applications.

The aluminum upper receiver would likely have to be reinforced as well, so it’ll be interesting to see how Copeland and BeGole address that.

They do mention in the patent, however, that their concept does not have to be used exclusively on AR-15’s: “Although embodiments of the rescue tool discussed herein included a threaded end for mounting onto an AR-15 type pistol, alternative embodiments of the rescue tool may connect, attach to, mount to, or otherwise fasten to a portion of a firearm or other device by any known or heretofore unknown means.”

Axe-2

It’s a fascinating idea, and one that has developed beyond the realm of theory.

Copeland and BeGole have already manufactured at least one prototype, which you can see in the image below.

Smart to remove magazine before using it as an axe. Hopefully they will remember to remove the round in the chamber or the guy behind him won’t be able to chop his tree down.

  • Luap September 1, 2016, 4:56 am

I think this would work for rifle style pistols for a single reason…. It would not be considered an actual shoulder stock.

  • Michael Hull July 11, 2016, 12:18 pm

I’m working on an axe that looks like an AR15. It doesn’t shoot but it will actually chop down a tree.

  • loupgarous June 21, 2016, 11:30 pm

Back when the M-16 rolled out in Vietnam, too many troops saw that notched flash hider and thought “Wow, this is just the thing for breaking metal packing straps with!” and wound up breaking their rifle. Someone said “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
This whole “stick an axe head on the stock end of the rifle, so you can use the barrel for leverage” idea is proof of that.

    • Nunya Business June 22, 2016, 11:34 pm

Very well said. It just looks like a great way to break the buttstock threaded ring on the lower receiver. But, hey, I bet they get a patent on it…nevermind it’s useless as a combat tool. Gov’t will sign on off on it and, well, crap, GI’s will have it. Stop the World, I want to get off.

    • Robert Brooks June 27, 2016, 6:07 am

I’ve seen people break the butt-stock away from the lower receiver extension doing a manual of arms or setting it down too hard. The only thing I dislike about AR’s is that some parts are kind of fragile. They are good for doing one thing. Shooting. Butt-strokes not advised. Have seen many troops with only the sling holding the butt-stock on as it spins around and around…..

  • Robert June 20, 2016, 4:00 pm

The very idea that anyone would actually apply for a patent on anything as laughably stupid as this makes me fear for the future of humanity. I’d like to submit an early Darwin Award nomination for whoever decides to give the prototype a full function test.

  • BRASS June 20, 2016, 12:25 pm

Looks like a good way to make a useful firearm — useless as a firearm. In order to get any real level of leverage on the tool head, a lot of force will have to be applied to the receiver and even the barrel.
It seems to me that using an AR for an axe, pry bar or hammer will undoubtedly be harmful to the aluminum components and barrel if any real force is applied.
I could be wrong but experience and common sense tell me — except for specific uses with adequate training — don’t.

Oh I so badly wanted to comment on the hilarity of this. But EVERYONE beat me to it. The idea of hacking away at anything with my $1500 AR is ludicrous. If I hack at anything with any regularity I would probably have an axe. For a good laugh read the comments though, nice work people.

    W T F !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • pete June 20, 2016, 11:47 am

Please stop with the zombie jokes for f’s sake. It never was funny and so soon after Orlando its just poor taste for civilians to talking about needing or wanting a mass-shooting gun. Yep, these guns are fun in a perfect world, but not so much fun in our real world anymore.

    • Richard June 20, 2016, 12:46 pm

Two zombies walk into a bar…….. Now Shut the **** UP

    • Spyder June 20, 2016, 2:33 pm

Or you being serious? It’s called the 2nd Ammendment! Our GOD given right, NOT Government “Granted” right! I just don’t get how the MOST simply stated and not to mention the ONLY Ammendment that even states “Shall NOT be infringed ” can be SO hard to understand! On top of that is the only right we have to PAY and be Licensed to exorcise! Why do you NEED a Lexus?! Why do you NEED more than 24 hours of food on hand?! Why do you NEED Harly? Because I WANT it! And unlike many, I have actually FOUGHT for that RIGHT! So unless they actually WANT a Civil War, they need to keep their bloody, weasely, callous-free hands OFF our guns! No MATTER how “scary” looking it is! Because there are millions just like me that will NOT hand them over! They’re going to have to “Come and Take Them!”!!

    • Nunya Business June 22, 2016, 11:38 pm

Oh, and if those fags had been carrying FIREARMS instead of “personal lube” packets (and knew how to use the firearms) they wouldn’t be dead. Um, I call that a “FACT”.

  • FrontierTom June 20, 2016, 11:19 am

Wow! I seem to be getting the idea that you guys don’t care for this idea! LOL! I can just see it, the guy is in the rear, the are getting ready for the breach! He accidently touches the trigger, shots his self or someone else, and the axe flies up and cuts his arm off! They haven’t even started toward the building! EMT’s have work on him before anything even gets started! This thing would just snap off! Wow, what a concept huh?

  • Jay June 20, 2016, 10:58 am

I’m sure the aluminum upper buffer tube threads and the two pin holes holding the rifle together won’t get damaged at all, I bet the rifle stays accurate after all that barrel nut tightened to 80 foot pounds around those aluminum threads is surely on there tight enough and once the genius who swings this thing and disengages the hammer with one in the chamber well, there’s no way that he would shoot himself in the abdomen. I’d say this is a very calculated design by some liberal d-bag to make us look like idiots, bravo there guy.

    • Griggs June 20, 2016, 4:27 pm

Haha. I think you nailed it. By far one of the dumbest ideas I’ve seen. Although I’ve laughed quite a bit from this. So there has been some redeeming value in it.

  • Mahatma Muhjesbude June 20, 2016, 10:54 am

YaaaassssSir, I knew this was coming. I mean, if you’re not going to Declare ‘REAL’ war on the Islamic Terrorist State’ in Syria and Iraq and bomb them out of existence so there won’t be any more ISIS supporters because how can you support something that doesn’t exist anymore, then why not just help these Jihadists even further by making it easier to do the ‘Killing Field’ transition on civilians when Obama gets his AR ban into place soon?

So When someone not yet shot or killed jumps up and screams at the AR weilding IS soldier in the process of implementing a guerilla attack on American property, and shouts ‘HEY, DON’T YOU FUCKING KNOW THAT AR-15’S ARE BANNED, ASSHOLE?’
And the terrorist says, ‘Oh, Allah be praised, and peace be upon you for telling me that, I didn’t know, hold on for just one second…? ‘ Then, he turns his AR around butt first and staarts killing Infidels the old fashion Islamist way. By chopping their heads off?

    • Tim June 20, 2016, 10:54 am

This is right up there with snake oil ONLY much more dangerous! Can you imagine how many morons will shoot themselves using this thing?

  • Penn June 17, 2016, 4:17 pm

Great Idea Guys ! This will really show em’. It will show all of Americas enemies our well thought out ingenuity is not going to encourage anyone to come after us because we have the ARAXE THAT WILL KICK THEYRE ARSS.

Frankly the ar15 was already a great breach and entry weapon four well placed shots at locks and you can through just about any door . And if not just watch the back door fly open it really works!

  • kickinitforever June 17, 2016, 12:29 pm

It never fails to amaze me what these drugstore bozos think up in their comic book trained little brains. I thought the bayonet on a pistol was a good chuckle but this takes the cake. What serious warriors need is an espresso machine integrated into their assault bicycle

    Whatcha’ need is a chainsaw!

  • Steve June 17, 2016, 8:31 am

C’mon! Nobody NEEDS an AR-15 axe! Think of the Childrens!!!

  • Robin Grimm June 17, 2016, 7:23 am

Not on that AR plastic stock. It’s a piece of junk. But put it on a wooden stock AK and you may have something!

    • mb June 17, 2016, 7:33 am

You would have something, a broken stock or a hole in your thigh….

  • MB June 17, 2016, 7:11 am

Some idiot LEO will think this is a great idea, until he shoot a hole in his foot or kills someone behind him while swinging it at a door. Guns are tools, but only when used as designed. This is a UID/ND and a funeral waiting to happen. Also I can guess the buffer tube threaded connector in the lower will survive exactly one door breach. This is the crap that gives gun owners a bad reputation as yahoos.

  • JCB June 17, 2016, 7:05 am

This is a joke right? The buffer tube threads will never take the stress of prying or twisting.

    • Scotty Gunn June 18, 2016, 9:41 pm

Exactly. The rear of the receiver would break where the buffer tube screws into.

  • George June 17, 2016, 6:26 am

Lol, I sincerely hope this is just for laughs. When I first saw it I could picture buffer tubes snapping off, large open wounds to shoulders, etc..(Ahhhh, it’s just a flesh wound)..lol. Thanks for the morning chuckle!

  • Edward June 17, 2016, 5:52 am

What are they thinking?? You are going to be holding on to the barrel end of a loaded gun and axing something. Sure the safety is going to work. This is a death wish waiting to happen.

  • REM1875 June 17, 2016, 3:37 am

Just what I need, an AR barrel the drops rounds into the dirt at my feet or shoots around corners after I tweak the barrel using it as a pry tool

  • Will Drider June 15, 2016, 12:54 am

What CRAP!!! There areso many things wrong with this cluster of opposing dynamics that I’m not even going to waste more time on it.
