“What a radical idea. A great gift that our Founders gave to us: The freedom to chase our individual dreams through our sweat and toil and imagination, and the imperative to strive together, as well, to achieve a common good, a greater good.”
— President Obama, Farewell Address, Chicago, Illinois, Jan. 10, 2017
Barry is on his way out. My question is, how will you remember the 44th president of the United States? What sticks out in your mind when you reflect back on his eight years in the oval office?
Well, I made a list of five things that came immediately to my mind. Here they are:
Best Gun Salesman of All Time!
Love him or hate him, Barack was the greatest gun salesman in U.S. History. To give you an idea of what I’m talking about, the total economic impact of the firearms and ammunition industry ballooned from $19.1 billion in 2008 to $49.3 billion in 2015 — that’s a 158 percent increase! — according to a report released last Spring by the National Shooting Sports Foundation.
Additionally, the total number of full-time jobs in the industry grew 73 percent, from approximately 166,000 to 288,000 over that same period of time.
The ironic thing, of course, is that this unprecedented growth in our industry didn’t happen because of Obama’s agenda, but in spite of it. Through executive fiat and supporting bills that would outlaw many commonly owned and widely popular firearms and accessories, the gun-grabber-in-chief fought tooth and nail to roll back the 2A rights of law-abiding Americans. But the harder he fought, the more we bought.
His plan to disarm America backfired. The joke was on him.
Buy Now, Pay Later
Before Obama took office, our national debt was a huge problem. Now it’s in crisis mode as Barry has nearly doubled it in eight years.
Using the gross debt figure, the debt has climbed from $10.6 trillion since Inauguration Day in 2009 to $19.4 trillion as of July 21. When examining the debt held by the public, which omits money the government owes itself and is a more insightful figure, the debt has jumped from $6.3 trillion to $14 trillion, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. That’s more than double!!!
What does this mean exactly? It means we’re royally screwing over our posterity. We’re mortgaging their future by writing bad check after back check.
So, yeah, instead of preparing your children for college, it might be a good idea to buy them a nice pair of boots, a headlamp, and pickax. Why? Because there’s a good chance they’ll be shipped off to work at a Chinese or Japanese labor camp.
Killing bin Laden
If there is a highlight to Obama’s presidency, then it is Operation Neptune Spear, the successful SEAL Team Six raid to kill bin Laden.
While the vast majority of the credit should go to the operators who carried out the mission, one can argue that Obama deserves a modicum of credit for having the temerity to green-light the raid over opting to smart bomb the bin Laden compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, which was evidently on the table as an option.
Yes, Obama was smart enough to recognize that the American people wanted verifiable proof that the alleged terrorist mastermind behind 9/11 was brought to justice. Blowing bin Laden to bits wouldn’t have achieved that end and there would always be a question of whether we actually got him. So, Obama sent in the SEALs and they executed the kill and/or capture mission.
It should be noted that as it relates to global security and foreign policy, this is one highlight amid many, many lowlights, from $400 million ransom payments to Iran, to the humanitarian crisis in Syria, to the destabilization of Iraq, to the rise of that “JV” squad known as ISIS — all of which is, at least in part, attributable to Obama’s failure as the leader of the free world.
If anything, Obama’s taught us that apology tours and leading from behind do not make the world a better place. As for the decision to raid the bin Laden compound, even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then.
Obamacare. Ugh. What a disaster! But many on the left will argue it is his signature achievement. All I can say to them is remember this:
“If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor. Period. If you like your healthcare plan, you will be able to keep your healthcare plan. Period,” said president Obama.
What a crock of… Yeah. I think for the many that fell off the hope and change bandwagon this was the straw that broke the camel’s back. It wasn’t just a little white lie, it was purposeful deception on a grand scale to push through one of the largest, most misguided pieces of legislation in American history.
Upwards of 2.6 million people got notifications that their plan would no longer be offered following the rollout of Obamacare. Overall, costs went up and the quality of care went down. I don’t think that was the “change” people were voting for.
How is Obamacare doing today? Not good. Premiums for the benchmark silver plan are set to skyrocket by an average of 22% heading into 2017, according to the Department of Health & Human Services.
Fast & Furious
No, not talking about the Paul Walker movie franchise but about the gun-running scandal known as Operation Fast & Furious in which ATF agents allowed known straw purchasers to buy firearms from gun shop dealers near the Southern border and sell them directly to Mexican drug cartels.
Over the course of the operation more than 2,000 firearms “went missing” and one of those guns was recovered at the crime scene of slain U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry.
It was a huge scandal that reached the highest levels of the ATF and the DOJ, including the office of former Attorney General Eric Holder. In fact, it’s what led to the demise of Holder, who was the first A.G. to be held in criminal contempt by the U.S. House of Representatives for his refusal to cooperate with congressional investigators concerning the fatally-flawed operation.
Holder was ultimately bailed out by Obama, who used his executive privilege power to block the congressional subpoenas summoning the attorney general. Talk about cronyism and a disrespect for the rule of law!
Still, today, we don’t have a clear picture of how involved the Obama administration was in the operation. Who knew what, when? More importantly, why was it allowed to go on long after its deadly consequences were apparent?
We’ll probably never have the answers.
In bidding farewell to this smug, anti-gun, self-congratulatory elitist, all I want to say is, Hey, Mr. Obama, don’t let the door hit ya, where the good lord split ya!
