New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo called for a shutdown of the federal government until “real gun control” passes Saturday, while eulogizing a state attorney who was fatally shot by a stray bullet in Brooklyn this month.
The victim, 43-year-old Carey Gabay, was shot in the head while attending an early morning celebration on Sept. 7 preceding the annual West Indian Day parade. Police do not believe that the shooting was intentional.
“His death was one of the most tragic, pointless examples of the rampant violence that is spreading like a cancer through our society, especially in our poorer communities and especially in our communities of color,” Cuomo said to the crowd gathered at Emmanuel Baptist Church.
Gabay, a graduate of Harvard law school, worked as the first deputy counsel at Empire State Development, the state’s chief economic development agency. So far, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
“It’s not enough for New York State to pass a gun law and close the front door when the guns are coming in the back door, when the guns can come up from Virginia or South Carolina for anyone willing to take a car ride,” Cuomo continued.
While no one has been arrested for the shooting, police did release a sketch of a suspect who is wanted for questioning. According to authorities the suspect is a “19- to 20-year-old black man wearing a white T-shirt, black pants and a Jamaican flag around his neck.”
“If the far right is willing to shut down the government because they don’t get a tax cut for the rich,” said Cuomo, the architect of the flawed NY SAFE Act, “then our people should have the same resolve and threaten to shut down the government if they don’t get a real gun control law to stop killing of their innocents.”
There never seems to be a shortage of liberals with armed guards crying about We the people’s 2nd Amendment Rights?
The more gun control they put in place to quote-unquote make us safe the worst things get. And if they pull up the government shutdown and every single one of them need to have their pay shut down at the same time you’re not doing anything to earn their money now anyways.

Elected officials have a sacred and sworn duty to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution. Straight forward and simple policy is to impeach any elected official who wishes to modify or detract from their sworn duty. This would include State, Federal and Local officials that promote any betrayal or Treasonous acts toward our “Etched in Stone” Constitution. The people of this Country must decide what they want! The People should take time to read the Constitution, Bill of Rights and furthermore, accurate books of our history. The “slow boil” has simmered for many years and is now at the boiling point and soon it will be too late to bail out of the pot. Our Politicians enact laws where we generational American Citizens must compromise our Religion, values and believes for those who wish to take and destroy all. You know I’m constantly amazed at all of those in politics, the media, etc. who think some law will prevent something. Laws don’t PREVENT anything. They outline what is not permisable and what the penalty for violation will be. We have laws against, Murder, Robbery, Rape, Assault, etc. Yet we still have murders, robberies, rapes, assaults, etc. Criminals don’t obey laws, that’s why they are called criminals. The only thing that happens is normal law abiding citizens obey whatever the law happens to be and the criminals don’t. Wake up!!!

Cuomo, like many politicians idea of “real” gun control often violates the 2nd Amendment. Cuomo’s comparison with a Republican filibuster over tax cuts is ludicrous. Until politicians realize the “broad stroke” approach is in and of itself Unconstitutional. Judges routinely negotiate pleas in shooting and gunpoint robbery cases that have loopholes to avoid mandatory sentences. I support strong sentencing for crimes committed with a gun as far as making any straw purchaser involved a equal co-conspirator and receive the equal sentence of the actual gunman. The media has a responsibility to inform the public that punishing law abiding citizens for crimes committed by others is also illegal. The media just fans the flames of divisiveness in a country that hasn’t been this far apart since the civil war.

Legislation does NOT affect a criminal, law enforcement and judicial prudence DOES affect criminals.

Just how is UBC supposed to stop the black market trade in handguns? Then there is Cuomo’s unstated but implicit premise that the SAFE Act has successfully stopped felons or other prohibited persons from acquiring handguns, and that therefore the gun MUST have come from out of state–even though neither the gunman nor the gun have been found.
