A Detroit homeowner and father of four children fatally shot an alleged intruder on Monday after he saw the suspect strangling his dog in the backyard.

A neighbor, who acted as a translator for the homeowner during his interview with police, explained the situation to MyFoxDetroit.

“He woke up to use the bathroom and he heard some rattling in the back,” said Hilal Alkateeb. “When he looked out back he saw the guy trying to choke out the dog when the guy made eye contact with him he approached the window when he approached the window he shot him.”

The intruder was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alkateeb said the homeowner, a “real nice guy,” did what he had to do to protect his family.

“He broke into their property,” Alkatteeb said. “Anyone in their right mind would defend their house their property, their family, their kids.”

Authorities are still investigating the shooting to determine if the use of deadly force was justified. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Detroit Police Department had a message for the public.

“There is a push to protect property,” said Deputy Chief Renee Hall. “However in order to protect property and use deadly force there has to be an imminent threat to the safety of a life whether yours, a family member or someone else.”

WE NEED SOME COMMENTS ON “SHOOT TO KILL” I HEARD FROM A VERY GOOD SOURCE THAT YOU SHOULD NEVER SAY “I SHOT TO KILL” INSTEAD SAY “I SHOT TO STOP THE THREAT.”

Most of the lawyers I’ve seen quoted on the subject have said your best bet is to not to say anything at all. The little card I carry in my wallet suggests you say “I want my lawyer present before I answer any questions, and until then, I invoke my right to remain silent”. Then, based on the circumstances, your lawyer will help you decide what to say at the appropriate time. That advice might include saying something about “stopping the threat” later on down the road in court but don’t get ahead of yourself. The initial 911 call is also important and you want to be careful there as well. Remember, the recording might start before the operator even picks up the line….

First of all I would call out and shout (stop ) . If the intruder would continue I would shoot in the air. If the person would run to me with no weapon , I would shoot him on the legs ,then call the police. If this person (intruder) had a weapon other than a gun I would shoot his legs. But if he had a gun and pointed it at me or my family ? I would have to shoot to kill. Not other choice in the matter.

Wow u must have incredible aim to shoot someone in the leg during such a stressful time I’ll bet your the type of person that says you’d shoot the gun out of they’re hands as well lol i agree he should not have killed the person without knowing without a doubt that he was going to do great harm

    • Nate October 9, 2014, 2:51 pm

Shoot in the air you will get arrested for reckless endangerment/negligent discharge. He will also come back later with a gun and kill you
Shoot in the leg and you will get sued in civil court for millions after he got lost and was attacked by your dog then shot in the leg while defending himself.

If you pull a gun you do it to put someone in the ground.

Have you ever taken a ccw class eveey instructor will ell you you never fire a shot in the air what if u did that and killed a person down the block. Instructors don’t tell you to kill the person but they tell you if you feel threatened that your life was in danger you remove the threat essentially means you kill the person. you just don’t say it like that you have to be politically correct these days. I felt like my life was threatened and I removed the threat that’s all you got to say.

I hope you have learned something since posting this idiotic comment… Let me explain… If you shoot to maim you’ll be held civilly and criminally liable because if you were able to take the time to shoot the person in the legs, your life must not have been in danger…

Additionally, there are major blood vessels in the legs and you have a much higher chance of striking one if you aim for the legs meaning the person will most likely bleed out and die… There is a huge different between using lethal force to protect yourself, your family and those around you in order to stop the threat ( good ) versus shooting to kill ( bad ) versus shooting to maim and causing the likelihood of death to increase exponentially ( bad )…

Albert your a nut case you need help what goes up comes down and all that other goof ball

    • zenmonger June 16, 2017, 3:00 pm

WRONG. LOTS of other choice in the matter, all not nearly as foolish as yours. You are NOT a responsible gun owner.

  • Lonnie October 7, 2014, 9:53 am

We all know that if he had shot in the air.the man would have ran………so now what he’s a hero,or a killer .I chose ,now you!

    • SmokeHillFarm October 8, 2014, 2:27 am

My aim is not to scare him off, or risk him drawing a knife or gun and killing my dog, child or whatever, My aim is to drop him in his tracks to immediately stop the threat.

I’d have doe the exact same thing, and enjoyed the opportunity to serve my community.

    • Jim December 4, 2015, 2:25 pm

Willie – How do you know he would have ran?
He also might have pulled out his own gun and shot at the home owner.
Or any of a number of other things . . .

      • Mas January 27, 2017, 10:10 am

        That is very true, Willie.

  • Willie October 7, 2014, 12:50 am

It’s about time people back home (Detroit) started defending themselves and their property.

  • Russ October 6, 2014, 6:14 pm

    WTG Hilal, Welcome to America.
Home of the brave, land of the free.
That crazy ass was killing your family member and beaching your outside layer of defense.
I see Hilal’s dog in the same way police see their dogs as officers.
Thanks Hilal, that’s one less asshole wearing down earth and taking up clean air.

    • Russ October 6, 2014, 10:07 pm

      typo, sorry,…Breaching

    • Dark Zen June 15, 2015, 12:53 pm

Uh, Hilal was the “interpreter” not the shooter. Unfortunately, the law does not agree with you about family pets. They’re considered property and you cannot use lethal force in their defense. How you and the shooter see it is only relevant if you happen to be the prosecutor. Maybe the intruder was an A-hole as you describe, or maybe he was the dog’s original owner who loved him very much, found him in someone else’s back yard, and was giving him a hug before knocking on the door and asking the shooter if he could buy him back. Unlikely, but the point is that if you make assumptions and use lethal force you are going to jail for a long time if those assumptions do turn out to be wrong.

  • HDNKR October 6, 2014, 8:17 am

Why in the heck did he need an interpreter if you live in this country you should learn the language

    • MarkOwen October 6, 2014, 9:04 am

How did he get a firearm legally if he is not a resident who can speak english

      • mingpooh October 6, 2014, 11:11 am

You don’t need to speak any specific language to be a resident alien in the US, and any legal alien can leaglly own a firearm if they can pass the background check and meet any other requirements. i can tell you that if he used a nhandgun in Michigan, and he had it legally, he passed a whole bunch ot background tests. They are pretty tough on handguns in Michigan (I grew up there. Speaking English certainly does NOT have any bearing on one’s civil or moral character. Most of the criminals in this country speak English as their first language — perhaps speaking English should count against you, then???

        • Josh July 3, 2017, 2:21 pm

Thank God someone said it… nice comment ming.
gunsamerica is so full of backwards bible thumping hicks its disgusting sometimes. You don’t have to speak any language to live here. America was founded by immigrants FOR immigrants you dipsh*t. Markowen its idiots like you that make gunowners look like dumb@sses. Grow up.

    • Mas January 27, 2017, 10:15 am

When your first ancestors arriving in this country they likely did not speak English either, did they? Their language at the time could have been Slavic, Russian, Italian, French, African, Asian…etc…and that did not prevent them and their offsprings to become good American citizens, did it?
