How Far Will a 9mm Kill?

Authors S.H. Blannelberry

From IraqVeteran8888: “In this second part of our “How Far Will a 9mm Kill?” series we test the expansion characteristics of Federal HST 124gr ammunition at long range. We want to make it clear that, per the manufacturer, this ammunition is not designed to expand at extended ranges. We test the ammunition at 7 yards as a control, then proceed to dial in the artillery (KelTec Sub 2000) and drop some rounds in at 440 yards (400 meters). The results may surprise you…”

thank you for this information. i have a marlin camp 9, which is a comparable weapon to the kel-tek you used. i feel a lot better about using my campy, i will get some of that ammo in the future

I was surprised to see expansion at this distance. One would think that the velocity would drop off such as to not have enough energy to expand. How ever the expansion itself is not the greatest indicator of stopping power. It is the Temporary Stretch Cavity (TSC) that develops from the expansion, the hydrodynamic shock which can damage organs and arteries etc never actually touched by the bullet that can thus cause the amplified stopping power.

Having said all that this 9mm round I am confident would drop an enemy (take him out of action) at a distance greater than most would imagine. Good shooting too!

How much energy the bullet has for expansion is due to the Velocity and not distance. You changed the Velocity by changing the barrel lenght.
