Feinstein Announces Assault Weapons Ban of 2017

Guess who’s back? It’s your favorite senator from California! Lady Dianne Feinstein! And boy does she have some more goodies in store for you!

For the umpteenth time, Sen. Feinstein has introduced sweeping gun control legislation that takes specific aim at commonly owned and widely popular firearms and accessories.

Dubbed the “Assault Weapons Ban of 2017,” the bill seeks to ban black rifles, magazines that hold over 10 rounds, and bump stocks, among other provisions. You can see the bullet points below.

“We’re introducing an updated Assault Weapons Ban for one reason: so that after every mass shooting with a military-style assault weapon, the American people will know that a tool to reduce these massacres is sitting in the Senate, ready for debate and a vote,” said Feinstein Wednesday in a press release.

The move comes on the heels of a mass killing in Sutherland Springs, TX, that left 26 dead. Not addressed in Feinstein’s statement is the fact that the perpetrator of the shooting was stopped by local resident Stephen Willeford, who was armed with — get this — his own AR-pattern rifle.

In a Monday interview on CRTV’s “Louder With Crowder,” Willeford spoke candidly about the confrontation that indubitably saved lives.

“If I had run out of the house with a pistol and faced a bulletproof vest and kevlar and helmets, it might have been futile,” Willeford said. “I ran out with an AR-15 and that’s what he was shooting the place up with.”

“I hate to politicize that, but that’s reality,” he added.

Feinstein’s bill is a publicity stunt, not a meaningful way to stop mass killers. The California Democrat wants to be seen as gun control’s white knight for the moonbats who are dumb enough to believe that making it harder for citizens to defend themselves will somehow make the country a safer place.

Below are the bullet points of this sad attempt to grab headlines.

Key provisions

  • Bans the sale, manufacture, transfer and importation of 205 military-style assault weapons by name. Owners may keep existing weapons.
  • Bans any assault weapon that accepts a detachable ammunition magazine and has one or more military characteristics including a pistol grip, a forward grip, a barrel shroud, a threaded barrel or a folding or telescoping stock. Owners may keep existing weapons.
  • Bans magazines and other ammunition feeding devices that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition, which allow shooters to quickly fire many rounds without needing to reload. Owners may keep existing magazines.

Exemptions to bill

  • The bill exempts by name more than 2,200 guns for hunting, household defense or recreational purposes.
  • The bill includes a grandfather clause that exempts all weapons lawfully possessed at the date of enactment.

Other provisions:

  • Requires a background check on any future sale, trade or gifting of an assault weapon covered by the bill.
  • Requires that grandfathered assault weapons are stored using a secure gun storage or safety device like a trigger lock.
  • Prohibits the transfer of high-capacity ammunition magazines.
  • Bans bump-fire stocks and other devices that allow semi-automatic weapons to fire at fully automatic rates.

The bill is also supported by the following Senators: Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Jack Reed (D-R.I.), Tom Carper (D-Del.), Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Al Franken (D-Minn.), Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) and Bob Casey (D-Pa.).

“To those who say now isn’t the time, they’re right—we should have extended the original ban 13 years ago, before hundreds more Americans were murdered with these weapons of war,” said Feinstein. “To my colleagues in Congress, I say do your job.”

    If the laws on the books had been followed the TX church shooter would not have been able to buy the guns he used from an FFL. We still don’t know what the Vegas shooter used. I don’t believe for a minute all the gunfire came from a bumpstock weapon. The first string of fire was to regular and slow to have been a bumpfire stock. I believe he used illegal converted full auto weapons. Again a useless law that only affects the law abiding. Then of course murder has been forbidden since Cain and Abel. So much for laws.
    Di-Fi needs to go. She is a miserable old dried up witch that hasn’t had a good idea since the first day she infected government.

    Once again the Barrack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Dianne Feinstein solution is to enact ineffective legislation, to create criminals out of responsible American citizens. Attempting to throw a legislative blanket over a problem and smother constitutional rights. This is exactly why I no longer want to listen to their voices in relation to the problem.
    If you have cancer you have it surgically removed. A much better solution!
    Stephen Willeford both bravely and heroically gave action too such problem. Granted, we all should wish he had known and was able to arrive much sooner, for the sake of the congregation.
    A responsible legislative approach would be to harden the soft targets and stop lying to the American people as you certainly have an underlying agenda.
    People, take a look at how the greatest nation on earth is becoming socialistic and communistic in nature by selecting individuals to political position that do not whole heartedly, patriotically, support your constitutional rights.
    We must seek out individuals that are honorable, intelligent, responsible and patriotic to hold political position.

    I loooooooved the look on the face of the cnn anchor who was interviewing the kid who drove the truck when he asked him to what type of weapon Willeford was using. He said in a proud sort of voice it was an at 15 and the anchors eyes got as big as saucers. Almost like he was thinking “but….but…..” lol he literally was like “oh it was an ar too?!?” He quickly went into the the next topic. As horrible as the situation was I would love to have seen that pansies face when a armed citizen was able to combat him toe to toe. And these snowflakes don’t train like our law abiding gun owners do. I’ve said numerous times that I don’t “need” and ak, I just enjoy it. Willeford showed me first hand how wrong I was.     The TX Church shooter already knew he was ineligible to obtain, own, or possess a firearm based on his CM conviction and he lied on ATF Form 4473 if he purchased the firearms from a FFL dealer as alleged in news reports.
    It’s well documented the criminal prosecution and sentencing and mental health reporting to NICS by Federal, state, and localities is broke, and likely NICS is as well. Plenty to fix first instead of creating more useless, unenforced laws.
    Liberals hate the Constitution, they abhor individual rights, and think rights should be granted, or manufactured, for certain groups and individual rights should not exist. Liberals use misinformation, made-up facts, and faux statistics to appeal to emotions of the uninformed, incapable, and unproductive.

    For example in a WaPo article, FBI database for gun buyers missing millions of records, it generally covers the issue, but as you read through it, the WaPo can’t resist to politicize the issue by stating, “Moreover, many convicted domestic abusers who buy guns do so not through a gun store, as Kelley did, but online or from gun shows, advocates say. In the case of such private sales, sellers are not obligated to run buyers’ names through the federal database.” They didn’t bother to mention that FFL dealers at a gun show are required by federal law to conduct a background check when they sell a firearm. Likewise, the state where a gun show is held would bind private sellers to not only federal law, but that state’s law involving the transfer of a firearm to a citizen of the state or someone out of state..
    I imagine there are firearms being sold that skirt the law, but every legitimate gun dealer or private seller that has an online presence requires transfer through an FFL with few exceptions (e.g. black powder).
    More “common sense gun control” has zero affect on criminals, but a huge effect on law-abiding citizens.

    When this Senator gets rid of her security detail who have guns and walks around like an ordinary citizen, then she might have some credibility. Gun control is not the problem. The problem in Texas was that the USAF did not handle the paperwork properly and it allowed this mentally unstable person the ability to to buy a gun. Even if they did what they were supposed to do this person would have still been able to get what he needed on the black market or somewhere else. Maybe mental health is a more appropriate issue to tackle. It seems that most, if not all of these terrible events, involves people with some sort of mental instability.

    If your rifle has a pistol grip, it will be banned. If it has a forward-grip, it will be banned. If it has an adjustable stock, it will be banned. How stupid. Now, I am all for banning bump stocks, as I feel there is no plausible reason to own/need one. But, that is the only legislation I would support regarding firearms. Yes, I live in Las Vegas.

    Not-so-Fine-stein will only cause another run on assault-style, semi-auto rifles, which is fine with me. The more that are LEGALLY owned, the better.

    Drove by Sportsman’s Warehouse this a.m., 15 minutes before they opened. There was a line at 40-people deep, waiting to get in to buy the advertised AR’s, and pistols. I LOVE IT!!!!

    In the last 25 years the US has suffered between 35 and 45,000 motor vehicle fatalities annually; that’s a total of 1,097,889 deaths. The first nine months of 2016 there were over 52,000 drug overdose fatalities in the US. One does not see a single headline anywhere about restricted access to vehicles for good drivers, not one syllable about banning or restricting those who use pharmaceuticals lawfully and wisely; but every time there is a shooting progressives and politicians want to pass new laws restricting access to and ownership of guns by law abiding citizens. Such illogical thinking is political, used to mask the unspoken truth that guns in the hands of the law-abiding pose more of a threat to government than governed citizens. When the government protects the people, there is democracy; when government protects itself, democracy is doomed.

      It’s interesting that gun ownership, which is a constitutional right, is constantly threatened. Yet, obtaining, and keeping, a driver’s license, which is not a right, but a privilege, is so protected. If I own a gun, and break any law associated with that gun, I will lose that gun, immediately. But, if I drive drunk twice, or cause multiple accidents, I will continue to possess both my license and my car, as long as I have insurance. How does that make any sense at all????

    Ok, so Feinstein wants to ban assault rifles, but will allow those who own them to keep them. Just like the morons in Connecticut who passed a similar ban in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook school massacre, but allowed residents who legally owned assault rifles to keep them too. So, what if some day one of these gun owners goes off the rails for whatever reason, and goes out and shoots a bunch of people with the rifle that they were allowed to keep? So what did this ban prevent? Nothing!! If you are going to propose a gun ban, then it has to be a total ban. Nobody keeps them, everybody turn them in. We all know that even if that were the case, will it stop mass shootings? Hell no. There will still be plenty of other guns for the shooters to pick from. Then of course Feinstein will want to introduce another bill addressing those weapons since her assault rifle ban, assuming it becomes law, “didn’t go far enough”.

      And if you say complete the ban, then you need to remove it from the military, every department of the government and all police as well. Heck there are over 300 million guns in the US. You could maybe ask the military do it and if all members of the army and marines go and collect guns, and if half of them are just turned in by citizens happy to remove them from their life, everyone only has to go collect 100 or so guns or so. Heck, offer every one of those people retirement when they get their 100th gun. What is right for the group should be right for the individual. Alteratively, if it isn’t right for the individual, how can it be right for the group?

    She has a carry permit from California and I wonder if she is carrying while she is in DC. Since DC does not honor any other states permits so when she goes through a metal detector and it goes off she should be locked up like the rest of us would be.     The real problem in this country is an epidemic of obesity. We need a waiting period and weight check before you can by a high capacity spoon or fork. Spoons need to be limited to .6 ounces and forks do not need more than two tines. If you have to refill your spoons and forks more often you won’t eat so much. While we are at it lets end highway fatalities by limiting all vehicles to a max speed of 20 mph and a 40 hp engine. No one needs a 400 hp car that can go 150 mph. If we are going to blame objcts for peoples actions let’s take it all the way

      My 300 HP car can go 154 before the governor kicks in! How do I know…well because that sign on the road that said speed limit just plain 65 didn’t work. My car just seemed to want to do what I wanted it to do! So maybe I was the culprit and not the car…or did my car take control of my mind?     Our Constitution starts and reiterates many times throughout it’s amendments! “We The People” and “The People”
    The Ninth states, “The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.” Showing that it does not contain and cannot contain, all of human rights but these in the constitution are not to be touched by government regulation!
    The second amendment is the most infringed upon human right already and this needs to be corrected not more restricted, especially considering the time and events we live with today!
    Only those without rational, intelligent and productive thinking abilities, blames the tool instead of the person using it!

    First, how does this woman keep getting elected. Do none of you who live in CA get out and vote? Second, the “assault rifle” ban enacted years ago had no effect on gun crime, why are we going to do it again. Third, I have to agree with a commenter above, try to learn what an assault rifle is before you classify every black gun as one. How about we as gun enthusiasts educate everyone that the AR designation is not an acronym for assault rife, it’s Armalite Rifle. Fourth, Obama has absolutely no room to talk while his home town is the gun crime capitol of the country. Lastly, why don’t we address the things that really represent a danger to the American public: namely alcohol, tobacco and drugs. Here in AZ we lose 2-3 people a DAY to opioid overdoses, hundreds die yearly from tobacco related illnesses and hundreds die from alcohol related diseases and auto crashes. Where is the outrage for those killers?

    i find it interesting that Senator Diane Feinstein is telling the senate to “do their job” when they refuse to do that on healthcare reform and the tax bill. There would still be slaves if Harriet Tubman was not endowed with the 2nd amendment rights she exercised over a century ago. The Model 92 Winchester was the AR 15 of its age. it shot a lot of people and hunted a lot of groceries, and its mere presence deterred a lot of criminals in the success of their endeavors. Nothing has changed since then.
    The heart of man, and the state of natural and produced mental illness in out society, are what pull triggers. guns don’t go off by themselves. Perhaps she should ask congress to ban or restrict kitchen knives and delivery trucks too.

    Almost every gun owner knows ( except Mr. “Blue Dog” above ) that gun crime in general was on the decline prior to the “Assault Weapons Ban” and after it expired, continues to decline, and why? We there are almost 100 Million MORE GUNS now than before the ban. Banning types of guns or magazines has no effect on criminals. Was has an effect is the threat of an armed response from potential “victims” If you take the major crime cities and states stats ( where extreme gun control is the law, which iare traditional Democrat run areas ) out of the mix, the rest of the country’s gun crime stats are almost the same a Australia’s where gun control is extremely tight.. And also if you also notice, places like Australia, England, Brazil, etc where guns are rare and gun control strong, violent crime is on the rise far more than in the non-gun control areas of America.
    Gun control is a abject failure. An armed society is a polite society. Resist gun control/confiscation by all means necessary, or these pansy ass liberals will cost us the Republic, and once it’s gone, it’s gone forever.

Our senator Flake delivered the best endorsement of term limits by admitting he could not devote his time to doing his job representing his electorate because he was so tied up fund raising and campaigning for re-election. Low voter turnout is rampant here, folks it’s time to get off your butts and educate yourself about the candidates and vote. The morons in CA cast 300,000 votes for an anti-gun representative whose name would have been removed from the ballot if they had already not been printed for his involvement in gun running.

    Being a gun owner and gun lover myself, I must agree with nearly a quarter of the Senate on most common-sense gun safety points here. I for one would feel safer with these high-capacity magazines put out of easy reach of the next mass shooter. I have stated before that while I would like to see bump stocks regulated under the NFA (and pistol braces, too) and while Congress is not the entity to do that, what Senator Feinstein has offered in this bill seems like it would be fully within Congressional jurisdiction. However, the one-feature test seems a little too strict. The 1993 Assault Weapons ban had a two-feature test and I think that was sufficient. Really, the 1993 Assault Weapons Ban was pretty good across the board and a great success and could be easily reinstated with just a few updates for points like the bump stock. There are many, many firearms approved and specifically exempt from these restrictions, more than enough for all of us gun-loving folk to continue our hobby, whether it is hunting or competitive shooting or any other facet of our collective interests.

As for the NFA, it should’ve been repealed long ago with prohibition. If you want to compromise move to NJ, CA or NY you’ll love it there and let the rest of us be. NO COMPROMISE!

You say you want to have high capacity magazines Out Of Reach of the next Mass shooter my question would be who’s the next Mass shooter? To follow that logic we should say you can’t rent trucks from Home Depot if you’re come from certain countries. It makes no sense. We cannot legislate ourselves out of any future bad days. Bad things sometimes happen but doesn’t mean we should give up all of our rights to live our lives the way we see fit. If we are not hurting anybody why should we be paying for the crimes of the people who are hurting others? this is not like the movie Minority Report where we can tell in the future that somebody somewhere is going to do something bad and then go after them and arrest them before it happens. Part of being a human being is dealing with adversity unfortunately the senator is Right hundreds of people have died and that’s a shame. None of those innocent people should have died at the hands of these crazy nutjobs but thinking that the government is going to protect you and your family makes you just as crazy as the idiots who are shooting up places. At the end of the day your safety is in your hands if you choose not to have these things that’s fine don’t have them but nobody else should have the right to decide what I can and can’t use to defend myself and my family.

        Unfortunately, I live in CA also. We have a Demoncratic super majority in the state legislature and Gov. Moonbeam who like to pass laws without the vote of the people. And when the majority votes foe something the libs don’t like, they sue to have it changed to their way of thinking. I think we should split California into West California and East California. The split could be along I-5 from the Oregon border to the start of the Grapevine and then east to the CA, NV, AZ border. We could send all the Senate and Assembly libs and Gov Moonbeam to San Fransicko as the new capital of West California and keep Sacramento as the capital of East California. We can also keep all our water here and not send any more to West California. They can get theirs from desalinating the ocean or reclaiming their sewage. Then we will have another red state.
