In the days leading up to the biggest firearms industry expo of the year, FN America is showing off some of their new and updated AR-pattern rifles and pistols that they’re about to release to the public.

FN is putting five new FN 15 guns on display at SHOT Show 2017 later this month. The company is adding two AR pistols, two carbines and a rifle to their catalog.

First up are the new FN 15 pistols, one chambered for 5.56 NATO and the other for 300 AAC Blackout. Both feature FN’s hallmark cold hammer-forged barrels, free-floating Midwest Industries handguards, Magpul pistol grips, Phase 5 pistol buffer tubes and SB Industries pistol braces.

The 5.56 model is more compact with a 10.5-inch barrel and birdcage flash hider. The 300 BLK pistol has a longer 12-inch barrel, pistol-length gas system and a big two-baffle muzzle brake. This should help cycle a wide range of ammo types from soft sub-sonic loads to full-power 300 BLK ammo. The 5.56 pistol uses a standard carbine-length gas system.

FN is also adding two carbines, the first based on their popular FN 15 Tactical Carbine now with a flat dark earth finish. The changes aren’t just cosmetic as FN updated the gun with new furniture and accessories.

The FN 15 Tactical Carbine FDE uses the 3-prong flash suppressor originally developed for the SCAR family of rifles, a new Magpul M-Lok-compatible “P-Lok” free-floating handguard, and furniture by B5 systems. It pairs a mid-length gas system with a heavy buffer for recoil management and smooth operation.

The other new model is the FN 15 MD Heavy Barrel Carbine designed to comply with Maryland-specific rifle restrictions. While both guns have 16-inch cold hammer-forged barrels with midlength gas systems, the MD model has a heavy-profile barrel and PWS muzzle device.

Otherwise the MD Carbine is like the other standard FN 15 Carbines. It has a Midwest Industries free-floating handguard and straightforward A2-style furniture.

FN’s new full-size gun is another Maryland-compliant rifle, the FN 15 MD Heavy Barrel Rifle. It has a heavy-profile 20-inch barrel with a rifle-length gas system and a simple thread protector. Both MD models include a 10-round Magpul PMag and MBus backup sights.

FN’s new rifles and carbines have suggested prices in the $1,400 to $1,500 range which is in-line with their other FN 15 products. Don’t be surprised to see them listed for quite a bit less — FN 15s can often be found for hundreds of dollars below MSRP.

Except not one of these is an “assault rifle”

I thought maybe I’d seen an assault rifle during my second tour in Iraq. But I’m still unsure to this very day.
