FN is probably most identified with the guns that it makes for the United States military. In an effort to allow citizens to enjoy the same firearm that the military uses minus the full auto funds switch FN has introduced their military collector series. This series is made up of the three rifles they currently supply to the government.

I had a chance to shoot these guns at range day. The M4 performed just as you would have expected what was a pleasant surprise to me is how long it had been since I shot a full-sized rifle. The 20 inch M-16 was remarkably fun to shoot. The M249 was available in both the semiauto and full auto configurations for range day. If shooting these guns don’t put a smile on your face there’s something wrong.

FN 15 military collector M4 is a semiautomatic version of the M4 carbine produced for the military. It is chambered in 5.56X 45 mm, with standard military front sight and flip up rear sight. It comes to you equipped with a permanently pinned flash suppressor to get the barrel to a legal 16 inches. The accessory rail forearm includes Knights Armament rail covers and front pistol grip. As you would expect it also comes with a mil spec six position stock with two sling mounts and a pistol grip. The gun is authentic to the point of even having the UID label with QR code printed below the ejection port on the magazine well.

Next in this series is the FN 15 military collector M16 this rifle is the civilian version of the baseline military M-16. This gun is also equipped nicely with the addition of a 20 inch, alloy steel, button broached, chrome lined barrel with A2 style compensator. They have also included the fixed A2 style rifle buttstock for authenticity. You get all of the G.I. specific accessories that came with the M4, rail covers, sights and vertical foregrip.

The retail is $1749 for either rifle they are available now.

The FN M249S is the civilian version of the iconic M249 SAW that the military has been using since 1988. With the exception of firing only semiautomatic from a closed bolt it is virtually an identical rifle. It comes with a 20.5 inch cold hammer Forged, stainless steel machine gun barrel that allows for quick changes in the field. It will accept M27 linked ammunition belt or standard AR 15 magazines. With the tripod attached this beast weighs in at 17 pounds and overall length of 40.7 inches.

This gun can be yours for a mere $7999. FN is anxiously awaiting your order.

Served 1968/74 Marines…Bought one because old guys don’t like to load all those magazines..200 round belt was easier. Perfect ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE gun.. Well made, and yeah I shot and owned the real deals also. Along with the 60’s and M2H.B. All fun. If some don’t want one, It leaves more for those that do.
It says Freedom. to do and get what you want. Semper -Fi

I was a SAW gunner in the Army and the weapon wasn’t exactly reliable, especially when firing from magazines. MANY feed problems. The only thing fun about the SAW was putting suppressive fire on a target, semi auto just isn’t the same. Finding belt fed 5.56 in the civilian market would be a serious pain. And most aren’t going to want to clip in each round. Sorry guys, but this is a loser, especially at $7000 – most will just go build a beautiful AR for a fraction of that price.

  • Ben Dover February 4, 2016, 1:12 pm

Come on what took you so long to finally make a civilian version this gun.Its nothing new and they mass produce it for the military\’s around the world . So I don\’t Get why the list price is well overpriced. you guys made up a price thinking that we will pay anything for that old gun. How about make something new for 2016 and geared towards the average gun enthusiast Just not another AR 15

  • Bj mack January 28, 2016, 9:55 pm

Full auto is literally the only positive capability of the M249. There is no reason whatsoever to spend money on as semi auto version :/ color me disappointed.

  • Gary1957 January 28, 2016, 6:33 pm

I say buy a new AR-15 (in the $600’s now) or build your own if you are in that caliber(s). A more fun and exciting proposition is owning a 50 BMG Rifle! Shooting them is a blast and you can put one together for less than $3000 including a $1700 NightForce Scope (same as military uses with LIFETIME Warranty!). Now that is a rifle with a boom and can range out to a mile.

  • ak471966 January 28, 2016, 5:20 pm

they must be loosing some contract, what a joke for the money, I ll just play my old delta force game and shoot my ak variant

  • Tim January 28, 2016, 11:57 am

Old news. Last years Shot Show news. The 249 has been selling for a while. Why not tell everyone the real news from FN? According to one rep I spoke with FN is bringing back the FAL and FNC to the American market. Now that’s news.

  • kane January 28, 2016, 11:05 am

I’ll take a pass on that, still waiting for the “civilian” MP40 to become available.

  • Jimbo January 28, 2016, 10:26 am

You could say that I’m a little bit of a wannabe soldier. Never served, but I have amazing respect and admiration for those who have fought for their country. Owning a SAW, albeit semi-auto, would be pretty neat in my book – if anything I’d pull it out every now an again and feel the weight and think about all the poor bastards that had to drag that thing all over the middle East. Then I’d shake it and make a pew, pew, pew, pew noise and feel quite satisfied. I see some comments regarding the utility of the thing – looking at you Evan. If guns and shooting were about practicality and utility, we’d all have .270 bolt actions – period. It is an incorrect notion anyway. I like to prairie dog hunt every year in Wyoming and this gun mounted near the sun roof of a Suburban would be awesome! It’s a great varmint caliber, there’s a rail on top for good glass, and very few magazine changes. Boom!

  • Rooster January 28, 2016, 10:10 am

FN need’s to stop calling it a SAW witch as some may know stands for Squad Automatic Weapon. Maybe (CEW) Civilian Expensive Weapon.

    • JPB January 28, 2016, 10:54 am

Oh, come on. What about the Browning BAR?

    • Dave Hicks January 29, 2016, 1:25 pm

Hey Rooster That’s funny ! CEW I like it.

    • Luap January 31, 2016, 12:44 am

When I was in the Army, it was referred to as a (S)upport (A)utomatic (W)eapon… But really doesn’t matter now. Now civilian SAW stands for (S)emi (A)uto (W)eapon… Which is really S, A, & D.

  • Pops45 January 28, 2016, 10:08 am

    Ammo, Pizza and Beer.

  • WiscoGunner January 28, 2016, 10:07 am

I came, I SAW, I bought something more practical.

  • mike jameson January 28, 2016, 10:04 am

If you thinkt he saw was heavy. How about the m60 or a morter plate or a m2 shall I keep going. Put your heals back on and grab your purse.

  • Nogo January 28, 2016, 9:11 am

Wow, maybe if these gun manufacturers would get in line with the second amendment and produce these full auto for the public it might be worth it but FN, what a joke, melt those down and make more ar15s.

  • Coop January 28, 2016, 6:57 am

The M249 isn’t as widely hated as some think. Mine gets shot all the time. Go by any range with an M249 and ask how often it’s rented.

As for all the “why would you want it”, sounds kinda like the anti-gunners asking about the AR-15, eh?

So it’s the same price as the full auto version. GCA probably has something to do with it.

So you don’t want one? Don’t buy it. A Hi-Point 9 is about half the weight and costs only $150 and blah, blah, blah….

    • Evan January 28, 2016, 8:44 pm

There’s a difference between tourists who want to shoot anything full auto and Marines/soldiers who use the thing for work. The latter have an almost universally negative opinion of the SAW. In either case, this monstrosity isn’t even fully automatic, which is literally the defining feature of the SAW. This is a 17lb crummy rifle, not a machine gun. It has all the disadvantages of a machine gun, notably the weight and size (and presumably the accuracy as well), without the one thing that makes machine guns worthwhile.

  • Tarheel Realist January 28, 2016, 4:41 am

“This gun can be yours for a mere $7999. FN is anxiously awaiting your order.” – Article

FN may want to buy some Valium in bulk…with a price of $8K for a semi-auto 5.56, anxiety will be rampant in the Sales Dept.

  • Dan January 28, 2016, 3:31 am

$8,000? My lighter, more fun, practical, and cheaper Shrike system (NIB for me was $2,999) is better all around. Heck, even with a KAC Masterkey on my Hydra, it doesnt weigh as much as the M249. Going to have to pass on that deal, FN.

  • Evan January 28, 2016, 3:26 am

I want the 20″ one because nostalgia.

But who on earth would possibly want the semiauto SAW? The military version sucks and is widely hated, and this version leaves out the only feature that I would want, and the only feature that makes the SAW at all useful – automatic fire. As a semiauto, this thing is just a massive, heavy piece of junk that fits no useful role for anything, and probably isn’t even that fun as a range toy. Why on earth would anyone want a 17lb semiauto 5.56? It’s no good for home defense, hunting, or literally anything else. It does nothing that an AR that weighs half as much can’t do (except for accept linked ammo, a dubious feature in civilian life), and costs $8000. If I had eight grand to spend on one gun, I’d buy a Barrett or something, or maybe an M40A5 from C&R precision (and still have plenty of money left for the PMII). There is literally no good reason to buy that ridiculous monstrosity over an AR15. It’s four times the price of a really good top of the line AR, more than twice as heavy, and I guarantee it doesn’t do anything as well as a good AR does. Basically, you’re paying $800 for a rifle and another $7200 for looks. If I saw someone bring something that stupid to the range, I’d laugh at him.

    • Geoffrey Lance Jenkins January 28, 2016, 6:47 am

      Good morning Evan,
you are so right about the SAW,I used it many times during deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan,
it is bulky and not easy to carry around the FOB if you had the pleasure of being assigned to this
      beast,I would never spend $8000 for it/lol

      • pops45 January 28, 2016, 10:12 am

I shot an M249 from our armory, seemed reliable and easy to shoot, but I wasn’t lugging it around all day in 100 degree weather. Besides heavy, was it at least reliable?

      • Evan January 28, 2016, 5:04 pm

We always made the boots carry the SAW.

    • imnevergivingin January 28, 2016, 7:43 am

lol If I had $8000.00 id by a good AK or the like and spend the rest on Ammo and Pizza!

      • Alan January 28, 2016, 9:23 am

Pepperoni, mushrooms and extra cheese, please!!!!

    • AR January 28, 2016, 9:58 am

What is the best group (in semi-auto mode with steady sand bag rest) can you expect out of this M249?

    • mike jameson January 28, 2016, 10:00 am

I want one or two I used one back in the day. Granted its not fullauto but I would have great time reliving times past.

      • kane January 28, 2016, 11:15 am

Volunteering to carry the SAW made sense of it kept you from have to carry a crew served weapon and assigned AR/M16//M4. If you were in a Weapons Company and you got the chance to carry only the SAW then you should jump on it and ultimately lighten you load a keep you assigned weapon clean in the armory.

        • Evan January 28, 2016, 5:08 pm

In a rifle company you just give the SAW to a boot. Nobody else wants to deal with it, so let PFC Highandtight who thinks it’s cool anway deal with it.

    • GyMack January 28, 2016, 11:20 am

It would be much easier to wait until our military begins their door to door collections.

      • Going home January 29, 2016, 10:20 am
