Saying “panzer tank” is like saying “tank tank.” All German tanks are panzers. They called their Mark V “Panther”, but the German word for tank is panzer. In other words, the Panther and Tiger, along with the MK I, II, III, and IV, were all panzers.
The Sherman in ’44 with the 76 mm was most often one in use by the British land forces (“Firefly”)- the US Army usually had to make do with a 75 mm low velocity gun that was useful against most of the light armor encountered as well as against fortified positions. The Panther, the Tigers and the T-34 had better sloped armor that was not impressed by the short 75. But against the earlier Mks of the Panzers it was adequate. The Russians also had a potent 76 mm gun, some of which were added to the Shermans they ended up with lend/lease. Even an up-gunned Sherman had a high profile and not very good amor, but they were reliable and easy to maintain. And there were a lot of them…
Bless those poor American soldiers in those Sherman tanks for having the pure balls to go up against the superior firepower of the German Panzer Tank.
It’s my understanding that the American tankers would prefer to hide and call in the USAAF to deal with panzers.
If you were handed a fly swatter and had to go up against those Panzer Tanks you would hide and call in the fly boys too if the option presented itself to you…
They didn’t hide! They pushed through and defeated the Germans.
They possessed bravery that is all but lost in this country, and can’t be understood by the majority of the present generation.
It’s ok though, soon this generation, I’m afraid, will have to prove themselves yet again, because some have forgotten the sacrifices made by their forefathers
Some Americans are made up of virtuous individuals that are willing to die for America, and are doing it now.
Others like our entitled, dim wits with their smart phones will be the 1st to go, and drop like flies.
Yep, German armor was superior in every way except production. Using the German Tiger as an example, the Sherman’s 75mm gun could not penetrate a Tiger’s front armor. Plus the Tiger had the 88mm Kwk 43, which COULD easily penetrate a Sherman and do it from a long distance.
Regardless, we produced 53,000 Sherman tanks to a few thousand Tigers which nullified the Germans advantage.
