I live across the street from an elementary school. Needless to say, transporting a rifle from my house to the car can be an especially sensitive process.
Travelling with a rifle makes discretion even more difficult. I don’t like leaving my firearms in a hotel parking lot, but lugging a gun case across the lobby isn’t ideal, either. The Second Amendment protects my right to carry a gun when I travel, but I’d rather not have to deal with the over-eager bell boy who decides to call the police.
That’s why I was intrigued by the Vertx Professional Rifle Garment Bag. The Vertx bag is an all-in-one system that includes space for professional attire, electronics, and, of course, firearms. Its discrete design can keep a rifle concealed until it’s needed, and its quick-opening front compartment lets users access a firearm at a moment’s notice.
Unlike many other garment bags, the Vertx bag folds into three sections, which makes it compact and easy to carry. When it’s completely folded, two large exterior pockets are easily accessible.
The front pocket is padded to prevent printing, and it includes Velcro-lined Molle webbing to attach a wide variety of firearms and accessories. This compartment can also hold a rifle with an overall length of less than 28”. The length limitation disqualifies most non-SBR rifles, but any rifle that breaks down can be transported in its broken-down configuration. The front pocket also includes an oversized zipper handle for rapid deployment.
The rear pocket is entirely lined with Velcro, which allowed me to mount a handgun and retain lots of room for other items.
Unfolding the bag reveals space for a suit coat and shirts as well as two mesh pockets for toiletries, shoes, pants, and additional clothing. There’s enough space for five coat hangers, and the entire bag can be hung up using the detachable hook.
Re-folding the bag reveals a number of additional security features. First, each of the three sections can be secured with snap-on fasteners to prevent unfolding, and the entire unit can be cinched down using two compression straps with aluminum G-hooks.
A coated, braided stainless steel cable runs through the middle of the bag, which can be locked to a secure object to prevent smash-and-grab thefts. Finally, the bag features a pass-through back panel to secure the bag to a trolley handle, like this .
I was impressed with the overall quality of the bag. It isn’t cheap (MSRP: $269.95), but it’s worth the money. The zippers appear to be tough and well-made. Vertx manufactures the bag with 1680 denier ballistic nylon, which keeps the weight down while also providing excellent tearing and damage resistance. (Check out this video for a great explanation of 1680 denier ballistic nylon). The aluminum carry handle is wrapped in full-grain leather, and the shoulder strap is made with rubberized material to prevent sliding.
The devil is in the details, so I always appreciate when companies put lots of thought into their product design. The Vertx bag includes Velcro panels above the coat hanger for mounting a handgun and other accessories. This allows users to access these items quickly even when the bag is unfolded and hung up. The oversized, rapid-deployment handle is a nice touch, and the “tri-glide” zipper makes it easy to access clothing and other items.
If you’re looking for a high-quality garment bag, be sure to check out Vertx Professional Rifle Garment Bag. Even if you don’t plan to carry firearms on your next business trip, the Vertx bag gives you that option. It’s worth the money as a garment bag alone, but the Molle webbing and Velcro sections allow for a huge variety of concealed carry options.
