Gun-Control Group Starts Petition to Stop DOJ Funding for Gun Safety Education, Free Gun Locks

2nd Amendment – R2KBA Authors Current Events S.H. Blannelberry This Week

What’s so controversial about gun safety education and free gun locks that would compel a gun-control advocacy group to start a petition in an effort to defund the government-backed initiative?

Well, according to the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, a D.C.-based gun-control organization, the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s Project ChildSafe, which was recently awarded a 2.4 million grant by the by the U.S. Dept. of Justice, ought to be defunded because the partnership between the DOJ and the NSSF is “deeply troubling.”

To be clear, Project ChildSafe is an initiative that is designed to supply gun owners with free locks and information on how to be a safe and responsible gun owner. There is nothing political about it.

Yet, CSGV believes that since the NSSF, the firearms industry trade association, has opposed certain gun laws that it shouldn’t be entitled to government funding. Specifically, the CSGV says the NSSF is guilty of the following:

  • Opposes all legislation that would require parents to safely store firearms in the home in the manner described in their Project ChildSafe Safety Kit brochure.
  • Opposes Child Access Prevention laws to hold adults criminally responsible when children gain unauthorized access to their firearms.
  • Supports unprecedented legal immunity for the gun industry, which prevents parents (and others) from bringing lawsuits against the industry when they market and/or distribute their products in a negligent manner.
  • Supports lowering the age at which Americans can purchase firearms and carry them in public.

CSGV goes on to say that “Whatever good might be done by Project ChildSafe is vastly outweighed by the harm NSSF does in lobbying for reckless gun laws,” adding that “No taxpayer in America should have to foot the bill for a profit-focused lobby looking to improve its public image.”

CSGV believes that the $2.4 million grant should be given to a “better partner for gun violence prevention.”

To be honest, I think that’s what this petition is all about. It’s about the money. The NSSF got a grant that the CSGV probably wanted.

I have no problem with nonprofit advocacy groups and trade associations, but their very existence is dependent on donations from the public, including corporations, and grants from the government. And at times the mission to raise money trumps whatever cause they’re pushing. It’s just the way it is. So, when a sizable government grant is given out to a competitor or rival organization, one can see why there would be consternation and resentment from the organization that was overlooked.

Yet, even in CSGV’s quest for donation dollars, the larger goal of securing firearms and educating people on gun safety shouldn’t be forgotten. In this case, the NSSF’s Project ChildSafe is a legit program. Instead of trying to take down the NSSF for beating them this time around, CSGV should take solace in the fact that lives will be saved.  That’s what ultimately matters, regardless of which side of the gun debate one falls on.

In a statement, the NSSF responded to the petition. Here is an excerpt:

Following announcement of the award, two gun-control groups voiced opposition to the Department of Justice’s decision to select NSSF and Project ChildSafe to receive the grant. It is unfortunate that these groups, which do not have comprehensive, practical firearms safety programs of their own, cannot find common ground to support the goals of this successful, long-standing safety initiative…

Why don’t these ridiculous gun control groups just go to bloomberg or soros and ask them for money, I’m sure they will get it if it is for gun control anything .All of these people make me sick . Second amendment supporter here !

Simply look at the money that the leaders of most gun control groups make, and you will KNOW the reason for this.
Every single one of them is rich, having gotten that way by preying on people’s stupid fears and hatred.
    It’s their livelihood.

“Supports unprecedented legal immunity for the gun industry, which prevents parents (and others) from bringing lawsuits against the industry when they market and/or distribute their products in a negligent manner.”
Seeing that the firearms industry is heavily regulated and scrutinized by the federal government, and that all distribution and sales not made in accordance with the law are illegal, does the CSGV seriously think that the NSSF supports illegal activity on the part of gun manufacturers? Rubbish! Marketing and distribution of firearms is either legal or illegal. As long as it’s done legally, it can’t be “negligent.”

The gun control group is against the NSSF wanting to lower the gun purchase and carry age? The legal age to buy a handgun and carry it is already 21. Yet you can drive a car at 16 which has contributed to an astronomical amount of more deaths and injuries than guns could ever be related to, minus the 20,000 per year suicides as result of people taking anti-depressants from licensed drug dealers, idiots… Also the legal age to go to a hostile foreign country, carry fully auto weapons, explosives and get shot at is 18. Not to mention to be drafted against your will and fight for this circus show is 18.
Concerning lawsuits, did CSGV mean frivolous lawsuits since 90% of lawsuits conflicting any of the 10 amendments usually are.
So with that example in mind, under who’s rules does this gun control group base their opposition of the NSSF’s reasoning? Sounds like a Bloomberg funded agency crying because they did not get the funding to be a dictator for the people.

Well…your partly correct. The minimum age to buy an handgun or handgun ammunition IS 21. But in some states it is perfectly legal for people under 21 to be in POSSESSION of a handgun. in Utah for example, at age 18 you can OPEN carry a handgun legally, with some other restrictions. In Nevada, you can legally poses a handgun at 16, and OPEN carry at 18, again with certain restrictions.
Otherwise I agree with just about everything you said

It’s no wonder most thinking people ignore organizations like this—they’re too stupid to exist!!!

“Gun Locks” are a joke. Everybody I know has scads of em lying around and they never get used. Guns are for emergency defense. Hindering the ability to quickly access and utilize them renders the very concept of “home defense” useless. In spite of what some unheard of Australian comics might have to say. They pass em out free all the time. I used to take em just to make the fools happy. But after taking a closer look, the vast majority of them make your guns no more secure than if they weren’t locked at all. I wouldn’t use one of these silly items to lock up my trash cans, let alone my cheapest Saturday night special. They can be defeated by hand with the strength an average teenager can muster on bad day. Even a five year old with a screwdriver or hammer. As far as education is concerned, these anti gun, pro crime subversives want to forcefully bury our kids heads in the sand. You know who else is anti education? The Taliban. They shoot little girls in head on their way to school in order to keep them from learning just how badly they’re actually being treated. These anti education groups need to be called out for what they really are. This country is on it’s way to hell in a hand basket, and frankly I don’t think even Trump can get it back for us. Lock, load, hoard ammo and stay ready. Family and friends should be our biggest concern. The current state of things is not “sustainable”, to steal a term from the lunatics……..

The “CSGV” wants everyone to call 911 if they see an “open carry.” I think they share the same broom closet with the “Violence Policy Center.”

  • Jake Z September 18, 2015, 6:57 pm

Seriously this just ridiculous, all it does is show that these anti gun groups are truly not interested in any way about actual gun safety, or preventing tragic deaths for that matter. Just in it so they can score a buck, it’s fucking sickening. I just donated to Project Childsafe today and got half my office at work to do the same. How could anyone with an ounce of logical thought in their head thing trigger locks and education are a bad thing. That’s like Ford saying don’t wear seatbelts because Chevy came up with the concept!

It suits the Libtard agenda to keep accidental shootings, especially among children, as high as possible.
