A gun shop owner was killed Friday defending his store from a small group of armed robbers, local media reports.
Jon Bieker, the co-owner of “She’s a Pistol” in Shawnee, Kansas, was fatally wounded after four armed robbers entered his store around 2:15 p.m.
Jon’s wife Rebecca, the other co-owner, was injured during the incident by one of the suspects who hit or punched her in the face, said police.
Yet, the criminals didn’t get away scot-free as Jon and Rebecca Bieker fought back, shooting at the four suspects, leaving two critically injured and one wounded. The fourth suspect was not harmed.
All were placed under arrest by police.
Local Councilwoman Michelle Distler told The Kansas City Star that Jon Bieker was “one of the nicest people that you’d ever meet.”
“He and Becky were both very, very involved in the community,” Distler explained. They were “big supporters of the Shawnee Police Department and Shawnee Downtown Partnership. They’ve been great resources for teaching self-defense, especially for women, and not just firearm self-defense.
“He’ll be sorely missed.”
Shawnee Mayor Jeff Meyers released a statement Friday to address the incident.
“Today is a day of great sadness in our city,” wrote the mayor.
Meyers praised the couple, saying they were respected business owners “who do things the right way and are always willing to go out of their way to help others.”
“The simple fact is there is no place for this type of violence in Shawnee or any other city,” Meyers continued. “We pride ourselves on being a safe and friendly city and today’s events, while unbelievably tragic, will not change that. I want to pass along my condolences to the entire Bieker family. As they deal with this tremendous loss, I know our community stands ready to assist in any way that we can.”
“She’s a Pistol” is described on its website as “a woman-owned personal protection and self-defense training, services, and supplies company based in Shawnee, Kan. We are not a ‘guy’s gun shop’ nor are we specifically a ‘girl’s gun shop.’ We specialize in providing a comfortable environment to learn self-defense techniques for men and women.”
