Watch: Would-Be Gun Thief Shot By Elderly Victim

Darius Summers, 61, is a musician.

Earlier this month, an armed gun thief in Detroit saw an elderly concealed carry permit holder and presumably thought to himself: easy target.

What that young punk didn’t realize is that although 61-year-old Darius Summers is relatively new to the world of firearms, he wasn’t afraid to use his in self-defense.

Summers was visiting his local gas station on the West Side of the city to grab a cup of coffee when he was confronted by 16-year-old Xavier Futrell.

“I just wanted some coffee, so I walked down here,” Summers told Detroit 4 News.

Futrell cornered Summers in the store, pointing his own gun at the man’s back.  He refused to let the Summers, a grandfather, leave the station, despite him doing his best to reason with the teen.

“I said, ‘All I want to do is leave,'” Summers said. “He said, ‘You can’t leave.’ I said, ‘OK. What do you want to do?'”

Summers turned away from the teen and then drew his gun, firing one shot into Futrell’s stomach.  The teen dropped the gun he was holding and fell backward.

“I didn’t shoot to kill, I shot to save his life,” Summers said. “I got him up off me.”

Holding his stomach, Futrell stumbled toward the door. He managed to grab the handgun he had dropped before exiting.

In that very moment, Summers showed immense restraint not to fire on the thug who, one could certainly argue, became a threat, yet again, after he picked up that firearm.

But as mentioned, the permit holder is new to the concealed carry lifestyle.

“I’d never been through this,” Summers said. “Never shot a gun before. All this is new to me.”

Futrell would survive the incident. But he is now facing a slew of charges, including assault with intent to murder, carrying a weapon with unlawful intent and a felony firearms violation.

Let’s hope they throw the book at him.

As for Summers, he is very lucky to have survived the encounter unscathed.  While one can laud his compassion for the Futrell, he took a big risk by letting his assailant pick that gun back up… would you have done the same?

Nick Gertz should have eaten lead. That is all Nick Gertz understand.

In answer to the final question; No.
I’m trained to double tap, (Center mass) especially an armed assailant!
Shoot to wound a gun wielding assailant?????
Still, as a newbie I congratulate him, he’s alive.

If the perp had him on the ground already, maybe a gut shot was all the opportunity the victim had??? I would’ve placed a head shot he went to pick up his gun again though!!!

the only thing sad about the footage is the thug not dying.

  • Ron W September 2, 2017, 9:22 am

The young perp got what he needed instead of what he wanted.

I can’t believe this. I was there. He said, “Hands up, don’t shoot,” and grandpy still shot him. (Sarcasm intended)

The only thing I want to know is, how did the 16 yr. old know the 61 yr. old was carrying, “concealed”?

Ruined by corporate off-shoring and liberal politics, Detroit is now a producer of thugs instead of things made in the USA. There is no question this young thug should be removed from the gene pool before he injures or kills anyone. If someone reaches the age of consent and still doesn’t know right from wrong, then “natural selection” should prevent them from harming others and reproducing. It has been said that when people have nothing to lose, they lose it. Sadly, because blue-collar manufacturing and other jobs have been exported to the slave-labor of Red China, many of America’s inner cities have become breeding grounds for violence and murder, their young and desperate inhabitants turning to drug dealing and other crime to subsist. Idle hands are indeed the devil’s workshop. Combine this with fatherless homes and drug dealers, gangs and “gangsta rap” become mentors for young men who need responsible fathers to lay down the law and keep them in line. Like Chicago’s murder rate, nothing will change in these inner-cities until we bring gainful employment and a work ethic back to America, while stressing the necessity for a responsible father and mother in the home. Replacing the breadwinner with a monthly check from Uncle Sam is not a solution. Youngsters need responsible dads and moms. Good parenting prevents a multitude of sins.

Nice that this “gentle giant” got popped in the store, in the act, on camera. It’s also good that Mr. Summers was black as well, or we’d have yet another bunch of “gentle giant riots”.
I love it when Libbrul cries of “Guns are only eeeeeeevil” turn turtle.

I think the the elderly man (61 HA,HA) was right at shooting the punk, but to have a CPL here in Michigan he has to shot a least 50 to 100 rounds to get his carry license, I’m 77 and carried a gun for 25 yeas on a general permit but when they came out with the new carry law I hand to go to the class and go through the training to get a CPL here in Michigan.

He’s a lucky guy. If it were me,he never would have picked that gun back up,no sir.
What kind of malfuntion did this imbecile suffer from?

  • Dr Motown September 1, 2017, 9:49 am

Futrell will get a plea-bargain and be out on the streets in less than 5 years….the next time he won’t make the same mistake and an innocent victim will probably lose his life. Should’ve finished him with 2 more to the center mass

    • Ronnie September 1, 2017, 10:02 am

Dr Motown, You are just about 100 % correct.

  • Allen Lawson September 1, 2017, 9:28 am

Not unless I was out of ammo. Then I would use whatever was handy to take him completely out of the picture. I am sure there are lots of potential weapons in that store

  • American September 1, 2017, 9:01 am

As a former victim of an armed robbery ,I feel for Mr.Summers. However if the “thug” came back to pick up his weapon , I would have taken that as the fight was NOT over. I would have shot my attacker twice or more then when he came back I would have shot him again . You have to stand firm and end the attack.

Elderly at 61??? What would you call someone concealed carrying at age 75, ancient? Admittedly. 61 is not like being an athletic 25 to 35, but by today’s standards 61 is probably equivalent to the old 45 to 50. I’m 80 and have my Indiana license to carry, and hopefully I never need to use my concealed weapon. If I do, I won’t be able to say “I never fired a gun before” because I do practice at the shooting range or on my brother-in-law’s farm. What is that guy thinking. carrying a loaded gun and not having ever fired it? He’s got to be one of the luckiest people alive! There are some foolish (or just plain stupid) people out there.

    • Tenbones September 1, 2017, 9:57 am

I agree! I’m a retired LEO and I’ll be 75 in a couple weeks and I still practice my shooting. One of the big complaints I have of the CCW process (and this will probably get me flamed) and this video is a good example, is the number of people who get a CCW and not have a clue as to what this responsibility entails. Pretty scary.

My take on what he meant was, ‘prior to getting his permit’, he had never owned or fired a gun, not that he obtained a permit without having to have fired one. I believe any jurisdiction regulating concealed carry requires a minimum level of training and qualification firing. On the other hand, states like Alaska that allow unlicensed carry have no training/qualification requirement.

Darius Summers is the example of how crime in Detroit is going to drop. When thugs realize that when they mess with the bull they may get the horn, they will think twice about their actions. I have sympathy for Mr summers, no one in their right mind wants to shoot someone. He showed restraint in not shooting him again when he picked up his fallen weapon, I hope that if i am ever in that situation that I too can behave as he did.

    • David Kasull September 2, 2017, 11:28 am

why would you hope you act with restraint? So the thug could take a shot at you again? these aren’t innocent little babies. they’re murderous predators.

  • Joe September 1, 2017, 5:44 am

Good shooting old timer !! That young thug deserved what he got for preying on a senior citizen.
