Tactical firearms and accessory manufacturer Hera Arms is working on a new set of FN P90-inspired stocks and grips for AR-15 rifles and SBRs. The set offers shooters the same handling as the ground-breaking personal defense weapon or PDW without any of the trappings of a proprietary bullpup.

Hera calls them the Close Quarters Rifle or CQR set which includes two versions of polymer stock and a matching polymer foregrip. The stocks appear to be adjustable for length with spacer inserts between the stock and buttpad. The foregrip mounts directly to handguards with a 12-o’clock rail.

The stocks include a pistol grip and trigger guard. Because of this, they may not work with non-standard AR-15 lowers with integral trigger guards. The upside is that the CQR stocks eliminate the need to buy pistol grips and trigger guard assemblies, lowering the overall cost to the builder.

One of the stocks is a California-compliant variant of the stock with a blocked-out thumbhole. The stocks feature multiple sling attachment points for quick-detach and conventional slings. The stock has sling points on both sides to accommodate both left- and right-handed shooters.

And while the set was designed to work with compact rifles with short barrels and handguards they will work with full-size rifles just fine.

The company expects to have these parts available for pre-order in the next month or two. Hera expects to price the standard stocks at $119, the California stocks at $124 and the pistol grips at $39. The company will launch with the set in three colors, black, tan and olive drab.

Hera Arms manufactures a solid lineup of AR components, accessories, and complete firearms. They also produce conventional pistol grips and foregrips along with windowed polymer magazines and free-floating handguard systems.

The P90 saw good success among specialized military, security and police forces around the world. Its stylized outline and then-futuristic looks also made it a star in movies, television and video games since its introduction in 1990.

But today short-barreled versions of the AR-15 rifle are taking its place among professional and private shooters alike. The huge aftermarket combined with newer projectile designs and better components have allowed the AR to take a bite out of the PDW market.

Hera Arms isn’t the only company with plans for P90-like AR furniture this year. FourGuysGuns got a sneak peek at the upcoming DEX stock from new firm KILN — names subject to change — that also has the swept lines of the FN P90.

One thing that makes the DEX stick out is that it looks like it’s adjustable, not modular. Details are still thin on the DEX stock but that could end soon. According to FourGuysGuns the DEX is on-track for release later this year.

With accessories like these, the gap between AR-15 and dedicated PDW just got a little narrower.

We ALL took Masamune Shirow and Appleseed way too seriously.

Good looking stuff is great and I’m a big proponent of forward design. But ARs are setup a certain way for a reason. You guys taking guns off the market as trophies and art really need to find a hobby that doesn’t gobble up ammo that should be used to save lives – myself included.

I think it looks awesome. And wow, a lot of douche bags post on this site.

So, I’m seeing a lot of calls about mall ninja status on this stock, but I’ll be honest, with the right upper and hand guard, and a bit more fleshing out for the rest of the platform it lives on, this stock and fore grip scratch a very specific aesthetic itch for me, personally, and is priced in such a way that is justifiable, for me under the “rule of cool.” I like the look of thumb hole stocks. If this came with a more curved p90 style grip, instead of a traditional style pistol grip, I’d probably like it even more than I already do. It’ll certainly turn heads at the range, and will probably take paint like a boss, which means I may buy 2 sets, one for beating up on the range on a weekly basis, and one for aesthetic purposes, as I start digging deeper into my pursuit of guns as functional art pieces.

I’m seeing a lot of hate on this and I can’t believe the hipocrisy. Stop being Fudds and just look at it as it really is: optional, cool furniture for someone’s AR. Stop trying to Armchair Commando on the Internet and hold your breath until someone tries it. It looks cool, and I’d like to see more of this than the standard fugly AR look that people still expect me to pay $800 for.

The price is right for such a drastic change in looks and ergonomics. This is the one thing to change my mind, and make me get an AR. I’m normally an AK guy, but this definitely makes me look at the platform more.

Deadass, I’m probably going to put this on my Gbbr.

  • Mike Mittman November 4, 2016, 8:21 pm

Is there a market for this, yes a small one for arm chair comandos or those wanting to one up a buddy. Depending on the outcome of November 8th the market for something like this could be extremely large and very lucrative. Not something I’m interested in at the present, but maybe forced to look closely at these, I really hope not.

Real serious down to business look !

Nice way to make a 6lb lightweight AR weigh 10lbs. SMH

Jack Reacharound just messed his ninja pants. The Fanboys and video gamers are going to love this thing.

You are so right now I can have a halo assault rifle for real lol

  • JoshO November 4, 2016, 10:24 am

    Umm…why?

    • McGee November 4, 2016, 10:46 pm

Why not? There’s a lot of “Oh no! Something different! Bad!” in here. But how does that make each of you any different than the Fudds?

      It really doesn’t.

    Stop, Ninja Time!

  • Burns November 4, 2016, 10:05 am

Big waste of time and just a rediculous platform for a nice small AR

  • David November 4, 2016, 9:56 am

I must say that it looks pretty good on the SBR. Would have been nice to see on a 16 incher.

  • KurtW November 4, 2016, 9:43 am

Ninja-riffic!!! Add-on cladding to make an AR unwieldy without bullpupping to at least provide SOME benefit in the OAL/barrel length aspect.
    Skip.

  • David Donley November 4, 2016, 9:33 am

    Interesting.
Innovation shifts gears to widen the spectrum of -15 sporting rifle missions. Loved the P90 profile but thought the niche was too small for my limited resources and another caliber to manage in the safe.
That expanded ops bandwith spells the doom of many a feral hog. And perhaps will give the zombies pause when they see it too.

  • Hangon November 4, 2016, 9:22 am

As soon as I read this I was thinking what a waste. Serves no purpose for any application other than looks. “I can’t afford a ps90 so I’ll slap some stuff on it that looks like it”. Maybe add a vertical adjustable cheek weld and it could be used like a PRS.

  • Willy Roentgen November 4, 2016, 8:45 am

One of the primary features of the P90 is the magazine and it mounting, It does not stick out the bottom but is aligned with the barrel, and the spent shell ejection is downward. This minimizes the size and protuberance and has less hazards to team mates.

  • Will Drider November 2, 2016, 12:20 pm

FN P90, OAL: 26.2 . Your not going to put a 16 inch barrel, gas impengment AR rifle in that stock and get 26.2 OAL.
Lipstick and rouge for mall ninja’s. Thumb hole shoulder stock looks more like a MAK 90. Forend designe eliminates a lot of grip and mounting (bipod) options, which might be okay if you got a handier package but that is not the case.

    • Infidel November 4, 2016, 4:21 am

Since when do you use a bipod for close quarters combat?? There is no need for one.

      • David November 4, 2016, 9:55 am

Well on Battlefield it’s bipod hanging down. They can’t put it in a video game if it is not correct.

    • McGee November 4, 2016, 11:00 pm

A fudd will say the same thing about your pistol grip and adjustable stock.
