As more and more Illinoisans begin to exercise their newly restored right to carry concealed firearms outside the home, non-gun owning folks have to learn to adjust to the new normal.
Essentially, they need to recognize that not everyone with a firearm is a bad guy.
Yes, this will take time. And there will be instances where a permit holder accidentally exposes the firearm concealed around his waist, which will indubitably alarm non-gun owners.
It can happen at anytime, whether it’s when one is bending down to pick up a can of soup from a lower shelf at a grocery store or attempting to hail a cab near a busy street or even while riding a motorcycle on a congested highway, as the video above points out.
The key is for onlookers to (1) not panic, (2) remember the new state law that passed last year legalizing concealed carry, and (3) use sound judgment.
If the guy carrying the firearm looks suspicious or like he’s up to no good or is not making a concerted effort to conceal the handgun then by all means contact the police. But if exposing the gun appeared to be an accident while he was doing normal everyday things, and he’s just going on about his business, then leave him be.
To sum it up, folks need to use common sense when evaluating the situation.
