It’s Official: Oregon Governor Signs Background Check Bill into Law

2nd Amendment – R2KBA Authors S.H. Blannelberry This Week

As expected, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown signed universal background check measure SB 941, also known as “The Oregon Firearms Safety Act,” into law Monday.

“We have an obligation to protect Oregonians from gun violence,” Brown said brown at the signing, as OregonLive reported. “If we want to keep our kids, schools and communities safe, we must make it harder for dangerous people to get guns.”

Under the language of SB 941, background checks are required on the majority of private sales and transfers. Failure to comply with the law could result in a year in jail a $6,250 fine or both. Second time offenders face a $250,000 fine, up to 10 years in prison or both.

However, there are exemptions for “family members, law enforcement, inherited firearms and certain temporary transfers” (e.g. temporary transfer at a gun range or during a hunting trip).

The passage of SB 941 was a big victory for gun control organizations, including American for Responsible Solutions, the group founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly.

“Today, Oregon became a safer place to live and joined a growing list of states that have had what Congress has not: the courage to stand up to the gun lobby,” the couple said in a statement.

Opponents of the measure argued that it would do virtually nothing to stop criminals from obtaining firearms.

“The good intentions behind Senate Bill 941 do not change the fact that it is a deeply flawed and unenforceable piece of legislation that targets responsible, law-abiding Oregonians,” said Rep. Mike McLane, the top Republican in the House.

The National Rifle Association echoed those thoughts, pointing out that bad guys don’t purchase firearms through legal channels.

“The vast majority of criminals get their guns through theft, the black market, straw purchases or from friends and family members,” said Catherine Mortensen in a statement, not from sales subject to a background check.

So glad I left that liberal state. So much so that I will not go back to visit family.
To the responsible gun owners of America – The day will come when they (anti gun advocates) will see that what they have been pushing for is nothing more than an a** pain for everyone. America’s law enforcement can only handle so much and in case you have not noticed – that so much – it is getting closer and closer. Taking away rights or even bending the amendments wording is not going to change the inevitable. THE CHINEASE LEADERSHIP SAID IT BEST, INVADING THE UNITED STATES WONT HAPPEN BY THE CHINEASE. Everyone owns a gun there, it would be too costly of a campaign we would eventually loose.
Be careful politicians. We the people put you into office, we can take you out of that seat. Just look at Oregon’s previous governor.

Registration, Background checks, ammo limits, bought and paid for politicians that make us all look bad….. all the tools of the gun grabbers. The real test is when they feel they are ready to come take our arms. I will be happy to let You inspect all of Mine…. Bullets first of course!

Um,……….does this new law require that the serial number and model number be recorded on a state database?
No one should object to finding out if a prospective gun buyer is a violent felon or an adjudged dangerous psychopath. However, why would any government want to record the details of the firearm being purchased?

Perhaps, that government fears an armed populace, and has plans to confiscate all firearms at a future date? Crazy talk?
OK, again the question: why would any government want to record the details about a gun being purchased by a citizen that has already cleared a background check? If the gun buyer is a righteous citizen, what other aspect about him or her does the state need to know?

To put it another way, was the new law a simple background check law, or was it a defacto gun registration law?

What part of “Shall not be infringed” doesn’t the rat faced little weasel-ette gubnerd not understand!? Here, we got rid of one lying politico only to inherit another. Christmas! We need an American Ninja Brigade whose sole purpose is to assassinate politicians who violate the constitutional oath of office they take to insinuate themselves into the body politic. Termites. They are nothing else.

    • Dennis siegler May 18, 2015, 4:37 pm

Where can I join the brigade?

    • Mike DeRusha June 12, 2015, 8:35 pm

All politicians should have to do their jobs in a building with no locks or bodyguards. They can then decide if carrying a gun is a right or privilige.

I can’t believe this dirty gash has the audacity to say “I’m very pleased I have the privilege to sign the bill into law”. Basically please that she is further eroding the rights and freedoms of Oregonians. You are NOT as FREE as you think you are. That which the government giveth, the government can (and will) taketh away. WAKE UP AMERICA!! That dirty dike should be treated like any other traitor! Personally, I hope that when she dies, however that may manifest, that it’s horrific and extremely painful and slow…very, very sloooooooooooooow!

That dirty gash is a traitor to her nation and her state and apparently is too stupid to know what “Shall Not Be Infringed” means! Your country WANTS to take your guns and it will erode your rights at every opportunity it can. Little by little people they are breaking it down, taking more and more, restricting more and more, limiting more and more and we just sit idly by and do NOTHING to deal with these treasonous traitors!! You are going to lose everything America because you refuse to stand the heII up for the freedoms out Founding Fathers spilled blood for. America will get what it deserves for our complacency, our apathy and our will ignorance!! This raunchy gash has no idea what freedom actually is and she’s selling this buIIsh1t under the guise of “safety” and all these mofo’s just eat it up. I hate what my country has metastasized into. We are NOT as free as we think we are, we’re just told we’re free and we are stupid enough to believe it because we can get in our cars and drive somewhere. Just like free range cattle free. That dirty filthy gash!!

Owning a gun in Oregon just became a privilege. The background check adds you to a database with all the foibles that you can imagine, i.e. misuse by the state or individuals, hacking by anti-gun groups or individuals, any government group (NSA, FBI, Obama’s police, local police) you name it.
They would say, the law doesn’t keep your information, yeah right, believing that, I would suspect that Brooklyn has more than one bridge.
The sad thing is, if all the gun owners had voted, the liberal democratic socialists governor and her two cohorts (comrades) would not have been elected and Oregon would be a free state.

If you follow this, The previous governor won the election by fraud and deceit. Then he was forced out for corruption, after 4 months, placing the speaker in the position they needed. They had no other candidate, and Richardson; the Republican candidate had no chance for the seat this way.

    • Mike DeRusha June 12, 2015, 8:29 pm

Thats what we get for allowing California to dump all their losers on us. They’re doing their best to ruin our home and turn it into LA.
      We need Tom McCall back.

  • Joe T. May 18, 2015, 9:17 am

LOL! Do you really believe this makes you safer? I hope you know bad guys that use guns to rob and kill don’t care how many laws you pass. All you have done is added burden to law abiding citizens.

  • Charles May 18, 2015, 8:52 am

To all the anti gun advocates who feel they have won a victory, please tell me just one shooting that this bill would have stopped. Sandy Hook-no…Columbine high-no…Gabrielle Gifford-no….Colorado movie theatre-no….Just tell me one!!!!!!

  • john May 18, 2015, 8:22 am

We should try background checks for transferring drugs. That’ll finally win the drug war.

    • Mike DeRusha June 12, 2015, 8:25 pm

Why would they want to end that cash cow?

  • Jim Harrison May 18, 2015, 6:34 am

It doesn’t work for underage kids purchasing cigarettes so I guess it was time to try it on gun control as well. Our tax dollars well at work.

  • Steven May 18, 2015, 5:51 am

“Dangerous people” = “law-abiding citizens”, and the criminals just shake their heads and laugh.

  • walt dexters May 18, 2015, 5:05 am

Does this mean the people of Oregon can be bought just like the people of Washington?

    • Mike DeRusha June 12, 2015, 8:24 pm

It means a horde of California transplants have moved here and started turning it into Pansyland.
Native Oregonians aren’t this stupid. Usually.

  • john plough May 12, 2015, 2:00 pm

Does this mean bugulars can no longer steal guns without a background check?
