Flexing your creative muscles is not always rewarded in the gun industry, and often the opposite is true. Entire gun companies have been founded on copying the 100 year old 1911 design, the 100+ year old Winchester and Marlin rifle designs, decades old Smith & Wesson revolvers, and now of course the expired Stoner patent with the AR-15 platform. On the flip side we have but one example of a new and innovative product that has caught on and made it big. Three guesses? Ok it’s Glock. But try to think of another. You won’t find one.

Kel-Tec, it seems, doesn’t really care about all of that. I don’t know if the safe road seems boring to them, or if they are just compulsive engineers. But I can assure you that there is one big, bigger, BIGGEST story at SHOT Show this year, and it is Kel-Tec’s first ever shotgun, the KSG.

If we didn’t have a video of the gun I’m not sure I could even explain it properly. I stood back for a while and watched the crowd (more of a swarm actually), around the Kel-Tec booth today, and there was a palpable aura of disbelief. Some people got it, you could see, but a lot of people just didn’t, and even a one minute dis-assembly/re-assembly of the gun didn’t seem to help. This is a completely new firearm, from concept, to design, to gun on the shelf (it won’t be on the shelves until fall), and as exciting as this is, in the climate of a skeptical gun buying public that is our industry, Kel-Tec has a long road to go for the KSG to gain long term commercial success. The potential for the gun is staggering, much like it was for Glock, and if the KSG is as sturdy and reliable as it is innovative, this gun could become the standard for Law Enforcement and consumer tactical shotgun sales in the years to come.

The KSG is a bull-pup shotgun design that has two magazine feed tubes, each side capable of holding 7 shells, for a total capacity of 14 +1. Yes folks, that is not a misprint, 14 shells in the magazine, one in the pipe, for a total of a 15 round pump shotgun with no external magazine. You flip between the two tubes with a lever, so you can put buckshot in one side, slugs in the other, or breaching rounds in one side and buckshot in the other, etc.

But, as brilliant, original and inspired as this may seem, that is only the beginning of what I think is a very long story for the KSG. I haven’t fired the gun yet (nobody has from what I can tell), but the Kel-Tec engineers appear to be ready to take on a skeptical and finicky gun buying public by anticipating consumer resistance to new ideas in firearm design. In particular they addressed two big issues even in this early prototype.

The Bull-Pup Issue – One question you are going to hear about the KSG right out of the gate is “Is it legal for civilian purchase?” This is because it looks too short to be legal. A shotgun, by law, has to have an 18”+ barrel or it is falls under the National Firearms Act (like machineguns) as “any other weapon” and requires a special permit and tax to own.

The KSG has an 18.5” barrel, which is perfectly legal, but the chamber is not over or in front of your trigger hand like it is in a standard pump shotgun. The chamber is actually resting against your shoulder, with your cheek resting against the side of it. This backs the whole gun up, making it seem impossibly short to be legal.

In the American market, bull-pup designs have not been widely successful. FNH has made some great in-roads with their PS90, but even that has something of a cult following. Bull-pup designs have been around for decades, but you can spend a whole day at a busy range and not see one. If you do it will probably be either the PS90 or the RFB, which was the last gutsy and ground breaking product from Kel-Tec in a .308 bull-pup rifle.

The biggest complaint you will hear about bull-pups, and I heard it today at the Kel-Tec booth, is that people are afraid of the shell going off next to their head. Because as rare as is that a gun blows out from a barrel obstruction or faulty ammunition, it can theoretically happen with any gun, and taking the chance with it next to your head is a little scary if there are no protections in place. Kel-Tech apparently did their homework and anticipated this concern with consumers, so they built in a blast shield. The KSG stock surrounds the action of the gun and completely protects the shooter. It is made of 1/16th inch steel, so any energy directed out of the action will naturally seek the path of least resistance and be directed down through the rear ejection port of the gun, at the ground.

2nd Generation Features in a 1st Gen Gun. – One of the biggest issues I have with many firearms is that they rush to get guns to market without fully thinking through the needs and desires of the consumer. The gun hits the market and instantly consumers want things that were not included in the first design. Does it come in different finishes? Will it accept an accessory rail? Does it shoot different types of ammo? .

Kel-Tec has learned from the mistakes of others and are releasing the KSG with many features that you would traditionally expect on a 2nd generation version of a new gun. It will come stock with both a lower and an upper accessory rail. One of the prototypes at the booth had a front handle already attached, and it was really sweet. Another of the prototypes today was finished in an alternate drab green color, and as part of the demonstration, we learned that the KSG accepts 2 3/4” shells in the magazine, and possibly a little shorter, but it doesn’t take the new stubby shells. It does have a 3” chamber, but 3” shells have to be fed manually. There are even two holes in the grip to hold the two take down pins when you take the gun apart.

I am envisioning a wall of sticky notes at Kel-Tec with ideas on them that all led to this gun, and they seem to have thought of just about everything.

The KSG is going to generate a lot of early excitement when it becomes available in the fall, but the true test of any new concept in firearm design is to get beyond the early adopter phase (raise your hand if you are an early adopter). I think this gun is going to make it. Kel-Tec as a company has demonstrated the desire and ability to better their products over the years and I’m sure the KSG will be no exception as this prototype grows into a production line product. Hopefully we’ll get one of these to shoot when they do go into production. The prototypes are sure exciting and I can’t wait to shoot it. MSRP is planned at $880.

      your local gun dealer.

When I shoot, I shoot heavy. I load my own shot shells and prefer “0” buck with 20 pellets, “00” buck with 15 pellets & #4 buck with 40 or so pellets. I don’t shot them every time I go out but do have them on hand. I wrote Kel-Tec and asked if they would consider building into their stock a recoil reducing system. For Police & especially military use where you may have to run through 50 to 100 rounds of the new hevi shot #1 buck it would be a lot friendlier to the shooter if they had an integrated recoil system. The technician that I wrote said he would pass it on to R&D.
    After Market
I contacted the owner of Poly-Choke (adjustable choke) and he is working on a version to fit the new Kel-Tec.
I plan on adding the vented adjustable choke to my Kel-Tec as soon as I can get my hands on one this fall. Besides reducing recoil by 15% I can go from cylinder bore to x-full choke with a twist of the wrist. Some don’t like the looks of the Poly-Choke on a narrow barreled shotgun but the wide face of the new shotgun will make it look more formidable.
I have also contacted LimbSaver and they want me to send the measurements of the butt stock to see if their current line will fit the Kel-Tec

  • Davidio Flavio April 30, 2012, 2:19 pm

Kel Tec has left me vastly unimpressed with their products.

I am sending back three, yes, THREE, pistols, a P32, and two P3AT’s, all with the same trigger issue, all were my personal guns, all were low round counts before the failure, they informed me that the 380’s are “First Generation” and they will fix the problem, but, they no longer offer any services, such as refinishing on them, because they are technically, no longer made.

The finish on all three was horrible, requiring sending the 32 back for hard chroming, which is pitting and rusting now, and heavy paint, on the 380’s.

I owned, for one day, an RFB, and its ergonomics were so horrible, I flipped it for a profit.

You couldn’t sight down the rifle, because of the straight line profile, which, and this is going to have the same issue, even with high sights, its going to fly up and whack your face, which is probably why they don’t want 3″ magnum recoil, because it would be a jaw breaker.

Someone else mentioned laser sights? My thoughts exactly. It would make a great dedicated room sweeper, with an IR laser, and NV goggles, but for anything else?

I will probably buy one four years from now, when you can actually find one, though you can get one for about 1500 on the auction sites right now. And dealer cost is rumored to be less than 600 bucks, nice profit huh?

Ever hear of the idea of intentional scarcity? Like the McRib?

I started out a huge fan of KT, but their dismal production capabilities, and poor finished product, coupled with dubious reliability has made me rethink that fandom.

  • Larry Hamm3r April 19, 2012, 2:07 pm

$880 for such a fine weapons….a grand or so with rails. Who would guess that Keltec would make something I wants.

  • kemetstry April 13, 2012, 12:59 am

I am highly disappointed in the final product. Initially it was stated it would shoot any shotgun ammo, including mixed. Now it’s primarily a standard 12-gauge. I think it’s over priced. Especially, for all the now false hype that was put out about this weapon

  • Erik, Olympia Wa. March 5, 2012, 11:56 am

I wonder how long before they make it so it feeds 3 inch ammo from the tubes.
They could call it the Bull-Dog Tactical Magnum Shotgun.
I could live with a 20 inch barrel.

    • Administrator March 5, 2012, 12:03 pm

It does feed 3″ you just get one less.

  • C Young February 9, 2012, 9:05 am

The lower rail of the forend where a foregrip is recommended is PLASTIC unlike the upper rail which is metal. Within the first 10 shots using a sig sauer stoplight foregrip, the lower rail shattered, fragmented, and broke off. Very very disappointed. Otherwise, the gun shoots great.

  • noel p. mellen November 2, 2011, 12:15 pm

I made an error on the measurement of the short shotshell. The headstamp reads Swarklip 12. I ‘m a little rusty on my africans but I believe that would translate to black tip. the crimp plug reads SSG. the measurement is 1 7/8″ which may not run in the new Kel Tech. If it could be modified that would translate to 21 rounds in one weapon. Mr. Conner would be pleased! It goes without saying I would also.

  • noel p. mellen November 1, 2011, 9:01 pm

Mr. Conner is correct about one thing: there is never enough ammunition. You can go without water for about three days and food a little longer but run out of ammo: no way. I also think he was referring to the Patrick Ferguson rifle in the revolution. It was the only decent breach loading weapon of its time. It was used in battle once in New Jersey and the brass ordered them seized and stored. He would die at King’s Mountain without a rifle to his units name. South Africa has made many quasi military shotguns including the original “Street sweeper” which had a 24 round mag. I have another that is not unlike a pump Uzi. It uses the hand finds hand magazine to pistol grip system and fires a slightly less than 2.5″ load that is buck and ball and seems to be more powerful and better ranging than any 2.75″ round. I’ve been told that the new Kel tech will use them which would make it a 16 + 1 weapon. This is however not the Aguila (Mexican) round which is far less powerful. As to the party that stated we were making Ratels in the good old USA he needs to learn a lot more about the SA armaments industry. We copied the Buffel, the Bulldogs and the Casspirs as well as other 20 to 30 year old SA technology. We manufacture four types from two companies right here in Charleston, SC. Force Protection is the bigger company. These costly IED resistant vehicles will be out of inventory soon. All they are is battle Taxis and are almost useless as fighting platforms. Still they claim no one has been killed in one of their vehicles when hit by mines or IEDs.

  • Josh November 1, 2011, 1:11 am

I agree, as I have also been under fire.like everybody and there brother has claimed lately.Cap can be gold. But not at the cost of a sizzling barrel. Or difficulty in switching tubes, and firing another large load. I’ll stic to my 877 rem for civ home use. As it has performed beautifully on the range with 8 mix and match shells, on any given day. I’ll take reliable performance and accuracy at 200 ft. Anyday, over a larger cap. And a red hot barrel. Than again, that’s my observation left and right. At others. Would love to hear an opinion on the gun, from an owner. But don’t care for the dicksmokers who seem to jump in to offer an op. Cause they were banned. From watching r rated movies by mom and dad. Seems to happen alot in this column.

  • Ronin877 October 16, 2011, 2:58 pm

This innovative design is pretty revolutionary. It will give me extra punch when I do a raid. It’s compact and has enough capacity for CQB work.

The only damned problem is that no has one…I just want to use it for work and willing to pay for it out of my own pocket but no one has one for me to buy. What gives Kel Tech? Do you want to sell them or not?

  • Paul Collins August 9, 2011, 4:31 pm

I really like the KEL-TEC shotgun and think it will be a big hit, but I do not like the smooth bore barrel. I would like to see KEL-TEC make the barrel about two inches longer and attach a ajustable poly choke on the gun. It would give the operator a lot more differant useages for the gun. You could even take it hunting after you made plugs for the magazine tubes to reduce the number of rounds it holds. I think it will be a great gun. I might try to get me one. Great job KEL-TEC!

  • Dundee August 5, 2011, 8:49 pm

Should be cali legal. its 2 internal mags that are a 7 rnd capacity so that doesn’t neccessarily exceed 10 rnd. Should comply with the laws

  • Brookin July 17, 2011, 3:35 pm

    Hi all,

I live here in California, does anyone have any updated info. on Kel-Tec’s KSG Shotgun, mainly if it will be California Legal, at first I had read on many blogs and forums form that this Bullpup Pump-Action Shotgun would indeed be Cali. Legal, but this was back in February of this year (2011) and you all know how anti-gun nuts love to get politicians (especially here in California) to pass anti-Firearms Legislation.
A friend of mine mentioned to me that just recently the California DOJ/Politicians passed some type of Legislation that would not make the Kel-Tec KSG California Legal to own.
While my friend is a good guy, he doesn’t always have his facts straight & he tends to think he knows everything.
So, if anybody can verify this please let me know…because I’ve been dreaming of owning this Bullpup Pump-Action Shotgun.

  • Ray July 6, 2011, 10:36 am

My concern with the front vertical grip would be twisting the action bars if not designed properly. I’ve seen that happen on 870’s & Mossbergs 500. Also in General terms shotguns have somewhat heavy trigger pulls, but Bull-pups, even in rifles are heavier by design. I’m wondering how this Bull-pup design will affect this shotguns trigger. Taking all into consideration, if made available I more that likely will buy one. I’m curies to see how the reaction from the feds will be. I realize its within legal spec, however to them it doesn’t make much difference as we have seen in the past. Good luck Kel-Tec, think you have a winner. I’ll be waiting…

  • nurl May 16, 2011, 3:06 pm

if you don’t want the weight of 14 shells for home defense then……. don’t load 14 shells.

  • one is none April 30, 2011, 6:14 pm

Finally something short and sweet for entry. A number of entry teams have been creating there own versions of an entry gun. Now finally a version that needs nothing extra. Kel-Tec has stepped up and in my opinion have delivered top notch entry weapon. Now I do agree with Teryl. Finish processing previous orders before taking on another challenge, your companies name is everything, if you cannot fill orders in a timely manner, or hit deadlines you lose customers. If one person has a bad experience he shares that experience with everyone he encounters during the subject. Thus you will not see me pre-ordering anything. 900.00 for a shotgun i expect delivery as soon as possible and I do not believe I would get that from Kel-Tec.

  • JOE April 22, 2011, 5:40 pm

And by the way, this gun is designed for Close Quarter Combat, NOT SHOOTING DUCKS WITH STEEL SHOT. MAX POWER!!!!

  • JOE April 22, 2011, 5:34 pm

Bigger is better. Make it longer to load 7 rounds of 3 1/2 inch mags in each tube (semi-auto)

  • aalek April 19, 2011, 2:38 am

From the video that i saw i think this shotgun is cool as hell. however i think there are a few small issues that raised my eyebrows about this shot gun. 1. There seemed to be an ejection issue with fired shells the slide had to be racked extra hard to get a few out but it worked pretty well. 2. I also noticed that there was a loading issue after all the rounds were fired the reloading process looked a little tricky and time consuming; bottom line with this one is in my opinion don’t run out of ammo unless you have a pistol. 3.the slide and the safty are kind of close in proximity to one another and it was said in the video that “the slide could break a finger if it was in the wrong place”. 4. It is too bad that it isn’t made in semi auto!
over all kel tec has some issues but i think that the gun is very cool and is worth getting. on that i would have the chamber looked over by a competent gun smith because of the sticking of the shells during extraction but i would still get it.

  • Brad March 27, 2011, 4:26 am

Andre, The trigger issue has been fixed. Kel-Tec took notes from the convention and are taking care of the concerns before the shotuns are released. Go to Kel-Tec’s web site and check out the new videos. I own 3 Kel-Tecs: P-3AT, Sub2000(40 cal) and a SU-16CA. I cant wait to add this shotgun to my collection.

  • BooYar March 23, 2011, 12:00 pm

You dont need 3″ mags… first of all, the recoil is horrible on the 3″ shells, followup shots are all but impossible, and your only advantage is 3 more 00 pellets, at a lower muzzle velocity. 2 3/4″ 12-pellet 00BK magnums are more than sufficient and offer superior velocity, and increased magazine capacity. Most LE types and military are opting for low-recoil shells these days with 8-pellet count.

3″ mags came out of the steel-shot waterfowl era, when 2 3/4″ shells were tapped to capcity with steel shot becuase it was considerably less dense and you had to go UP 2 or 3 shot sizes to get the same range and knockdown as lead. This is NOT SO with traditional lead shot. 3″ and 3.5″ shells are nothing but a by-gone novelty of steel shot; give me 15 rounds of 2 3/4″ anyday over 13 rounds of 3″ in this gun ANY DAY.

@Jon – the KSG is made here in America, not imported. So what does that ATF study have to do with anything?

@Ben – what specifically is written in the New Jersey law that would make this shotgun illegal? I know that NJ has a 15 round magazine capacity, but on the KSG you have a max of 14, even if was considered a single magazine and not two different 7 round mags that are switch selectable.

  • chuck byrd in mrytle beach sc March 12, 2011, 1:08 am

I CERTAINLY WILL HAVE ONE, COME HELL OR HIGH WATER.

  • Ben March 3, 2011, 1:44 am

This certainly won’t be legal in New Jersey. Yet the mall-ninja crowd here is already salivating to own one. So what will they get, a diminished version of the original? I fail to grasp that concept of need based on how the bullpup is equipped. I’ll wager it won’t be long before some neophyte will remove part of his forward hand when he slips it too far forward off the forearm and covers the muzzle. Guaranteed that Attorney General Paula Dow will add this to the list of banned assault weapons. America is not in New Jersey.

  • Doc February 25, 2011, 10:37 pm

The rep made a point to say that it won’t load the shorter rounds. I think he’s talking about the Aguila minis. 1 3/4″ height 12 gauge rounds in bird, buck, and slug. Mostly for novice users of single or side by side shotguns. But can you imagine one tube of 11 slug rounds and one tube of 11 buck? 22+1 in a single carry platform. Still a nice weapon!

    • dave July 6, 2011, 12:00 pm

I think a semi-auto version that would feed standard and shorty (Aquila mini) shells would be a true homerun for KT. I have long believed the shorty rounds have a great potential for home defense use. The reduced recoil of the shorty’s plus the softer shooting semi-auto with the added bonus of plenty of available firepower would make a great weapon for smaller/older/weaker shooters or folks with physical limitations. KT are you listening??

After looking at NS-2000 & Kel Tec schematics, the only thing that they have in common is that they’re
Pump Bull-pup Shotguns. Appears to me to have different internal opperating systems. NS-2000 is heavier
by almost 2lbs & has a more complex system. (More stuff to break, ie;Murphy’s Law.) I think Kec-Tec
will have a winner with the KSG, if they can meet supply. (Kel Tec always seems to have supply problems
with they’re more popular firearms, PF-9, PMR-30, Sub-2000’s,etc.) So if you want a KSG order now and
you might get it a year down the road, if your lucky. Next they need to make a KSG in semi auto version.

    • hellionb February 23, 2011, 3:55 am

The lever was switched after he chambered the second round. The fourth pump in the sequence ejects the second shell and loads the third from the second magazine.

One of the most important issues is knowing your weapon and training, training, training! I don’t know if any of the comments were made by law enforcment officrs or trained military personel. I have drawn my weapon countless times and fortunaly never had to use it. Bullpup designs have been adopted by very few countries for military purpose. Try and fire a 3 inch round in the middle of the night, total darkness, and half awake – do you think you can be efficient? in addition most gun fights at point blank range and 2.7 rounds are fired (not my statistics) Why would any one need 14 rounds of fire power? Athough we were issued an 870 if you believe a pump is faster than an autoloader you are wrong. One major problem with an 870 is to be careful not to short strock it – it will jam almost every time. One weapon not mentionted is an Ithaca Model 37 which does not have a trigger disconnector and can be fired by holding the trigger down and pumping the slide. Boys love toys but be practical on your selection!

    • Derek May 28, 2011, 11:57 am

Most gunfights are at 15 yards or less and only last a few seconds, not “point blank range”…but I guess that depends on your definition of point blank range. If you go to the range regularly and train (shooting 50 rounds and trying to get a good group is not training), it is not hard to fire a weapon “in the middle of the night, total darkness, and half awake.” That’s a “nightmare” situation anyway, and happens less than CCW/self defense marketers would like you to think. Most criminals prefer to avoid confrontation and will break in when your not home, like in the middle of the afternoon before you get out of work, the kids are still in school, and the spouse has gone shopping…not the middle of the night. Still, it is one you should train for…

Why would someone need 14 rounds? Why would someone need 2 rounds? Why would someone need 7 rounds? Are there any police or military that only carry one magazine of ammo because they don’t “need” the extras? I didn’t think so. Now, if someone broke into your home and you filled them with 14 rounds, that would be an issue the police would address with you. At any rate, this weapon allows you to carry UP TO 14 rounds, if you so desire.

I want to know how I can buy Two of the Kel-Tec KSG 14-1 Pump Bull Shotgun?

  • Chuck January 23, 2011, 4:55 pm

I think I would love this gun…. But if I need 9 rounds in a fire fight the last thing I want to do is take my eyes off the target to hit the mag switch, they need a auto select option to switch over to the other mag tube. Just a thought… And yeah it’s legal in the Peoples Republic of CA until a elected democrat sees it and then it will be band just like the BMG, I’m sure some criminal will have it in LA though….

    • Will January 31, 2011, 11:20 pm

Think of it this way. If you need 9 rounds in a fire fight, you would normally have to “take your eyes off the target” to reload. With the kel-tec, you only have to take your eyes off the target to flip a switch. Or not even then if you’ve trained enough to do it without looking.

    • corbin February 15, 2011, 2:00 am

actually its super simple think of a ar15 selector but side ways in the mag area. prolly could do it with your thumb if you were practiced enough

  • Scott January 23, 2011, 4:27 pm

I was really exited about this when I first heard it was coming. Went to my dealer to get on the list. Then I start hearing about the trigger issue. I’m staying on the list for now in hopes they get this problem fixed befors release. If it isn’t then I’ll just stay with my 870. Under the presure of using this in a high stress situation having to remember to release the trigger before cycling the action is not the best.

  • outdoorsman January 22, 2011, 11:42 pm

Looks like a great gun. Can I pre order one now.

  • Andre January 22, 2011, 4:56 pm

Some may not like the fact that if you hold the trigger back and rack the slide the trigger won’t reset. In order to remedy that you would have to release the trigger and rack the slide, ejecting the unfired round in the chamber. http://gunnuts.net/2011/01/20/kel-tec-ksg-shotgun-video/

    • Mitch July 29, 2011, 3:18 pm

Kel-Tec has addressed this issue in the production model. They also redesigned the action release lever, which used to force you to put your finger up on the front fo the trigger guard behind the slide, risking pinching it. They created a butterfly release that is still on the trigger guard (ambidexterous), but a little bit lower down so it’s not so perilous. They also put cuts in the sides of the magazine tubes so you can see how much ammo you have left. A company of any type that listens to it’s customers is rare; a weapons manufacturer even more so. Kel-Tec hooked me with the SU-16C and I can’t wait to get my hands on one of these.

The People’s Republic of California will never tolerate the concept, As long as the Wacko Element continues to allow the Crazies to to inflict their form of Social Reform on Polite Society. Law Enforcement can use whatever improvements the industry can provide, but the civilian market can pound sand until they vote the apologists out of office. Restore Personal Responsibility! Restore Citizens Rights. Enforce the Will of the People to Execute Capitol Criminals after a Reasonable period of appeal (say, 5 yrs. Max!). Impose a 10 year Minimum sentence (No Plea Barganing it away, Absolutely No Sentence Reduction allowed!) for the use of a firearm while committing a Felony, to be served before the imposition of any sentencing for that Felony. No time off for “Good Behavior”(that’s what is to be Expected from EVERYONE) rather, More Time for less than Exemplery Behavior……….Sorry, got carried away! An attack of Common Sense! Punish the Guilty? Absurd!

    • Niklos January 28, 2011, 6:54 am

Ya’ had me until maximum sentancing…That’s what a Judge and Jury are for and every case is different…Again we see the brilliance of a Judge and Jury system. Not perfect but better than the rest.

  • mick martin January 22, 2011, 5:00 am

a bilt on factory compensator has to be a must for this gun………..too uncontrolable without it

  • Morgan January 22, 2011, 4:56 am

    That is one sexy shotty…

  • outdoorsman January 22, 2011, 1:41 am

Cant wait to order mine want to preorder one now.

  • F D Mccarty January 21, 2011, 7:33 pm

KelTec has some interesting ideas but would like to even see a pmr 30 can only dream of Them making a rifle version of the PMR 30. Still waiting still excited still waiting.!!!!!

  • Joshua January 21, 2011, 1:42 pm

Can this shotgun be plugged for deer hunting???

    • Administrator January 21, 2011, 4:13 pm

I’m sure you could make your own plug for it with a large dowel that you insert on disassembly, but I doubt it would be supported as a deer gun.

      • mick martin January 22, 2011, 5:08 am

be great and probably legal for wild pig and coyote

        • Matt March 18, 2012, 10:15 am

We have a problem with boar up here in the mountains. This shotgun would do good for the hunt. Especially when a 400 pound boar starts running for you.

  • Burt January 21, 2011, 9:42 am

I want one when the autoloader comes out. OHYEABABY

    • Tom Belvin January 23, 2011, 1:03 am

Whats with the desire for an auto, once you get used to a pump they are just as fast and you don’t have to have a round chambered if you don’t need it.

      • Matt March 18, 2012, 10:12 am

I couldn’t agree more. Showed my wife this shotgun and she even liked it. Ordering one asap.

  • Mike Washburn January 21, 2011, 7:29 am

Well, first of all, without any “drop at the comb” the shooter will have to hunker down to aim in the usual fashion. Notice that is what the salesman on the video did. This is best as a laser pointer weapon which is just fine until the batteries give out.
But you can’t help like the innovative look. So don’t stop……make a semi auto model, make the ammo tubes auto switch-over otherwise it just isn’t going to be better than a good ‘ole 870.

    • Niklos January 28, 2011, 6:47 am

With respect, one can not reload an 870 as fast as simply flipping a switch. Also two 870’s weight far more than one magazine and a bit more material to conect it all together.Sights can be raised to acomidate the shooter’s preference.

  • elijah January 21, 2011, 4:24 am

great shotgun looks great i will be buying one for sure.

  • Tex the Texan January 21, 2011, 4:14 am

Wonder when the ATF is going to rule all the “Bullpups” illegal unless registered and re-word the 18″ barrel thing?? Or do you think that would take an act of Congress…………….or do you think the BATF already has that power with their interpretaion powers???

Very nice Bullpup shotgun by the way…..should go nicely with a FNH-PS90 and a MSAR-STG556 🙂

  • Flak January 21, 2011, 3:52 am

Dan, the problem with rock salt and buckshot in the same weapon is confusion under stress.

  • Flak January 21, 2011, 3:46 am

I suspect this “bullpup” will be placed on the assault weapon list regardless of barrel length.

  • Norm January 21, 2011, 3:37 am

Not bad. Make one that works with 3″ Mag shells and I’m sold.

    • Niklos January 28, 2011, 6:35 am

2nd that motion…3″ shells that feed out of the magazines!

Tho’ I wonder if it is a design limitation.Remember the comment about the use of shorter shells?Perhaps the difference in length is too great for it to work reliably if it were made to feed 3″ and then one feed it 2 3/4″…

I have set aside funds for one.Thinking of two, should the first prove worthy.

  • Matt January 21, 2011, 2:58 am

Looks alot like the fabled nested basic design. Glad they built this, hopefully it does well

  • Teryl January 21, 2011, 2:39 am

Whoop de doo!!! I’m still waiting to get my hands on the RFB that I have had on order for over nine months. Why don’t they fill their backorders before producing another gun that will not get out to the little dealers?

  • Dave Barrett January 21, 2011, 2:34 am

Let me know when the semi- auto – version comes out.

  • TROY January 21, 2011, 2:04 am

IS THE SHOT GUN CALIFORNIA LEGAL FOR CIVILIAN?

    • Matt February 6, 2011, 8:51 am

Yes, it is. As others have stated, its a pump so the pistol grip is good to go. The only other law that could apply here is the cali limit on fixed magazines for shotguns, which is 10 rounds max. Fortunately for us, this shotgun only has a 7 round magazine capacity…it just has 2 of them! So the short answer is yes, it is 100% compliant with the current cali gun laws. Turners is socal is taking pre orders now (I am in no way affiliated with turners, just letting people know where they can get one). This should also put some at ease with regard to legality, as Turners is notoriously careful about what they decide to selll. They just relatively recently started selling off list black rifles with bullet buttons, and I’ve yet to see a bullet botton’d Saiga shotgun.

  • SFC Jimmy W. Simmons, US Army, Retired January 21, 2011, 1:23 am

    How much?
    Where can I get one?
I think I made a little mess in my drawers!
I WILL have one of these things!

  • Jake January 21, 2011, 12:35 am

Im a Benelli m4 tactical guy myself, However this is a unique system.
2 magazines 14+1 bullpup? Short CQB setup. Not bad at all. But like the guy said before me,
Semi-auto? Then try to keep up with all the orders coming in. ((Me first))

  • brian January 21, 2011, 12:29 am

thats cool I got to get one, when will they be available for sale?

  • MIKE January 20, 2011, 11:25 pm

FOR THAT KINDA MONEY SHOULD ALREADY HAVE SIGHTS AND FORWARD HANDLE

    • corbin February 15, 2011, 1:59 am

they said factory msrp. street price would bee 600

  • Tim January 20, 2011, 10:44 pm

One market I can see this would be designed for is 3-gun competition which I have been competing in for over 2 years and is becoming very popular.

    • Gregg July 29, 2011, 9:49 pm

I can see this use as the standard shotgun for the Border Patrol

  • John January 20, 2011, 9:53 pm

Can the Kel-Tec KSG 14 + 1 Pump Bull-Pup Tactical Shotgun accept a longer barrel? Are longer barrels available? Are Stainless Steel Barrels available?

  • Steve January 20, 2011, 9:14 pm

Kevin, that defeats the purpose of the shotgun. There are plenty of other models that satisfy your listed requirements. Most uses of this would have the operator carrying the required amount of ammo anyway, might as well be where it needs to be.

I think this is something worthy of a reward for innovation.

  • Hottuit January 20, 2011, 8:47 pm

Will this be sold on California.

    • Steve 1954 January 30, 2011, 7:38 pm

It’s pump action, so the pistol and fore grip addition are legal (for now). Semi auto would be a no-no because of the evil, fear inducing “pistol grip” design.

    • corbin February 15, 2011, 1:56 am

dude. cali legal. yes. i heard this has a selector switch between the two magazines. amazing. ive seen vids of it shot. rediculous. but because the actions behind the handle its legal everywhere. think of this put in a pack for backpacking. wow what an amazing lil shotgun this is no doubt cant wait

  • Dan January 20, 2011, 7:48 pm

This looks great , I just wish that Australian gun laws were not soo strict *Aussie shooter here*

Kevin posted “1.) Offer this gun with a single tube for home defense duty.
I really don’t need 14 rounds (and the associated weight) in a home defense shotgun. 7 rounds of 00Buck is fine with me.”

From what I saw with the tube selector , why not have 7 rounds of rock salt loaded shells and 7 rounds of 00Buck ?

  • Cecil Young January 20, 2011, 7:32 pm

Sirs, No foolin, I’d give my eye teeth, ( oop’s, I mean my J C Penny teeth ) to put one of these against my shoulder. Where can I sign up to buy one as soon as possible. ( I’d prefer one in semi-auto if they decide to go in that direction.) P.S. imagine how great this would be as a backup gun for bear guides.

  • Robert January 20, 2011, 7:23 pm

Looks like a solid design, just as solid as the same design when it was called the Winter Swatriplex. Though that gun had twin 9 round tubes so it was undoubtedly a bit longer than the Kel-Tec.

The Winter never reached full production that I know of though, so it’s nice to see someone either borrowed heavily from that design or two different design teams reached similar conclusions (think pyramids in Egypt and Central America).

    Kudos for now Kel-Tec!

    • Tim January 21, 2011, 2:57 am

      RE: Rhino

The Chiappa Rhino’s are neat revolvers but they aren’t new wither! The Italian Mateba’s used the same setup. May have been others as well. IIRC when I talked to the folks at Rhino at SHOT last year the Mateba designer may have had a part on the Rhino as well. Not sure when the Mateba first came out. Maybe in the 80’s?

  • Les Center January 20, 2011, 7:10 pm

Just responding to the point about there was no new innovations other than Glock. Have a look at the Rhino .357 by Chiappa Arms, a more innovative design you couldn’t ask for. Firing from the bottom of the cylinder no less.

    • Richard Zentz January 21, 2011, 1:37 am

Les…this is not a “new’ design, the Webley (60+ years) ago made a model that was exactly the same.

    • Ryan August 4, 2011, 12:12 pm

Mateba. Rhino is no where near new.

  • Monte January 20, 2011, 6:43 pm

    I want one! Where do I pre-order?

  • Bob Long January 20, 2011, 6:31 pm

I WANT ONE! no, TWO!!!!! thought my mossberg with extended tube was good at 7+1, but this, WOW!

  • Kevin January 20, 2011, 6:18 pm

I’ve been watching this shottie for awhile now and I plan to be one of the “early adopters”.
    Where do I pre-order?

I do have a couple of items for KelTech to add to their ‘sticky notes’ in their development lab.

1.) Offer this gun with a single tube for home defense duty.
I really don’t need 14 rounds (and the associated weight) in a home defense shotgun. 7 rounds of 00Buck is fine with me.
    2.) How about a semi-auto model? 🙂

    • Logan January 22, 2011, 12:45 am

Just because it can hold 14 rounds doesn’t mean you have to load them all if you don’t want the weight. I doubt one tube loaded would lopside its balance enough to notice.

    • Donald Conner January 26, 2011, 2:39 am

I don’t think you should be so certain you won’t be need more than the rounds you have. If those are enough, why spend money on another gun/ “Streetus animalus” is known to home invade in groups of 5 and more. You can’t necesssarily count on every round being fatal. Kinda like money: better “too much” (if there is such a thing as too much money) than too litte (which I have experienced numerous times, and found not to my liking). You may be a 3-gun Master for all I know, but when the shit really comes down and somwbody is trying to kill YOU, you’ll want all the ammo you can get and then some.
The gun games are fun, but if you’ve ever been under real fire, you know damn well there ain’t enough ammo in all of China to throw back.

      • TTaunton January 27, 2011, 7:19 pm

To each his own, but I like to use a quote from “Unforgiven” which goes something like “I just don’t want to die for lack of shoot’n back”

      • Lavonna March 4, 2011, 5:28 pm

I like the way you think! I, also experienced in the “not enough” mode, would rather be over prepared than under… just sayin’!

      • Paul April 30, 2011, 11:36 am

As with anything – be prepared. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

      • Sennanchie October 30, 2011, 5:19 pm

I couldn’t have said it better myself. You can never have too many rounds for a shtf scenario or a similar bad situation where a group of armed crazies want to slice your head off and feed it to you on the end of their mounted bayonets. A lot of people say they don’t care for a capacity of more than 4 or 5 buckshots or slugs, but I like the idea of the “fully insured” policy myself.

      • Robert August 13, 2013, 12:15 am

Add another barrel. Double barrel kel tech would be ruthless and insane. It could happen

    • Niklos January 28, 2011, 6:38 am

Modify a Browning…Bottom feed, bottom eject and single tube.Would not even be that difficult to do.

    • CorporalofMarines September 17, 2011, 5:19 am

Had an instructor long ago tell me that there are never too many good looking women on a beach and that there is never ENOUGH ammo in a fire fight. Put 14 in the tubes and ONE in the pipe.

      • PadreBlue March 5, 2012, 9:14 pm

Corp; we may have had the same instructor!- I’ll take the 14+1 AND a belt loaded around my shoulder or waist: things come off a ‘dead run’ pace, it is time to stuff some more in!!! Might have to grab a one hand piece[Sig220/1911A/Glock30 in .45ACP… NEVER too much ammo when it all goes south:-( My plan is to be able to sit down when it is over and hold my family close, and be glad that my range work paid off! And Bob~ having two, one for me and one for her is a real idea! Maybe the baddies will decide they really didn’t mean to call at our place afterall:-)

  • Fred January 20, 2011, 5:58 pm

I’m going to Pre-order mine ASAP!!!

  • caleb January 20, 2011, 3:50 pm

That thing should be called the Kel-Tec OMGWTF. I really like it, and I think most bull-pups I’ve seen are a little goofy (and look like they only belong in 80’s action movies). That thing looks great and seems to be well thought out. I’d like to hold one, but damn, I think I want it.

  • William Wilkes January 20, 2011, 3:01 pm

Would like to know about all Kel-Tec products. Can the new shotgun be preordered? Thanks.

    • Rich June 21, 2011, 12:50 pm

“Can the new shotgun be preordered?”

I have had a pre-order for the KSG shotgun on file with “TGSCOM.com” since Feb. of this year. The price quoted, AT THAT TIME, was $673.99, but I have noticed that their price has dropped several times since then. I’m not worried until they confirm that the gun is ready to ship and what the final price will be. Check them out and see if they are still taking pre-orders.

  • Tim January 20, 2011, 12:04 pm

Kel-Tec did do a great job with this one and its a thoroughly modern looking design. Not entirely original though. Its a concept pioneered by the South African Neostead shotgun a number of years back. It’d be interesting to find out if indeed it is an upgraded Neostead, or if that was simply the inspiration for this design.

    • Ari January 21, 2011, 7:32 am

How right you are Tim. It sure does look like an updated Neostead.

    • Digital Boy January 22, 2011, 9:57 am

Tim, the KSG only bears a faintly passing resemblance to the NeoStead 2000.
First, the tube magazines must be manually switched, or else you run dry after 7+1 shots. The NS-2000 can be set to alternate feed from either magazine.
Second, the NS-2000s action has a tilting barrel, and the pump works in the reverse of the traditional fashion, i.e. you rack the pump forward to eject the empty, then back towards the firing hand to return to battery and fire on the NS-2000.

I’d say that any resemblance to the NS-2000 is accidental. Though if they want to license a design from some other manufacturer that hasn’t been able to obtain clearance from BATFE and our elected overlords, I’d love to see a Tavor from them. 😀

      • Kanine1134 July 10, 2011, 7:27 pm

Indeed, the only similarity between the Neostead and the KSG is that they are both bullpup, other than that they are compleatly unrelated. And, Hell Yeah would I like to see a Tavor from Kel-Tec, if they could offer it in 6.5 Grendal…….

    • Donald Conner January 26, 2011, 2:53 am

Now there is something I never read or heard about. During the South African troubles, the SA’s invented what they called “the Ratel:, a v-shaped hull for combat vehicles, and now lo and behold Uncle Sam has “invented “the same thing. Sometimes things are too far ahead of their times. The Snyder Rifle, invented by a Scotchman around the time of our Reolutionary War is another. It was accurate out to 600 or 700 yards, but the stiff-necked upper class officers of the British Army wouldn’t hear of it. It’s a damn good thing they stuck with their muskets. And that our “irregulars” (not the Continental Armey) had PennsIvania Long Rifles. If all the troops we had to fight against had had the Snyder, we’d have an English Jack flying in the streets in stead of the Stars and Stripes. Look how long it took our Army to get rid of the .45-70 and .38 Long Colt. Marines were still using 1903 Springfields in WW2. And now we’re still dicking around with the M4 when a 7.62×51 is called for-longer ranges, better cover, etc. for the ragheads makes it imperative to have a round that slams them down at any range out to 800 yards. Glad you brought this forward. Goes to show there’s “nothing new under the sun”. Nice job.

      • Jack Schoch September 18, 2011, 5:48 pm

Don, I was reading your comment and noticed ONE somewhat LARGE mistake. There is no such thing as a “Scotchman”. As I told once by a “Scottish” friend of mine, “Scotch is something you drink. Only the “Bloody British” call us Scotchmen.

      • John March 27, 2012, 7:13 pm

The M4 is a good frame and is available in several calibers. If you want to reach out and touch someone go for the M4 in the 338 lapua like i did. 800 yards, no problem at all.

Send this to a friend
