Meet the New Glock Gen4 Summer Collection - NRA 2017

The Glock 19 Gen4 Summer Collection.

Good news, bad news.  First the bad news, no information on the Gen5.

“Any word on the Gen5,” I asked the employee at the Glock booth during NRA 2017.

“That’s just internet stories,” he said.

Ah, so mum is the word on Gen5 Glocks, at least for the time being.  Now, for the good news, Glock is releasing some enhanced Gen4s for the summer that will be available starting June 1, 2017 for just a few bucks more than the standard Gen4.

The improvements on the G17 and G19 model include front serrations, steel sights, and extended controls.

I definitely like the symmetrical look of having both front and rear serrations.

“GLOCK strives to provide perfection in all of our products and these special production pistols provide additional enhancements,” stated Bob Radecki, National Sales Manager at GLOCK in a press release obtained by GunsAmerica.

“The front serrations and extended controls make it easier to conduct handgun press checks and enable faster disassembly and easier manipulation of the slide” added Radecki.

Nice and easy to see.

From my standpoint, the addition of the front slide serrations was more a cosmetic improvement than a functional one. I’ve never had a problem handling a Glock sans front serrations.  The overall look of the gun is more symmetrical with front and rear serrations, though, which I find visually appealing.

The extended controls, the larger mag release and the slide catch, did make a difference.  A small one, but it was detectable going from an old Gen4 to the new Summer Gen4 at the booth.  In the field, would it really matter?  Probably not.

Lastly, the steel sights is a nice touch.  Obviously, they’ll improve durability in that department.

You can see the front slide serrations.

The controls stick out slightly more than on a traditional Gen4.

Overall, I respect what Glock is doing here.  It’s about the pursuit of perfection in pistol performance (say that 100x fast).  Improving every detail matters, regardless of whether it makes a substantive difference.

    I would love to have a 9mm chrome slide. Or a 45ruger

What I want to know is why Glock doesn’t produce a small light-weight pistol in .22LR to compete with Smith & Wesson, Ruger, Sig and others that make a small compact pistol for cheap plinking and practicing. Maybe something on the same slim frame as the 43 or 36. And if you really want to fulfill my Christmas wish list give it a threaded barrel!

Maybe if enough Glock fans would bombard the company with emails showing interest they’ll do it!

Front serrations, steel sights and extended controls! Wow Glock you have now come to extend almost the same level of pistol controls and craftsmanship as my 2004 Springfield XD. I say almost because the 13 year old Springfield still has you beat with ambidextrous and Metal magazine release, better and lighter trigger and higher quality polishes magazines that’s slide out of the pistol easily when unloaded. It would be nice if Glock would actually add controls that people doing in the aftermarket like Advanced stippling, better triggers, automatic slide-cuts, better barrels, exedra.. Glock is ok, but about to the level of innovation as a 2003-2004 year of pistol… And honestly Glock if you’re going to make metal sites at least make a better sight picture get a clue nobody likes that crappy sight picture you have

      Exedra…..?
Wow. This guys a genius. With a firearm. Scary.

What sells Glocks is their reliability, finish, best magazines out there, interchangeable front and rear sights. Glock also have a lot of government agencies on board with them and a large consumer base. Holsters and aftermarket items is full of buyer decisions which is good. This is why I made my decision to go with glock. It’s some of the same reasons that made the 1911 platform so popular. Yep Iv got a 1911 too for the same reasons. Now I’d like to see glock in the 5.7 caliber.

Hey man don’t take this the wrong way because I also carry Glock sometimes and I think they’re pretty good pistols but you’re wrong about a couple things. Best magazines? I’m sorry but I’m going to disagree with you there. The polymer coating on the magazines can make them stick when injecting, this has happened to me several times. Interchangeable front and rear sights? I don’t know what you’re talking about there because you cannot put a front sight on a rear sight for a Glock or any other pistol that I know for that matter. I assume you mean you can remove and replace both the front and rear sight with after-market sights. And again not to nitpick but Glock changed their finish many years ago and the new finish is crappppp to say the least. The last two glocks I bought, had finish-wear just by holstering in unholstering the weapon a few times. Again not to rag on what you’re saying and I do agree they are reliable and as I said I’ve owned many but just setting the record straight.

The people at Glock are not bright! Front serrations, to make it easier to press check? And easier to blow the tip off a finger!!!
Hold pistol in shooting hand, run thumb of other hand down right side of pistol, the bloody extractor sticks out, sitting on cartridge in chamber!!! You can feel it, you have no need to risk an accident. You can look at it if you want, you can even see the cartridge in the chamber!
And the other stupid mistake, the lined trigger! That hurts your trigger finger. I like the finger groves. The bigger mag. release, good, just cut the bottom corner off, it digs into the second finger, snip, fixed.
Extended slide release, great. Good reason for front serrations, will wear the crap out of holsters? Hello.

    • John Bruce June 23, 2017, 7:00 pm

Many gun makers use front serrations. If you blow your finger off you shouldn’t be using a gun. How many people put their finger on the trigger when press checking? None that I know of.

Folks lets just face it Glock isn’t gonna stray to far off the mold on their designs of the Gmodels and ya know what I don’t blame em they got it so good the first time and have sold so many that the square utilitarian look is what says Glock. But wouldn’t it be cool if they offered a more refined model alongside their old faithfuls like a real refined trimmed slide and frame with same basic guts that proved so reliable in the G Models? Maybe even step into the rifle market some its not like they are too broke. C,mon Glock shake the gun world up again!

I love my Gen4 G29 mind ya it’s been updated with several additions to my taste . I have the lone wolf 6″ and 4″ ported barrels . Yea it’s sub compact —- some what — still a heavy chunk of gun but I have small hands . It goes with me everywhere while in the back country . I see several 10mm makers most are ummmm pretty — I did not purchase pretty I purchased reliability tough never fail hand gun I know I can defend myself from bear . I use only double tap ammo keep several clips with different loads ready . The G 19 is a much heavier firearm and if you can control the beast that’s great . As for the twist and uprise while firing adding a 3.2 pound trigger seems to me to help keep that under control plus the ported barrel does help some . Adding the 6″ barrel gives me legal hunting side arm as in our state 6″ is the shortest barrel length for hunting . Mind you I have my 45/70 also with me but I give a serinaro , you lean the riffle against whatever and surprised at a angry black bear charging you and your riffle is 30′ away 😳 , it happened to us 2 years ago and I did ready to stop her as her cub was real close to us the reason for her pissed off charge . One round in a oak tree stopped her dead in her tracks so no one got unnecessarily killed . The 10mm is a fantastic backcountry round and my G29 may not be pretty but again I don’t give one —- about pretty I buy for sound proven tough never fail security . Glock does that !

My two G-19s, do not have front serrations, for a reason, I despise them. I agree with Will Drider above, this just hype and little else. My gen 2, and Gen 3 19s, work just fine, thank you.

  • Will Drider April 30, 2017, 11:45 am

The “Summer Run” only applies to 9mm Gs. I like the upgrades but hold them in the same class of Gen 4 changes: not essential and not enough to inspire a purchase to replace older variants. Similar to gill style cuts and colors of the month I don’t bite gimmic bait. Many people swap out the plastic sights due to personal preferences but I never heard of a broken or worn out set. No doubt all the poly/striker competition is the reason for the special run which is probably a test of market demand for these changes. No mention if Glock has a different MSRP on these but the Dist/retailers will surely bump up the price.

I just want to let you know I replaced a worn out front sight on my g23 with steel sights. It was a police trade in so I suspect it was just holster wear.
