Mounts to any Picatinny rail system.

As of now, I have more questions than answers as it relates to the patent-pending Stinger.  Talking with ADI Co-Founder Mike Conti it’s clear that his team is still making decisions on what materials to use for the final production version.

The test sample at SHOT had an aluminum sleeve and a cheap blade steel.  That’s going to change when they roll them out in the Spring.  Mike said he’ll probably switch to a polymer-type sleeve over the aluminum.   Makes sense.  The polymer will help to lighten the load.  As for blade steel, he is looking at various high-performance and corrosion resistant options.  Something in the stainless variety, perhaps.

In terms of the overall length of the Stinger, that seems to be up in the air as well.  I’m assuming down the line they’ll probably make smaller versions as well.  But first things first is getting this first gen out the door.

Operationally, it’s simple.  The Stinger mounts to any Picatinny rail system.  The blade is deployed with the press of the button, which is positioned at the base of the sleeve.  This means that the Stinger works for both righties and lefties.  When the button is engaged, the user slides the blade forward via the handguard, sorta like pumping a shotgun.  The blade is locked into place until the button is pressed again.  Easy.

Dumbest product pitch man who has no clue of military tactics. Yeah Einstein we attach our“permanent bayonet” while we are riding around in vehicles.
You are the reason I hate going to those kind of shows 8 in 10 people Think they understand and like playing in body armor.

  • JAMES SINGER July 27, 2018, 10:08 pm

    Dumbest “accessory” yet this year.

  • Peter Brown June 1, 2018, 12:39 pm

$200 for a bayonet…baloney. Though I wouldn’t own an SKS, some or all had deployable bayonets.
Yes, the AR bayo would leave a mark but what’s the point? What does it weigh? Quick answer: Too much and few would care.

  • jake January 30, 2018, 11:08 am

from the size of the mounting system for this spike/baynet you would figure the blade would be longer. the housing seems quiet big ande would not be good in the field weight/size etc. my be good for the house

  • Mike January 30, 2018, 7:21 am

The AR was designed to be a 7 lb rifle you could carry all day yet people insist on turning them into 10 lb .556 rifles by hanging a lot of crap off of them. This certainly qualifies! A proper sight and a basic sling is all you really need!

  • Travis January 29, 2018, 5:53 pm

Would be WAY better off continuing to use ordinary STEEL in 1065 – 1095 range, NOT stainless; stainless next to useless for blades; can be greased for corrosion resistance; just a gadget.

  • Steven January 28, 2018, 9:26 am

    Extra weigh, bulky, looks stupid
A bayonet is used for other things like digging, cutting things etc. things this product won’t do. It will not catch on.
Obviously made by people how don’t have any formal training or experience.

  • Been There January 27, 2018, 9:12 am

Heck ja. Useful for spear fishing into a table aqaurium.

  • bobh January 27, 2018, 2:06 am

    I think there’s a typo here. They must mean $1.99 not $199.00.

  • Bob January 26, 2018, 8:19 pm

I want my chainsaw, dammit! Where’s my chainsaw? What if I told you that the channel was to lay a long piece of uncooked bacon in…would that make a difference?

  • DR. DAVE January 26, 2018, 4:07 pm

As I old my drill sergeant in 1965, “If I expend my 20 30round magazines and they are still coming, I am not going to stay around to fight them with a knife on the end of a stick.

  • loupgarous January 26, 2018, 1:41 am

Not useful unless there are ten folks in your household all the time, and each of you is fit and able to carry an AR so that you can all line up in front of a gang of scumbags on your property and on the command “Fix bayonets”, you all press the little button, the blades pop out, and you all charge the opposition.
    In other words, “not useful”.

    • DR. DAVE January 26, 2018, 3:55 pm

Bayonets haven’t been useful since armies fought with muzzleloaders! As I told my drill sergeant in 1965, “After I expend my 15 30-round magazine and they are still coming, I won’t stand there to fight with a knife on the end of a stick.”
My grandfather who fought in WWI told me that the most effective weapon for close combat is the entrenching tool (short shovel).

  • eric January 25, 2018, 11:48 pm

    Completely useless and ridiculous

  • Archangel January 25, 2018, 7:31 pm

They could have mounted that under/around the barrel and saved some space!

    • matthew martinez January 26, 2018, 1:47 am

my first thoughts when i saw this.

  • skr January 25, 2018, 6:43 pm

If I’m close enough to stab them, hell, I’d just shoot’em

  • Larry January 25, 2018, 6:33 pm

  • Bill the Cat January 25, 2018, 4:42 pm

bayonets other than flat blades, are proscribed by the Genève Convention, as the US is a signer of the Genève Convention, we are supposed to follow its rules.

    • Dave smith January 25, 2018, 8:57 pm

The Geneva convention has nothing to do with this what so ever it deals with treatment of p.o.w.s I think you mean The Hague conventions on warfare and arms

    • loupgarous January 25, 2018, 10:24 pm

That’s for the Armed Forces. Civilians get to shoot hollow points and do all sorts of things forbidden by the Hague and Geneva Conventions.

    • dave trowbridge January 25, 2018, 10:37 pm

Geneva Convention is 4 WAR materials.. not individual sporting or self defense in free states.

    • Oaf January 26, 2018, 1:50 am

Are you a signee of the Geneva Convention? Or maybe the Hague Convention which prohibits certain military armaments? If not, then it’s doesn’t apply to you unless you’re a member of the military of a country who did sign. Besides, it’s an urban legend that any type of bayonet is banned by either convention.

  • Douglas Riding January 25, 2018, 3:06 pm

Hey ! What’s with all the negative comments ???
Can’t you boys see the possibilities here ???

In Vietnam, we had ( real ) bayonets and we occasionally used ’em too !
You see, we’d have a guy stand outside the hooch door and try to stab the rats that we would chase out…
Sometimes, some guys, were good encough to score 100% ! Hell ! they shoulda got a medal !
We coulda hung ‘Rat Killin’ right under the Machine Gun and Hand Grenade qualification bars !

So – I say ‘bring-it-on’ ! There MUST be rats in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Mali ! I know a few personally, here in Sunny Southern Uah !!!

IT;S BETTER TO HAVE IT ON YOUR SIDE TO USE AT WILL ETHER ON YOUR 16 0R IN YOUR HAND, IT LOOKS COOL BUT NOT GOOD FOR COMBAT .LEON 25-2 INFANTRY

  • Russ January 25, 2018, 2:23 pm

With a price point of $199.00 they won’t sell many.

  • Oaf January 25, 2018, 2:00 pm

    Baaaahaaahahaaaaa……..’Merica,……just because!

  • Paul Ruffle January 25, 2018, 1:55 pm

That type of bayonet was obsolete half a century ago. Of course, the old ones weren’t retractable. I guess that’s the innovative part of the design. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ROFL! This just made my day as the most ridiculous, unnecessary, useless, overpriced, overweight accessory for an AR type rifle. Maybe it’s all just a joke, not a real product. Seriously, I can’t imagine anyone buying this thing.

    • Jeff January 25, 2018, 6:20 pm

The Springfield 1903 as originally built had a retractable spike bayonet. President Teddy Roosevelt took one look at it and said get rid of it. That was about 1904 or 1905. By 1906, the .30-03 was determined to be less effective than the ammunition being produced in Europe. So, the spike bayonet was deleted and the rifles were rechambered to the new spitzer bullet. This is what became the famous 1903 in .30-06.

      • bobh January 28, 2018, 9:53 am

The ’03 bayonet you’re thinking of was simply a reinforced pointed end of the cleaning rod. It was just as useless as the product in this article but at least it didn’t add as much extra weight.

  • willy January 25, 2018, 1:42 pm

Before long this will be the only legal setup available for AR’s in CA, CN, MA or MY.

  • Gary January 25, 2018, 12:49 pm

    What a ridiculously pointless product.

    • Doc Loch January 25, 2018, 1:16 pm

How can you say that? It definitely has a point!
I want to know about weight. It looks to be about 30 lbs.

  • Steve Warren January 25, 2018, 12:38 pm

He could barely keep a straight face during that demo. He knows how ridiculous that thing is!

  • Pedro January 25, 2018, 12:20 pm

Yes and about time…. exactly what I needed for my overfurnished AR15….. 30lbs of rail mounted stuff just doesn’t work well enough already.
Can I mount three of them…. left/right/bottom of my AR? and maybe a 4th one under one the rail of my buttstock? One just might not be enough for the hoards of post apocalyptic snowflake zombies.
Geewhiz mall ninja warriors unite and buy these en masse!!!!
Wouldn’t it sell better if it had Magpulled financial cast/engraved/painted all over it?
Stinger???? Why not call it wannabe Gangsta? Time for a cerakote repaint
Gotta run. Video games await 70hrs of my free weekly time and can’t miss the video game addiction that causes me to buy all those useless products.

  • Area 52 January 25, 2018, 12:20 pm

Good way to get your point across to someone.

  • Evan January 25, 2018, 12:03 pm

The ultimate mall ninja item that nobody in their right mind would ever allow anywhere near their rifle. Pass.

  • Jon January 25, 2018, 11:53 am

This is really dumb. Giving it recognition is even dumber. Please tell us about products that are actually relevant to shooting and shooting sports. I know a lot of people and I don’t know anyone that would be even remotely interested in this. If you gun malfunctions… learn to clear it. If you think you need a knife as a backup….carry one on your belt.

    Jon

  • Norm Fishler January 25, 2018, 11:44 am

If that blade is sharp it will, at the very least, discourage someone grabbing for it to take away your gun. Not saying I’d have one, but that seems to me as being the biggest plus for such an add on.

  • Shooter January 25, 2018, 11:08 am

How can there be a MSRP when the final product materials have not been decided? $200 for a potential piece of something that want stand up to the rigors of real life? IDK

  • Michael Keim January 25, 2018, 10:35 am

I’ll bet this will put a lot of s owflaje panties in a bunch. Haha

    • Michael Keim January 25, 2018, 10:37 am

Snowflake. Sorry, thumbs went crazy for a second.

  • Todd January 25, 2018, 10:17 am

    COOL!

Ever since I took the cup holder and the compass mount off of my AR I’ve wanted to spend some ammunition money and expend some carry weight on another useless attachment!

    Todd.

    • Norm Fishler January 25, 2018, 11:39 am

      Todd,
But what about the toilet paper roll hanger?

      • Todd January 25, 2018, 6:53 pm

Replaced that with a Pez dispenser.

        Todd.

        • dave trowbridge January 25, 2018, 10:47 pm

TP roller, PEZ dispenser, aux diaper dispenser… chainsaw adapter… if it fits an aux rail.. Someone will buy it… this is Amerika!!!

But GREAT if the US-sponsored ISIS Mooslamic terrists! attack us in this “GWOT”….

    Right, Clay?

  • Eric January 25, 2018, 10:12 am

Looks like the blade functions to channel blood down into the interior of the grip – use it once on the battlefield, and clean it how?

  • Abnormal January 25, 2018, 10:02 am

This reminds me of the old saying: “Never bring a knife to a gun fight.”

  • Charles Valenzuela January 25, 2018, 9:57 am

Slightly less useful than brass knuckles on a wristwatch. In case you are attacked by the guy who asks you what the time is.

  • ANDREW SIVO January 25, 2018, 9:55 am

This looks like a beach umbrella spike. I would hate to write the report for using this tool on a suspect?

  • Charles Valenzuela January 25, 2018, 9:54 am

Slightly less useful than brass knuckles on a wristwatch.

  • Dr. Frankey January 25, 2018, 9:45 am

I thought the Geneva Convention prohibited puncture type bayonets?

    • Godfrey Daniel January 25, 2018, 11:26 am

      All bayonets puncture. Just sayin’.

    • Oaf January 26, 2018, 1:57 am

Urban legend. Neither the Hague or Geneva Conventions say anything about bayonets.

  • Jeremy January 25, 2018, 9:38 am

It’s for when a fired round will give your being away, necessary when you want to be stealth, such as a mid night ambush

  • Robert January 25, 2018, 9:35 am

I really don’t see the utility of such a cumbersome, $200 add-on. I guess I’m just not tacticool.

  • Gewgaw January 25, 2018, 9:30 am

  • ImOffendedTreatMeSpecial January 25, 2018, 9:28 am

I think the chainsaw bayonet would be way cooler. Heavier bur more useful. By all means let’s make more stupid products the anti-gunners can use against us in their media campaigns.

    • David Channell January 25, 2018, 10:36 am

      Exactly

    • Sigfredo Arriaza January 25, 2018, 4:31 pm

Agree with you my buddy, stupidities that we have to pay , with the anti-gungs pals, ha,ha,ha,I think is really useless right now in home land, believe !!

  • Jay January 25, 2018, 9:11 am

I’m sure some will find this interesting and want one. Not me. If the bad guys ever get close enough in a shtf situation that I need this, I’ve missed all 9-16 times with one of my side arms, that’s not very likely to happen!

  • Jeffrey L. Frischkorn January 25, 2018, 9:05 am

\”Wickedly wonderful?\” \” \”Coolest product?\” \”$199?\” The shooting sports segment of the outdoors media consistently out-does itself in its efforts to give consumerism a bad name.. Use that two-hundred bucks to some god use: A pass to a shooting range, joining a gun club, buy ammunition, use it to recruit or retain a shooter, save it help you go on a hunting trip or a rifle match. As Thoreau observed even long before the rise of the current electronic revolution: \”Men have become tools of their tools.\” Wonderful? Coolest? Nope. Stupid is much more like it…

    • Frank Cannon January 25, 2018, 9:39 am

+1. People already hang too many stupid things from their firearms. I swear 99% of people would be further ahead if they took an out of the box Bushmaster, without an optic, and simply spent the extra time and money on ammo and structured training.

  • R Boucher January 25, 2018, 8:57 am

Do you really think Tactical responders will be looking down to find their sidearm.

  • Phil January 25, 2018, 8:47 am

    Not very practical.
Will probably go the same route as those pistol bayonets of bygone years.
I can find a better use for my $199.

    • Jim Kiser,Sr January 25, 2018, 12:21 pm

Damn, that’s just about enough money to buy a 1000 rounds of 5.56. I think I’d rather do that.
But I do think it will look cool but not very practical.

  • William Walker January 25, 2018, 8:46 am

Dumb! The scenario he discribed “2 guys in a room, primary gun jams” so then what, you attack 2 armed assailants with a sharp stick?!? I’m personally waiting for a flamethrower that will attach to my AR rail system.

    • dave trowbridge January 25, 2018, 10:56 pm

There actually IS A FLAMETHROWER ATTACH as adv in one of my mags just recently… it’s professional n not a joke r cheap.. a serious nasty weapon attach… might g oogle it… not a joke!

  • GC January 25, 2018, 8:31 am

My first reactions were that this bayonet is too bulky and that it would not actually stand up to the rigors of hand-to-hand. Reading the comments, I see that most folks think it’s stupid to even have a bayonet because no one would ever get that close. That reminded me that back in Vietnam, the early F-4 Phantoms deployed did not have guns because that was old school, and we were going to shoot down all those MIGs with our missiles. Anyone who thought we needed guns was an idiot, because jets would never get that close to each other in the modern missile age. Then, those jets went into combat and the realities settled in…and we were retro-fitting guns onto the F-4s. Is a bayonet needed for plinking, putting holes in paper, or shooting varmints…of course not. What are the chances of ever needing it in a real CQC scenario if you’re not in the military…somewhere just north of zero. However, if you like being prepared no matter the odds, why not have a bayonet? (Not this one, but an actual bayonet.) Relative to the plethora of accessories out there, they’re cheap, they do not need to be permanently attached, and they can serve dozens of other purposes.

    • Jim Kiser,Sr January 25, 2018, 12:28 pm

When I went through basic training and we had the bayonet training it looked pretty practical. I mean I’m charging or the other side is charging and you just don’t have time to grab your sidearm. It would come in handy then. Also when we had bayonet training we were not planning on having a sidearm. I was infantry and not everyone got a sidearm. In that case I would really love having a bayonet.
A regular bayonet like you suggest. A regular one can do much more than stick the enemy. So your correct.

    • Evan January 25, 2018, 5:03 pm

We had bayonets issued to us in the Marine Corps. Big Ka-Bar type things that generally stayed in a sheath attached to your gear. I used mine for carving graffiti into sentry posts, and once to slash a tire when some hajji decided to sass me. I never heard of anyone using them for anything more substantial than things like that.

  • Dan January 25, 2018, 8:29 am

    Lmao. So lame.

  • mauser6863 January 25, 2018, 8:20 am

The Bayonet still has a use and was last deployed in a classic Bayonet Charge was in Iraq in 2004.

    http://www.businessinsider.com/the-most-famous-bayonet-charge-of-modern-conflict-2012-10

As author Robert Heinlein pointed out, “No weapon is obsolete in the hands of a man who knows how to use it”

While I will grant you, the use and the death toll from the bayonet was and has been small. Most troop flee, rather than feel the pointy bit. Which is the entire “point”, getting the enemy to quit the fight.

Modern Armies should focus on Bayonet designs that are basically fixed blade field knives that serve many purpose and can also be used as a Bayonet. The Finns did a decent job with their M1962 Bayonet for the Valmet Rifles, which was basically a traditional Finnish Puukko knife that doubled as a Bayonet. The VZ58 was the influence for the attachment system.

Regarding Home Defense and having a Bayonet, just in case the bad guy tries to grab your rifle in the dark, personally I think it has little or no merit, like the pistol Bayonet. Other than a cool looking toy for the “Call of Duty” or PUBG community, I see no use for this product.

    • GregS January 26, 2018, 3:52 am

If you read the actual after action report of that incident, you will note the same effect would have ensued if the Brits were dressed in pink tutus and carrying feather dusters instead of L85’s.

  • Rufus January 25, 2018, 8:14 am

So yet another stupid product from SHOT. Somebody said, let’s absolutely ruin the weight, balance, and handling of the newer AR hand guards. While we’re at it, let’s add a big stupid retracting bayonet, because that’s really practical.

Dumb dumb dumb. And idiots will gladly line up to buy i.

  • z January 25, 2018, 7:57 am

Yeah – like there’s so much call for a bayonet, what…? Waste of time, money and ad space – get oughta here …!!!

  • Infidel762X51 January 25, 2018, 7:46 am

Personally, I prefer the chainsaw, it adds a little more weight but is infinitely more useful. Just another junk accessory to give the gun grabbers more ammunition.

  • BILL January 25, 2018, 7:26 am

    WTF?

  • ToddB January 25, 2018, 7:16 am

Why does anybody care about a bayonet in this day and age? Much less pay for one? Some of this stuff I simply do not understand. Like EVERY AR has to have a collapsing stock. I looked at the rack in my shop other day 2 dozen ARs carbine barrels to big heavy varmint barrels, every one had the same M4 stock. I actually had trouble buying a full length fixed stock. Everybody wants little carbines….to put a bayonet on, for all that hand to hand combat we face daily.

    • Jim Kiser,Sr January 25, 2018, 12:35 pm

Yeah, that’s why when I went to the M4 stock I kept my standard stock. It’s a perfectly functional item.

  • Cyrus January 25, 2018, 6:42 am

    lmao – Stupid

  • Flep Vandergaard January 25, 2018, 6:33 am

Ummm… no. Something that size usually shoots a 40mm projectile. This reminds me of the similar ‘Israeli tire deflation bayonet/flash hider’ of a few years ago. Still waiting for a decent 1913/Picatinny rail combination back scratcher/fly swatter, that would be far more useful ‘downrange’. LOL!

  • George January 25, 2018, 6:23 am

As an 02 SOT manufacturer, I hope to be able to attend some day. I just can’t afford it.

  • Fred January 25, 2018, 6:15 am

Great idea. Mounting this to a plastic rail may be not so good if it actually needs to be used. Plastic handrails won’t take that much abuse. Maybe add a muzzle ring mount like standard bayonets to give it a little more strength at the connection point to the rifle. They work as a system…

  • Warren January 25, 2018, 5:43 am

Looks interesting, but is there really a need for this?
In a self-defense scenario, you should never let anyone get close enough to you where you would need to use a bayonet.
If you can’t stop the threat with a AR w/ a 30 round mag, from a distance, then you should just pack it in.

  • Geo January 25, 2018, 5:17 am

This is the kind of stupid nonsense product that causes the general public to think of firearms enthusiasts as whacked and dangerous.

    Cut it out!

    • Al January 25, 2018, 8:55 am

      We are.

  • LG January 25, 2018, 4:29 am

A retractable bayonet for the AR 15 ? You got be kidding me. Who in the world, of a sane mind, would want such a piece of junk. Well I see the videogame players what is it called again, Tour of Duty, or those who watched Rambo too many times buying that piece of garbage. Well somebody is making money on the Walter Mitty fools. It has an advantage for someone though, the anti-gunners will jump on this like a dog on a bone to use it to make us look like a gang blood thirsty hallucinated and delirious wannabes.
Sorry for the tone of my comment, but we are flooded with those pseudo “combat” or “tactical” devices which do not serve the cause of the 2nd Amendment.

    • Ken January 25, 2018, 12:35 pm

Amen to that, Brother! Do we really need more reasons for the antigun public, media and pols to fear and hate our ARs? Historically, bayonets were almost NEVER used in combat except as a psychological tool of intimidation. (See “On Combat” or “On Killing” by Col. Grossman.)

Relatively crude. It could easily have been designed to be 25% its current width (using a flat blade) and mounted laterally (or inferiorly) on the rail much like a disposable scalpel.

Every other industry opens the floor at their conventions to the public. Thanks for the exclusion. Just came here to tell you I won’t be listening to anything out of shot show.

Larry……you’re WRONG crybaby……Try walking into the NAMM show (National Association of Music Merchants) to see all of the latest and greatest innovations in the Music industry….not happening.

Well, it NEVER was a consumer show….it’s always been for dealers and suppliers to hook up and see what people want to stock in their stores and warehouses.

Try working a Gun shop sometime. If the idiots and fools off the street aren’t bad enough, the morons that are anti will make your day.
Manufacturers and suppliers don’t need the general public at large telling them all the things they do wrong, looking for discounts (gunnies are a cheap lot, ya’know?) and just plain being a PITA and gawking.
Their people would be constantly dealing with looky loo’s and feelers, and NOT making sales.

The AVN show isn’t open to public either! Although I’m not sure if the general public would want to get in to that one or not….
