Mossberg Announces the Mag-Fed 590M Shockwave!

The 590M Shockwave with a 10-round, double-stack magazine. MSRP is $721

It’s here, folks! Mossberg announced Tuesday that their non-NFA Shockwave platform got the 590″M” (magazine-fed) makeover!

The 590M Shockwave is a 12-gauge firearm that features a 15-inch barrel, a bird’s head pistol grip, and 10-round double-stack magazine.  Though users can also purchase additional 5-,10-,15-, and 20-round capacity magazines to go with this little pump gun.

As Mossberg is careful to note, just because the 590M Shockwave is not regulated under the National Firearms Act (NFA) because it is technically considered a “firearm” under the Gun Control Act of 1968, prospective purchasers should check local and state laws before buying.

Earlier this month Clay reviewed the standard, full-size Mossberg 590M, touting it as the clear winner over the other mag-fed scatter new to the market.  Assuming that this new Shockwave version feeds as reliably and consistently as the regular 590M (and there’s no reason to think that it won’t), Mossberg may have a real crowd pleaser on their hands.

The key to the success of the 590M may be in the mags.  Mossberg’s proprietary magazines are “constructed with hardened-steel feed lips, over-molded steel shell ramps and an anti-cant, rounded follower to ensure reliable feeding. Additional features include an easy-grip, molded external shell; proprietary self-lubricating polymer magazine body; heavy-duty ASTM-A-228 music-wire magazine spring for prolonged service life; removable floor plate for ease of cleaning; and durable black oxide finish on the steel components.”

Those patented magazines engage with notches machined into the firearm’s receiver, ensuring a positive lock-up.  “The all-steel, heated-treated magazine release button and housing are optimally-positioned in front of the trigger guard for convenient, ambidextrous access for unloading and reloading. The location of the mag release does not interfere with cycling of the action. The well-executed design allows for proper balance with a full-magazine located at the center of gravity point,” states the Connecticut-based company.

We’re looking forward to getting one in for review.  Stay tuned.

Need to make them in 12, 20, and .410 gauges, and make them also in the pump and semiautomatic lineup as well. Then you will have a nice 3-gun ready shotgun and also offer up great hunting weapons because the magazine is closer to the body so you can increase your swing speed for your follow through without all the weight being in the tube.
