People often recommend pump shotguns for self-defense because they’re affordable, simple and effective. However, short shotguns used for protection don’t hold a lot of ammo and are slow to reload one shell at a time.
The 590M doesn’t have these problems. Feeding on 5-, 10-, 15- or even 20-round magazines, this shotgun offers drum mag volumes of ammo in a tidy, compact package.
Overview
Mossberg is releasing two versions of the 590M, a base model and an upgraded Tri-Rail version. The standard model is a straightforward 590 converted to use box magazines. It has a standard stock and forend and a simple bead front sight.
The 590M Tri-Rail is the practical-tactical version with a railed forend for lights and other accessories, raised ghost ring sights and a long heatshield to cover the barrel.
The guns have dual push-button magazine releases in front of the trigger guard. This makes them essentially ambidextrous, just like standard 590s. All the other 590 features are there too including twin action bars for smooth cycling, drilled and tapped receivers for optics, heavy barrel and improved receiver components.
The 590M has simple and intuitive ambidextrous magazine release buttons.

How can these not leave an impression?
Mossberg isn’t the first company to produce a magazine-fed pump action, but this week shows that they have done it the best.
First off, the magazine catch system is great. With 30 seconds of practice, you can snap the mags into the gun reliably and easily. The cutouts on the magazine along with a notch in front make it actually difficult to do incorrectly.
This is not an overgrown and retooled AR or AK magazine copied by Mossberg. The magazine and magwell show ingenuity and attention to detail. Mossberg developed the double stack magazines from ground up and they work great.
Secondly, the magazine release is a button, almost in the same spot it would be on an AR. This makes transitioning to the 590M from a familiar rifle platform simple and easy.
Mossberg has never been shy about innovation. And even though they weren’t first to bring box mag-fed shotgun to the market, their magazine system shows that they’re not following in anyone’s footsteps.
Pricing
The shotguns are priced in-line with other premium and specialized Mossberg shotguns. The base model 590M has a $721 MSRP while the Tri-Rail model runs a little more at $801. Mags aren’t cheap, ranging from $100 to about $140 but you get what you pay for.
Real-world prices might be lower, but if you see one in stock buy it fast. I predict your local gun shop is going to have a hard time keeping these on shelves. Get one while the getting is good!

Very nice! Long barrel or short barrel? I like the effectiveness of of sabot rounds, they have good reach. Close quarters, a short barrel is preffereble. I’d like to try one.
The interview would have been better if the range was quiet for the few minutes that was used. Why would you ask expose anyone to the noise of weapons firing when you are conducting an informative interview.

Great innovation, might give Mossberg a rea boost up the market, eSPECially if military and/or police pick up on it. One thing I caught, they advertized the twin rail system like they’ve always had it. They were rather late in installing that second rail. Anyway, I think Mossberg makes a pretty fair shotgun, it’s just… welll, every one I had, and admittedly it has been a good many years, they rattled and just… felt… cheap. I know the receiver doesn’t take a great deal of stress and doesn’t really need to be made of steel, I just find it reassuring you might say.Then there’s one more thing- that tang safety. I consider it a wonderful thing!… in a duck blind or in the hunting fields. Once when newly married (near 30 now and still counting!) something went bump in the night and telling my then new wife to stay put took the Mossberg and went into the night. Not long after I heard a noise behind me. I turned and there was my new wife- and I realized I had my thumb on the safety and finger on the trigger. BAD MOVE, that. Fortunately, I don’t believe in shooting unless I KNOW what I’m shooting at. My wife got a rather loud and one way discussian and I got a Remington 870 and have it yet. But, I do know the cure and sure answer for my dangerous error is training, training and training. Am I saying Remington’s are better than the Mossberg? No.I reckon the quality is near equal these days and things like my feelings about safety locations are just opinions. But, I feel it IS easier and more natural to keep a finger on the trigger guard when the safety is there too. Just my oh-2 cents.
I want this, but once I got to thinking I realized it would potentially be a bad system (assuming I’ve not seen it tested). Imagine a scenario where you get into a very close proximity to a subject. If subject was to hit/grab the shotgun at the magazine it could potentially break or etc rendering it useless. I think sometimes simple is better. But as a range gun or etc it would be fun as hell. Just my opinion ion.
You definitely don’t have to worry about a perp reaching out and breaking the mag. Probably don’t have to worry about it even if they were using a hammer to try it, lol.

Certainly looks interesting. Nothing says “cover fire” like a hi-cap box mag fed shottie.
I, too, have more of them in semi-auto flavor than I will hopefully ever need, but I welcome the new contender in the field.
Oh, and according to Mike Davidson, the pioneer of the “MD Arms” 20 round Saiga drums, he designed and possibly even manufactured the double-stack mag’s for this beast. We were hoping he would do the same for Saiga’s and Vepr’s, but it seems the wind is out of their sails for the time being with import issues, manufacturer insolvency, etc.
These are based off of MD arms patent, and developed with him. I don’t think he’s doing the actual manufacturing, but I didn’t ask that part.
From what he’s said so far, it seems Mossberg has an exclusive license, and he thinks their patent and license rights would also apply if people tried to adapt another gun to work with them. I don’t follow the reasoning on that part, but he’s not stating all the details yet.
I didn’t actually design this specific magazine. It is under licensing agreement with me on my patent though. Someone could build a new gun or adapt an existing gun to take these mags without infringing. They couldn’t design a new tower area of the mag though to replace the existing to fit other guns. That would actually be infringing on multiple patents to do so.
Adaptive Tactical out of Idaho was instrumental in this entire platform. They designed the 590M and pushed it to Mossberg. After Mossberg signed on to the idea they refined the shotgun together. Adaptive also came up with their own design for the double stack mags these use as well with very little help from me. After we had a licensing agreement in place I did provide our files and offered some verbal suggestions but Adaptive basically made their own design.
Adaptive Tactical deserves a lot of credit for getting the 590M to market!
I would wait for a 930 with a detachable mag. It would be nice if existing guns could be refit for the mag, but would probably cost close to a new gun for the work.

Okay, I’m confused… Why does a box magazine fed pump shotgun still have the under barrel magazine tube? The pump action only travels 4 – 5 inches, so why the long under barrel tube? Has anyone handled or shot one of these that could explain this design? At first glance, it just looks like they forgot to get rid of the old magazine and added a box magazine. Does it utilize both magazine systems? That would really be cool, a double- fed system that has a reserve tank in the tube to get you by until you could slap in a new magazine, but even then, does that mean you have to remove the box mag to load the tube mag?
Cheaper tooling costs. Use an existing platform, less setup cost, less loss when it flops on the market.

It would be awesome if they utilized the existing magazine tube as well as the external magazine. So the gun could be ran without an external magazine as well. You would add an additional 9 or so rounds to what you are already carrying in the external magazine.

Its good to see gun companies be inventive. However time and testing will tell if this gun and others like it are suitable for military and police use.
Whether you love or hate this idea, what impresses me is the innovation the gun companies seem to be willing to try recently. Some very odd, very cool things are being tried. We laugh at some of the ingenious solutions to non-existent problems they’re coming up with but at least they’re will to take a risk and try! I think that’s great.
A full capacity 12 gauge pump, and a Mossberg to boot? Gotta love it. My first shotgun was a Mossberg and in 50 years it never failed to function properly, no matter how wet or dirty it was, or what I fed it. I would buy one of these in spite of the big mag prices just because of the reliability of their products. And the ability to keep a few loaded mags ready means it would be ready to go nearly as fast as a gun with a loaded tube, but with Far Less reload time should that ever be needed.

3 of the 20 round magazines will make it perfect. 1 in the gun and 2 to carry for fast reload. Finally some jam proof fire power with the right amount of loaded ammo ready to use. Mossberg did great.
I have a Mossburg 500. I’ve never fired it. It was given to me by one of my brothers. I just looked in my gun safe and I could not confirmed that it is a 500. The shot gun in all the way to the back and I couldn’t really get a look at it. I’ve had Mossburgs but, it’s been so long ago and my memory is not what it used to be. Please forgive me, I’m an old man that’s in bad health, I just can’t see myself owning a shotgun like the 590m. If you can’t hit it with five shots you really need to reassess your shooting skills..
It’s a defensive firearm. Sometimes there are more than 5 adversaries. Ask the Korean shopkeepers who held off the looting mobs during the LA riots.
About time somebody figured out double-stacks in shotguns. I agree with the gent about a 930 with detach mags, but they need to add the Shockwave to the entourage. The ultimate would be a 930, detach mags, OAL 26.5″ with a 14″ barrel. Yeah!

I actually figured out the double stacks in 2007 during the MD-20 drum project. Didn’t get to test the idea until 2009 though but from day one my original live fire prototype has never had a single failure to feed. My patent didn’t become official until May of 2013. Since the Saiga-12 market never panned out for me I am very thankful the 590M was brought to life and gave the double stacks a chance to shine!
The 10 shot mags are already the size of two AR 15 30 round mags stacked together, how big must the 20’s be. It would be nice to see them side by side with an AR-15 or AR-10 mag for comparison.
A better comparison would be to put them next to a Saiga-12 magazine that fires the same large round… For instance the 590M 20rd double is slightly shorter than the 12rd single stack Saiga-12 mag. It is just under twice as wide as the single stack. Way more efficient than single stack…

Mossberg has the price beat by a lot. Also comparing user videos and comments on the Black Ace gun it strongly appears the Mossberg has it beat in function and reliability too. Look up the Norinco magfed gun and compare it to the Black Ace. The Norinco predates it by over a decade…

Question. I see the big long mag tube under the barrel. Can this be sued WITHOUT the magazines, like a regular tube fed shotgun?

No, once the conversion is in place it has too feed from the nags. The tube is only there for the forend to slide on. Ne advised the mags are BIG. The 10 round is about the size of a double wide 30 rnd AR-10 mag.
I’m just waiting for a good semi-auto. A reliable, detachable magazine fed, semi-auto shotgun is what we need to see, and it doesn’t have to look like an AR15 or an AK47! I’d honestly rather it didn’t. I want a shotgun that handles like a shotgun but feeds from a detachable box magazine.

$100 to $140 for a magazine on top of another $700 or $800 for the shotgun? It better do a hell of a lot more than a standard 590 than just hold an extra couple shells.
Can’t say anything negative about Mossberg, never got hold of a bad one I pull the trigger it goes bang bang. With rising prices Mossberg remains affordable, I like the idea of keeping the heavy loaded magazine center of the gun great idea.
They should also come out with a belt fed model just like a SAW . . . that way you could kill the whole flock of geese as they fly by instead of just one for the dinner plate. Oh yeah, Little Jimmy could bring it to school for “Show & Tell” as an added bonus!
