I would argue that the Mossberg 500 Series platform is the best pump shotgun on the planet. I have used and shot them so much over the years that I can operate the gun in my sleep, and have had them in no less than six varieties.

Until now the problem for us die hard Mossberg fans out here was having to deal with aftermarket parts if we want to trick out the guns. Replacement stocks do work fine, sometimes, when you buy them from the right company and not some copy from China, but they bring down the value of the gun should you want to sell it later (I always end up losing the original stock).

Now you can finally buy a Mossberg 500 platform with stock rails. It is called the Tri-Rail system and to me it seems like the right balance of comfort and function. The first gun in the video is a model 590A1, which is the infantry shotgun of the US Armed Forces as well as the shotgun of many specialty units. This is my favorite of the Model 500 varieties because it comes with ghost ring sights, a bayonet lug and a speed feed stock that hold 4 more rounds in addition to the 8+1 in the gun.

The bottom rail on the Tri-Rail appears to be molded in, and there are two side rails that you can remove for comfort if you are not using them. The “Blackwater” model that Tom Taylor from Mossberg is demonstrating also has a receiver rail. As a basic tactical platform it has everything you need, and it is all factory original, so the gun will retain its value.

The “Chainsaw,” which is the second gun in the video, is a revolutionary new product from the engineers at Mossberg. I’d like to give it a full review and beat it up a bit, but it sure looks cool, and it could be really useful in a SWAT-type of application where you are using the shotgun for breaching and as a combat weapon immediately after. With a laser system the two handed waist position could be extremely effective with this new attachment. If it is durable and can take a hammering I expect this to take off in the law enforcement market.

Mossberg is known for making products that give you the most bang for your buck. In this economy that is a big deal and the savings that these tactical additions to the Mossberg line will save you on aftermarket parts are considerable. Plus you get a gun that is factory original, so everything fits and works with no tinkering. I am eager to get my hands on one or several of these new Mossbergs. Expect a full review soon.

Nick, I notice that people like you are always bad mouthing a product that you don’t like. Why read the article if you’re not into Mossberg? Some of us are. You don’t hear anybody bad mouthing Benelli, Remington, Winchester or other gun makers. They are simply expressing the joy and love for their Mossberg. Maybe you’ve never heard the old saying, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, keep quiet.” Again, if you’re not a Mossberg fan, you shouldn’t have even bothered to read the article. Grow up and stop the madness.

I know that I’m going to get flamed for this, but I don’t care. These guns are ridiculous and they’re rubbish. All it takes is gimmicky handle and everyone has to have an entry level “zombie” shotgun with the words “blackwater” written on it. Oh, and I forgot the cool sticker someone mentioned. Really? Are you the same people that bought the Call of Duty edition jeep wrangler? While it might look cool and work well in a video game, this handle is a flawed design that’s meant to only drum up sales from the masses of ham ‘n eggers out there who just want to stand with it, shirtless in front of the mirror in their bed room and pretend they’re the Terminator. I haven’t found a Mossberg shotgun made during the past two decades that I had to have. They’re Walmart guns that rattle. Menacing? Save your money and buy a quality gun that doesn’t make you look like a clown.

I’ve had my Chainsaw for almost a year and absolutely love it. It’s an extremely imposing piece when people see it. The only upgrade that I did was installed the Hogue pistol grip to replace the hard, plastic original that came with it. With the weapon’s recoil almost fully being absorbed into the grip, the Hogue was an ideal solution. The breaching tip that’s integrated into the barrell prevents installation of the Mossberg heat shield that would make this bad boy so much more intimidating.

The zombie version has only two differences from the much cheaper regular chainsaw, which I own. One, a tactical light, (I prefer to pic out my own), and a green sticker on the side.

I like the look of the Chainsaw, and am getting ready to order one. But I have seen on several sites that there is a MOssberg 500 chainsaw ZMB edition model# 50461 no one has a picture of one and when I contact Mossberg they dont give any detail…
Has anyone else seen or heard of this??

I hope the chainsaw takes off well in the market. It is an extremely interesting concept. I agree with the writer-this weapon coupled with the right laser system would be a force to be reckoned with!

plus one for Rick’s comment. looks like a string trimmer handle. Cost less than a good Stihl. I’m in.

If these new guns are on their website, they’re doing a good job of hiding them. When will they be available?

    • Administrator January 27, 2011, 4:18 am

Mossberg is an old company and used to the print schedule of release. Don’t expect them for months in gunshops.

I checked it out at the show, feels more like a weed whacker though.
