The Sheriff of Harnett County, North Carolina, wants the pubic to be armed and ready to deal with the recent uptick of violent crime in the area, ABC 11 reports.
“When I am out with my family, even though I am a cop, I don’t go anywhere without a gun,” said Sheriff Larry Rollins on Monday night before an audience of about 100 people, who gathered at the Spring Hill United Methodist Church to discuss how to fight back against the criminal element.
“I mean it’s sad we have to have that attitude, but I am going to protect myself and my family,” the sheriff continued. “I want my deputies at your house just as fast as they can when you got a problem, but you better be able to take care of business until we get there if you have to protect your family.”
Indeed. An armed society is a polite society.
All the sniping at the United Methodist Church reminds me of Christ’s short, punchy retort to the Pharisees (who later instigated the judicial murder of Jesus of Nazareth for not doing that “good old time religion”) – “You generation of vipers!”
Over twenty years ago, I discussed the way in which the national convention of our Episcopal Church had gotten away from what we believed locally with our parish priest, who told me something I never forgot – “I’d rather live for something than against it.” This was at a time when our Presiding Bishop, a black woman, had managed to “lose” hundreds of thousands of dollars of Church money, hard-earned by the Church membership and donated out of Christian love.
I now see that neither that particular Presiding Bishop’s race nor her gender had anything to do with the fact she was either a crook or incompetent to administer finances for the Anglican Communion’s American branch – but the General Convention which rushed to appoint anyone to the office of Presiding Bishop with the right tan and gender surely was responsible for that mess.
And so it goes with local UMCs and their national government – or states and the Federal government, or small towns and state government for that matter. Sniping at a local congregation at that church because the national church isn’t listening to the folks back home – especially when they did the right thing by having the local sheriff over to tell them the facts of life – isn’t too bright.

Finally one of our common sense type of leaders telling the public ,what all other people in positions of authority are afraid to tell the public ,that an armed society is a polite society,and could be no truer statement could be stated .It is not the guns you have to worry about ,it has already been shown that a person with mental defects will use any weapon available to cause as much harm and panic in an uninformed society that they run around as if the sky was falling. This NC Sheriff should go on a cross country speaking tour,he is exactly right by stating that you had better find a way of keeping the bad guys away until uniformed officers arrive and to take care of the person or persons that are committing whatever crime they are up to at bay.This type of guidance should be mandatory for the whole U.S.A. !!!!!
I lived in Coastal Carolina for many years while in service; it was a beautiful Norman Rockwell type experience until the stock market and real estate boom of the nineties brought northern developers and Yankees in droves. Even in some of the most previously secluded and inaccessible areas Down-east the drugs and drug dealers have moved in. I’m not a natural born Southerner but after decades I became an adopted son of the South and it was a shame to learn what Yankee Go Home really meant.
Even in a Mayberry, times have changed and Annie get your gun is becoming a call of necessity. Such a shame, were I a very wealthy person I would build a private rural community for family and friends that would once again provide a place where children could play and roam freely and the daily lives of its citizens would be free of these corrosive outside dangers. I retired and left what no longer felt like home due to the influx of outsiders and the bad things they brought with them. I never understood that thinking or thought it would come from me, but times change.
It really is rare to have something positive said to a group of citizens by an elected official these days, especially where anything concerning self-defense & firearms are the subject ! I have been a member of the United Methodist Church all my life, I am originally from Indiana but my career transfered me to Eastern North Carolina in 1998. We still attend a UMC every week and we are predominantly conservative church. We worship our Lord, we pray for all & we open our hearts & minds to many ideas but, dont agree with all of them. Yet we will take the time to open our facility to folks like this Sheriff to meet with groups of citizens & spread his support of CCW . I carry a side arm everywhere I go & that includes church meetings & services. However we do hunt, fish, prepare for the future, at other times we congregate in the countryside to spend all day shooting our wide variety of FIREARMS. Good or bad ? We must be prepared, for all the evil of Satan and all the goodness of Jesus Christ. Both of which require action from God’s people!

While I absolutely agree with what the Sheriff said he has an advantage over the common citizen in being permitted to carry anywhere he would like without risking criminal penalty*. In fact I would *guess* that it is illegal for a common citizen to carry in the church in which the sheriff was speaking. That is because a lot of states prohibit carrying in a church for some reason. That is a major sticking point with me. We have allowed this two tier system where agents of the government have greater rights than the people who ostensibly employ them.
*See HR 218 Law Enforcement Officers’ Safety Act which exempts all current & retired law enforcement from local and state laws (but not federal) regarding carrying a firearm. Interesting a federal law wipes away all local and state laws but they keep their own federal ones. Seems a bit hypocritical to me.
Definitely good advice. It’s somewhat ironic that the United Methodist Church would allow him to give his talk considering they are anti-gun.
Just because the denomination’s leadership hieirarchy has been taken over by the LGBT, globalist peacenik “This is a vocation, not a calling” crowd, doesn’t mean all the individual churches and their members have lost their senses. You can bet this particular congregation – as a whole – hew to the “hate the sin, love the sinner” ethic that doesn’t preclude taking sensible precautions. Many people have stayed on as members in hopes of reclaiming this previously Christian denomination. My parents and baby brother stayed. I and three others found different church homes.
