Overview

In one of the biggest surprises of the SHOT Show, Colt has updated the Gold Cup 1911. Fully updated for 2017, the Gold Cup Tropy is going to make 1911 fans very happy. The gun is beautiful in the stainless steel finish we shot. It looks absolutely gorgeous. The sights are a Bo-Mar rear, with a Novak fiber optic front. Every model comes with a national match barrel, and from the factory is available in 9mm or .45 ACP. The front strap and mainspring housing are both checkered, and it comes with an EGW magwell as a standard feature. The controls are all extended, and the fit and finish is superb. Colt bills this as an out of the box competitive match gun, and I believe it on this one.

Impression

Let’s talk about why people actually buy a Gold Cup, which is the trigger. It is there on this beauty; the new Gold Cup has a better trigger than some fully custom 1911s I have shot. In fact, almost all of them. In a very intriguing twist, Colt went back to a series 70 configuration on this model. Talk about a surprise! The series 80 introduced a firing pin block, way back in the 1980s. This block changed the way the trigger felt, and most of us felt it was largely unnecessary. Before now, you had the option with some Brownells parts, to rip the series 80 parts out, and cobble together a solution. Well, no more. The series 80 is still arguable useful on a duty gun, at least from a liability standpoint. But it is nice to see the series 70 return on a born and bred race gun.

Question, should I purchase the “new ” 2017 Gold Cup Elite from my local gun shop. The Colt Gold Cup “Elite” is in my local shop right now. It comes in the “Custom Shop” “Blue Cardboard Box”
Elite is missing the front fiber optic sight, magwell, & extended trigger safety, as compared to 2017 GCT.
I assume it has a better trigger, but how much better, if at all.

    Thanks, Rob

Beautiful and going back to the 70 is taking Colt in the right direction. My only question is why Colt didn’t bring back the 70 MK IV’s sexy flat top slide–then this new gun would be perfect!
