The handgun has seemingly always been the preferred self-defense tool for many people, especially those who carry a gun on their person or in their vehicle on a regular basis. This is true despite the handgun’s many and obvious limitations, specifically regarding power and accuracy at longer ranges. Another issue is that even with the accessory rail available on many modern handguns, one is still limited in both the number of accessories that can be added as well and an easy option for mounting optics.

CAA has a solution with their RONI kit, an ingenious polymer and metal “sleeve” that wraps around many popular pistol models to create a compact and multiple rail-ready carbine. The standard RONI is intended for law enforcement use as it converts a pistol into a short-barreled rifle. However, CAA has now developed the new STAB-RONI for civilian use without having to file National Firearms Act (NFA) paperwork. The key is that what used to be the stock is now an arm brace. STAB stands for Stabilizer Brace.

It should be noted, and a warning is included in the box, that the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (BATF) has approved the arm brace as an arm brace, not as a makeshift stock. Shouldering the arm brace is illegal. Kits are available for most models of Berettas, CZ-75s and their clones (like the Jericho/Baby Desert Eagle), Glocks, H&Ks, Springfield XDs and the Bersa Thunder. I tested out the kit for the Glock which accommodates the Glock 17, 18, 19, 22, 23, 25, 32 and 32.

The system gives you a lot of additional space for accessories as well as a wrist brace for added stability. Shown with Glock 19 9mm installed.

Installation

The RONI kit is designed to open up like a clamshell in order to insert your pistol. A separate polymer charging handle is designed to go over the rear of the slide at the rear using the slide serrations and rear sight to firmly hold it for manual operation. Two ambidextrous charging handle tabs extend from the side for ease of use. The slide lock and magazine release remain within easy reach for standard operation. There is also an ambidextrous paddle that blocks the trigger and acts as a safety. It can be pushed down out of the way for access to the trigger with the trigger finger of either hand.

At the top of the RONI Kit there are nine inches of Picatinny rail which can easily accommodate back up iron sights as well as a red dot optic and a magnifier if desired. At the front of the RONI Kit at the sides and bottom there are additional rails measuring two inches in length, plenty for accommodating extras like lights and lasers. Please note that as this is still legally a handgun you cannot add a forward vertical grip.

The front of the kit includes a metal end cap barrel shroud and muzzle brake/flash hider. There is also a finger groove notch at the front underside of the kit to help ensure hands stay behind the muzzle. Note also that there is a fair amount of space internally above the slide so with AR style sights the line of sight is 3.5 inches above the muzzle. For close range precision shots, shooters should adjust their hold accordingly.

The wrist brace is attached to the rear of the RONI system and is designed to interface with your arm (not function as a stock).

The RONI Kit also features ambidextrous Quick Detach (QD) sling swivel attachment points fore and aft for convenience of carry. I found that a single point sling attached to the rear point made the pistol very easy to carry and place into use quickly. On the right side of the kit there is a large ejection port to ensure reliable operation. The arm brace itself is narrow and unobtrusive and does not add a lot of bulk to the kit. It is made from a hard rubber that is very sturdy and includes a Velcro strap to attach it to the arm.

Attaching the brace to the arm can be done in one of two ways. First, the arm can be placed through the middle of the brace and then secured using the strap. Alternatively, and the method I found to be more comfortable, faster and just as steady, is to place the arm on one side or the other of the brace and use the strap to secure it.

Hands On

Installing the kit took about 10 minutes the first time I did it and five minutes the second time. It was very straightforward and simple and does not require any pistol disassembly. Simply remove the locking pins, pull out the front and rear locking assemblies, and open the clamshell kit by rotating down.

Next, place the charging handle firmly on the rear of the slide of your pistol and insert the pistol. As the barrel shroud makes contact with the front of the pistol it is adjustable to accommodate for length between the compact Glock 19 and full-size Glock 17. Once the clamshell is closed up simply push the front and rear and caps back in and secure them with the locking pins. There are two additional screws at the bottom that will need to be tightened to complete the installation.

The ejection port allows clearance as the slide cycles and ejects the fired case.

The added surface area makes the pistol easier to handle in many ways and the extra weight virtually eliminates recoil, which is not that much to begin with on the 9mm Glock 19 that I tested in it. The ability to easily add optics also increases the shooters’ accuracy. The kit alone, before you add optics, gun, ammo, or sling, weighs just over three pounds and measures a full 22 inches in length.

For testing, I mounted an EO Tech Holosight and 3X magnifier as well as back-up folding Iron sights from Samson Manufacturing. I also added a Surefire G2X Pro Tactical flashlight with a max 320 lumens to the left side of the kit with easy rear pushbutton activation. Anyone looking for a bit of extra firepower can also opt for the ProMag 32 round magazine. The kit did not at all interfere with the functioning of the pistol and worked flawlessly.

For those not familiar with CAA (Command Arms Accessories) it is an Israeli company that manufactures a wide range of high-quality tactical firearms accessories for the Israeli and other militaries as well as law enforcement agencies around the globe. Fortunately for the rest of us, we can also purchase the same gear as the pros.

I am issuing six packs of beer that ALL commenters will be required to keep in their cars. You will be able to drink them but not while in your vehicle and not while impaired. I am only doing this because I have trust and absolute confidence in your integrity and behavior. Okay?
So IF ATF trusts people will handle firearms the way they like then what the hell is all this goofy regulation about? Weird.
Actually I still wrestle with ATF dictating the way firearms are to be discharged by the end user? I had thought they regulated the hardware (firearms) based on the NFA…………apparently they also regulate the way I can handle or discharge a firearm? This is regulating behavior and I am NOT talking about the behavior of someone materially changing a firearm by cutting a barrel or making it into a machine gun.
Really screwed up when ATF and the lawyers can not figure it out and then ALL the crazy gunnies who know the 22,000 gun laws start trying to make heads or tails of it. What a mess.

I don’t get it. Without a legal shoulder stock, all I see is a bigger, bulkier, heavier, more cumbersome pistol with no more effective accuracy that will be slower into action and more difficult to conceal. It doesn’t even have a decent fore grip of any surface of any kind for the support hand. And to top it all off, it costs as much or more than the pistol, before all the lights lasers, optics, etc., are added. Looks like a mall ninja money pit to me.
Now if it was a kit to quickly and inexpensively turn a Glock into a legal bull-pup style 16″ barrel weapon at a reasonable price (noticeably less than the cost of the pistol) weight in weight with good purchase and quick handling, that might have appeal for those needing that type of semi-auto (semi-auto Uzi) at a lessor price. Especially in full size glock frames and serious calibers like 10MM, 357 SIG, 45 ACP.
    Otherwise, why bother?

Sorry bad guys, I will be shouldering for all encounters. Would rather be alive and able to fight with the ATF afterwards. In all manners of life an emergency trumps law.

    • Junior February 19, 2017, 12:38 pm

I’d rather be judged by 12 then carried by 6!

  • Jay February 6, 2017, 8:33 am

That’s a lot of change for a fancy cover for a glock to look like something it is not! It doesn’t make it a carbine because the barrel length hasn’t changed it’s just a pistol disguised as a carbine inside a carbine looking wrapper! I guess that also would depend on what you think of as a carbine too!

  • segian February 6, 2017, 7:03 am

Why bother just buy a Mechtech ccu and get a real Glock carbine. Hell it is even less expensive. http://mechtechsys.com/

    • Greg February 6, 2017, 9:13 am

+1. Recently got one for my G19. Crazy accurate and a ball to shoot

      • godfrey daniel February 6, 2017, 2:48 pm

Greg: Been looking @ these for my G17 but I’ve seen reviews where they’re not really any more accurate than the pistol it self. Do you think they’re worth the expense? Thx.

  • Some guy in CT February 6, 2017, 6:43 am

Yea, it’s kinda crazy that ATF would drop a caveat on something like this “oh you can have it, but don’t let me catch you shouldering it!!” Will you risk being the guy in prison having to explain to the murderers and extortionists that your doing time for using your arm brace as a shoulder stock, thus taking the heat off the guy in for tearing the label off his mattress.

    • Another guy in CT February 6, 2017, 8:41 am

      Too true!
Maybe GunsAmerica wrote this piece for us to pick it apart…

    • Michael Keim February 6, 2017, 11:33 am

I can’t believe someine would use one of these “arm braces” as a makeshift stock. Oh my God, l’m so shocked! Lmao.

    • loupgarous February 6, 2017, 3:50 pm

“Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more… ” as Eric Idle’s character said on Monty Python. The problem being that BATFE is not a single person. It’s got a bunch of field offices, and a bunch of agents, all of whom have their own ideas on which way to fall off the regulatory fence on this issue. I’d rather not own a piece of gear that might give a BATFE agent a reason to decide I was constructively in possession of an NFA item without the right paperwork.

The answer isn’t jailbait like this or “non-NFA short barreled shotguns” or other regulatory headaches. It’s to get on the horn and urge your US representative and senators to consider repealing the NFA entirely. NFA doesn’t address the main issues law enforcement’s concerned about (large capacity mags, mostly) and was written when the nation’s main public safety threats were John Dillinger and his crew, and Bonnie and Clyde. And even at the time, the law addressed a hyped-up issue, not clear and present dangers to the people.

    Wake up folks..

This whole “Stabilizer Brace” nonsense is in fact a Trojan Horse.. A deep pit for Gun Owners and the Second Amendment..

Other than clearly unlawful activities.. When has the ATF engaged in telling people how to properly handle firearms and approved/illegal handling of firearms?

Just shouldering this half baked apparatus or one similar makes one a criminal..
    What?

That is the Booby Trap that has been laid here.. That is the Camel’s nose under the Tent.. That is the Trojan Horse..

The Powers behind/controlling/manipulating the ATF have expanded their power immensely by this.

Now understand your average ATF Officer likely as not does not understand or grasp the issue any more than you did.
Keep in mind they also find themselves manipulated all the time (Fast and Furious for example Local ATF was going “What the Heck?”) Manipulated by an elite who want to use the ATFs legitimate efforts for evil intentions.

Telling you today you may not physically manipulate this particular firearm configuration in a particular manner we say .. well seems stupid but OK.. Giving someone the power in the future to expand this and say .. You are handling this firearm in an unapproved fashion. This opens the door to banning .. Three Gun matches..rapid fire.. firing and moving, training as a group, Potentially all manner of more common activities.. Remember the current primary Anti-Gun methodology is one of encroachment.. incrementalism.. the Camels Nose..

Remember how hard we fought to educate the public that the Second Amendment was not about Duck Hunting ?
If you think about it a bit you can see how they are trying to work around your success.

Just realize they are saying how you may manipulate/handle a firearm. Now the Manufacturers of these “Stabilizer Braces” may or may not be aware that this trap and most importantly “Precedent” is being set. That is not the issue as much as the trap was set, executed and is being used to damage the Second Amendment.

Wake up!!!! The Ant-American,, Globalist Sacks who hate Liberty our Constitution and Bill of Rights.. With a special Loathing for the Second Amendment are committed to and always seeking ways of pulling your Liberty’s Teeth..

As the Admiral in Star Wars said a long time ago.. “Its a trap”

This major expansion of State Power.. really is.. “A trap”

If you believe in the Second Amendment and Liberty……Take the time to understand this and explain it to others .. get the word out about what’s really being done here..

    Vic
