Did the NRA Chief LaPierre Get Paid Million in 2015?

Recently headlines emerged that the NRA’s vice president and chief executive officer Wayne LaPierre was paid close to $5 million in 2015, a dollar amount that seems to undermine the grassroots nature of the gun rights group. But headlines can be misleading.

According to the Washington Post LaPierre earned just over $1 million in 2015. The other amount was a retirement payout for over 30 years of employment with the NRA.

“The NRA is transparent in its finances and in its reporting of the required Form 990,” said NRA President Allan Cors. “This is an employee funded deferred compensation plan and the $3.7 million distribution to Wayne LaPierre was required by federal law and properly reported.”

Some were also quick to point out that even a $1 million salary is low by organizational standards and that typically CEOs earn a significantly higher percentage — between 4 and 5 percent of the revenue — even non-profit CEOs. A $1 million annual salary is standard for executives at openly-traded companies and that’s before all forms of bonuses, not including retirement payouts.

“This is extraordinarily well-deserved compensation for Wayne’s almost four decades of service in protection of our American freedom,” said Cors, “and it represents tremendous value for NRA members and our nation’s gun owners.”

In recent years the NRA earned a gross revenue of between $300 and $400 million dollars, typically around $340 million a year before expenses. The NRA takes in around $100 million per year in donations and holds just over $100 million in assets.

With help from supporters, the NRA has fought for gun rights on local and national levels fiercely, particularly in the years following the fall of the assault weapons ban. Following the election of President Donald Trump, the NRA is doubling down on their efforts and is “set to go on offense.”

“For the first time in almost a decade, the NRA is shifting from a defensive stance to a pro-active stance,” said NRA spokeswoman Jennifer Baker. “We’re going from defense to offense. Now, we have a pro-Second Amendment Congress and a pro-Second Amendment president who will sign pro-Second Amendment legislation. That’s a huge shift.”

Right now the NRA is focused on two national-level priorities. The gun rights group is looking to roll back Obama-enacted executive orders restricting gun rights and availability as well as continue promoting the Hearing Protection Act.

Still, when gun rights are at stake, is a million-dollar salary too much? What do you think?

    Wayne LaPierre is underpaid

  • Mickey February 27, 2017, 10:56 pm

Exec. VP of the NRA for life Wayne “The Sleek Beaver” LaPierre is stepping down? Was there a palace coup? IWas the $5M “retirement” bribe the pre-condition for the NRA membership getting the reins out of his grasping mitts & regaining control of their organization? All you idiots defending him, please allow me to sell you this nifty bridge I have right over here… This is the best news for the NRA I’ve heard in 2 decades! I may actually vote again this year! =8-D

  • Jo Ann February 19, 2017, 2:11 pm

Most of this comment section is embarassing. If you men were face-to-face, would you have made the same inflamatory comments, name-calling, and insults. I doubt it. Hopefully the antigun crowd won’t see this rediculous display and gain succor from it. Man Uo and Grow Up.

    • Gerald February 19, 2017, 7:28 pm

      Ann,

      They are the antigun crowd.

      • Tom Horn February 20, 2017, 8:54 am

        Ann,

I am deeply ashamed. When GunsAmerica ran a story that the CMP may have surplus 1911’s for purchase, they had 78 respondents crying, “I want one, where’s mine, gimme, gimme, gimme. When we have folks tearing down the NRA, a bulldog guardian at the gate of our 2A Rights for the past 50 years (although not a perfect one), a group instrumental in just delivering us from a Hillary Supreme Court pick, we only get a handful of folks defending her.

When GunsAmerica allows complete freedom speech on this forum, it allows abusive anti-2A trolls, and abusive bullies to post any inflammatory rhetoric they choose. Bullies and tyrants should never be tolerated. “First they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak out because I was not a Jew…” Putting down bullies is not a pretty sight, and I am sorry you have to witness that, but it has to be done. If the moderators of this sight are not going to screen out bullies and trolls, it is up to us, the users of this sight.

For everyone. Let your logic and reason stand on its own. If it is sound, and more logical and reasonable than the other persons argument, you have won the argument. No need for abusive name calling, etc.

        • Gerald February 20, 2017, 5:22 pm

“No need for abusive name calling” LOL!, Then why do you do it. LOL You are something else Tom. You began name calling right off the bat.

You are a definite CTR shill. That’s not name calling if its the truth. You are accusing others of your actions, and that makes you also a hypocrite. I posted things regarding the history of the NRA’s actions. You attacked me for doing that.

People who are acting in a negative way when they are outwardly appearing another way in the gun world are known as Fudds. Its common knowledge. If you weren’t one of those people then why did you respond to my initial post? I put forth now that you are in fact ONE of those very people, because of your action. You outed yourself as a Fudd.

Now you wish to cry about it and attempt to garner sympathy. This is called concern trolling. You are good Tom, but you aren’t that good.

Thanks for the fun. Dishonesty never wins in the end.

  • Link Lackluster February 18, 2017, 9:55 pm

He is worth it. The unsophisticated or naive people who don’t understand the difficulties of running a large organization or don’t grasp what is at stake, have no appreciation for effective executive leadership. Probably just ignorant rubes jealous of a salary that is well-deserved. Too bad. Get some learnin’.

    • vincent smith February 19, 2017, 1:22 pm

YOU PEOPLE ARE GETTING JUST LIKE CONGRESS . THERE IS NO WAY WAYNE IS WORTH THAT KIND OF MONEY.IVE BEEN SENDING YOU MONEY FOR OVER 50 YEARS AND SOMETIMES WHEN I COULDNT AFFORD IT AND I THINK ITS DISGUSTING THAT WAYNE IS GETTING PAID THAT KIND OF MONEY. YOUR OPERATING A LOT LIKE THE CLINTONS CHARITY YOUR ACTUALLY WORSE BECAUSE WE ( THE MEMBERS TRUSTED YOU TO DO THE RIGHT THING) AND ITS ALL ABOUT FILLING YOUR OWN POCKETS. ILL ADVERTISE FOR YOU.

    • Kalashnikov Dude February 19, 2017, 3:36 pm

The trouble is the NRA is fighting a fight that serves only the insider lobby, and lawyers themselves. Their brand of fighting, allows for FFLs to keep illegal lists of gun owners because the letter of the law says the federal government cant keep list like that. The NRAs brand allows for FFLs to charge individual for facilitating what is supposed to be a private transaction between two private parties, exchanging money for private property. But what have they really done for you and me? They let due process slip by the wayside when Bill Clinton made misdeanor domestic violence convictions an automatic and irrevocable loss of your 2nd Amendment rights forevermore. The Hughes Amendment, tilted the precarious balance for good and all. Since 1986, the government can now restrict us from having the firearms they all use regularly. In the last decade or so, I cannot even get a reply when I aske em about that. Now, their gearing up for a fight to enact nation concealed carry reciprocity? Really? The 2nd Amendment is our concealed carry permit. That is exactly what keep and bear arms means, as in “the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” As I tried to explain earlier here, that is not and has not been the metric the NRA operates on. The NRA operates on the validation of twisted interpretations of the commerce act that all anti gun legislation has drawn its authority from for the lasy 80 years. For Criminy sake! Look it up for yourselves. While its still public knowledge……..

  • Gerald February 18, 2017, 5:44 pm

I will post this again, because a few liberal NRA defenders below objected to the truth and proceeded to personally attack me and attempt to change the flow of my comment by using a tactic called correct the record (CTR). CTR shills are everywhere these days. They are Democrats and Fake Republicans just like the Fake Media.

The NRA should have been on the offensive years ago. They are “set to go on offense”?? The NRA in my opinion is a bunch of hunting fudds who are in reality actually anti gun and anti freedom for regular people, much like the current Republican establishment who are Republican in name only (RINO).
The second amendment has nothing to do with hunting or just rifles. The NRA needs to be purged of the current leadership group like the way Trump needs to drain the swamp in Washington. Or what they should do in the interest of truth, and honesty in advertising change their name to the National Hunting Association (NHA).

  • Henauder Titzauf February 18, 2017, 9:58 am

Yes, the salary is low for our President(LaPierre). I really hate for him to leave us. I really hope the “opposition” doesn’t snatch him up to fight against us. He does know a lot of things that are critical to us and our organization. I wish him well, in health and in life, he does deserve it. As I have heard it well, you have served us, the members, very well. May GOD be with you always.

    • Jim February 18, 2017, 12:24 pm

A million dollar salary is wrong considering the added fringe benefits. If your working people’s you should have a people’s salary

  • alex February 18, 2017, 9:20 am

what’s the big deal, wayne put 30 years of his life into the NRA and even though he wasn’t always popular he tried his best.i work for a major company in the US, and i know of shift foreman who retired with over 2 plus million in the 401k’s and then had a huge pension on top of that, so in today’s world were your only bringing home about 8 cents on the dollar,3.7 million is not that much, happy retirement wayne!!

  • Jonny5 February 18, 2017, 4:51 am

The Lord Baby Jesus if he was alive today would vote for this guy. He’s a modern day gun saint protecting us from the Muslimists and God hating Middle East.

    • bdgben February 18, 2017, 5:41 pm

The problem is not that the people of the Middle East do not love god. The problem is that they love god too much. It is the idiotic obsession with their god which drives all religious wackos, whether Christian, Muslim, or Hindu, to behave like primitive animals. Religion is an opiate. It numbs the mind, negates critical thinking and places hope in false places. There are far more entertaining fantasy books than the bible or the koran.

  • Tom Horn February 18, 2017, 4:15 am

Gerald, or should we call you, Your Royal, Looking-Down-On-Us-Mere-Mortals-From-Above, Superior, Highness.
The NRA started as a sportsman organization to teach rifle marksmanship. It wasn’t until the National Firearms Act of 1934 that it took up informing it’s members about firearms related legislation. The NRA’s focus was mostly on target shooters/hunters until the passage of the Gun Control Act of 1968, when many people woke up to the threat to our 2A Rights.

It was not until the mid-1970’s when the political/legislative arms of the NRA were formed, the Political Victory Fund, and the Institute for Legislative Action. The NRA has made some (perhaps bad) compromises at times, and failed at other times, but they have done much good (Wayne deserves a $5 million bonus for McDonald Vs Chicago, alone). I think you need a “It’s a Wonderful Life,” awakening. Your fancy pearl handled 1911 might be in Hillary’s trash compacter by now, if not for the NRA and the 2nd Amendment Foundation. By the way, what are you doing to support our 2A Rights, besides tearing down those trying to defend them?

    • Tom Horn February 18, 2017, 4:15 am

      Oh, yeah, FUDD this, pal!

    • Gerald February 18, 2017, 7:20 am

Where did you copy and past that from? I brought up “facts” that have happened in history and you bring up some “feeling” and try to make excuses. You insult me and probably because you ARE a Fudd and are threatened by someone portraying your organization in the correct and proper light. So sad.

I originally brought up facts. You have nothing but feelings and it appears hurt feelings at that. Your post is funny.

Pearl? You fail at insult 101. ROFL

      • Tom Horn February 18, 2017, 12:20 pm

It is easy to criticize the mistakes of the past (or maybe you would spell it the, “paste”), through the eyes of the today, when you are not wearing the blinders of the past (social norms/mores/fears/values, etc). It was not until the Kennedy assassinations, Watergate, the Vietnam War, and and, legislation like the GCA of 1968 that Americans started to question the motives of our Federal Government. We had just come out of WWII, were all pulling together, a not many felt their 2A rights were threatened.

But thanks for blessing us with your holy presence. I still believe the NRA has accomplished many great, “emotions,” as you would call them, like, McDonald Vs Chicago. If you are so, superior to all of us, perhaps you could educate, instead of insulting and Fudd-ing everyone you disagree with.

        • Gerald February 18, 2017, 5:33 pm

Making excuses again. You don’t get points for feelings and trying.

They screwed the pooch and they have to own it. Your butt hurt is funny.

Your anger toward me is fun to read. Just like a liberal, you attack the person who points out a wrong. Attack away Tom. Post more of your vitriolic garbage for all to see. LOL

          • Tom Horn February 19, 2017, 1:38 pm

            Gerald,

When I asked you, ” By the way, what are you doing to support our 2A Rights, besides tearing down those trying to defend them?” All I got back was your, ‘feelings.’ You said I failed at insults, and I guess I am just not as practiced at it as you are. I have never found insults a sound strategy in dealing with social situations.

You don’t put much stock in, ‘feelings,’ or, emotions. Emotions are an important part of the limbic system. It is the part of the brain that helps us navigate the pratfalls of Darwinism, giving us the, ‘fight or flight’ response, it is where intuition resides, and it set-off our B.S. detector. Control of our emotions helps us navigate social situations, so we don’t appear a bull in a china shop, being obnoxious and insulting everyone.

I suggest you take a hard look at some of your posts on this page. When ever someone disagrees with your point of view you insult them, calling them a, FUDD. This is bullying behavior. Bullying is a manifestation of emotional insecurity. I suggest you work on your emotional IQ. Then switch out your icon with a pic of your bake-lite slabbed, SA Army Colt, with the ruby-eyed long horn on the side, change your name to Jerry, or something, and come back and play nice with the other kids in the sandbox.

          • Gerald February 20, 2017, 5:29 pm

            Tom,
Very sad behavior. You began the personal attacks. I made some observations about the NRA history and in an attempt to discredit me and make the NRA look better you attacked me. Sad very sad.

  • David Brawley February 17, 2017, 9:36 pm

For me it comes down to this: Trump won and Hillary lost. I’m not sure any semblance of the 2nd Amendment would have survived another Democratic/progressive/liberal regime. The fact that our NRA supported Donald Trump early and vigorously tells me that our dues were well spent and that our organization did what we wanted and expected it to do

  • Terry Garland February 17, 2017, 9:30 pm

Wayne Lapierre has done a tremendous job as CEO, he really was worth ten times that amount. LEAVE HIM ALONE. Lets just hope that the next CEO of the NRA is just half as good as Wayne. As a Benefactor Life Member of the NRA, all I can say is “Wayne I will certainly miss you”. The rest of the liberals need to just shut up.

  • Campbell A King February 17, 2017, 4:18 pm

NRA member since way the hell back and going no where..25 or 35 a yr ain’t much for the good they do..The laPear fellow runs a major outfit for us ..Lose them and see how long your gun rights last.

    • Winston February 17, 2017, 11:52 pm

Well, if you are depending on a non-elected lobbying organization to keep the Bill of Rights intact, you fail to see that you do not inalienable rights anyway. If the people who take the oath of office do not uphold the law, there is no law. That is where we are, but no Americans dare take on the Washington DC traitor government face to face. So, we pay the NRA. It’s called fooling yourself.

  • Ryne Linehan February 17, 2017, 3:45 pm

The salary is absurd. Of course he’s been doing it for 30 years, we will have to force him to leave at that salary. The retirement payment is absurd. Just another dishonest overpaid ceo feathering his nest. Like PT Barnum said there is a sucker born every minute, and a bunch of suckers are members of the NRA. They won’t ever get any more of my money. STUPID! There are many other pro gun organizations that are not corrupted.

  • James Eric February 17, 2017, 3:28 pm

    NRA member since ’95.
    Pay him!

  • Kalashnikov Dude February 17, 2017, 1:45 pm

This isnt about the compensation administrating lawyers recieve from non profits. The left and our supposed representatives in government will be more than happy to have every time limited news cycle keep the focus on this. Rather than asking from what standpoint our alleged representatives, along with such organizations as the NRA are representing us from. That draws scrutiny from the real issues. Harvard, Yale, every other pillar of education and collective knowledge in our civilization. These are where they come from. My point is they all know and understand whats really going on here. You people need to wake up and take responsibility for the nation you think is representing you, and tending to your interests from our borders and beyond, and from within. Its not. The proof is still public knowledge. But its not taught in public schools. Its not even so much as mentioned by anyone in our so called free press. It is something that must be sought relentlessly. If you want any kind of future for your kids and theirs, you had better put off those plans to skip work and spend the day watching the idiot box, in any of its myriad forms made so readily available for your unfetterd consumption. Start with a national history lesson. Ask questions and dig deeper. Then feel free to meet me back here and tell me to take off the tinfoil.

  • Chaz February 17, 2017, 12:31 pm

Worth every penny. Try and hire a CEO who is half as effective, and you will learn what the market is out there.

  • gary February 17, 2017, 11:55 am

to the common person it way too much, but you will not get a quality person for $55,000 a year that will take all the crap tha goes with the job and get it done with finesse

  • Larry February 17, 2017, 11:42 am

I had asked the NRA for a list of its officers and their annual salaries as this information is not available on their website. As an NRA member I was curious who was being paid and how much (e.g., president, vice-president, officers, board members, etc…). They sent me an NRA brochure. I’ll maintain my NRA membership but no additional contributions. I think I do more good calling or writing my representatives directly.

    • WhiteFalcon February 17, 2017, 12:33 pm

Just pull your panties out of your tail and think for one minute if that is possible. Whether you like it or nor, the NRA is the only gun oriented organization there is that has the size and membership and money to do the work they do. They may not always do exactly what you would like to see done, but they are always on the right track, which you are not. I have been an NRA member for almost 50 years now and this has always been the case. Were it not for the NRA, you would not be able to have a firearm of any sort right now, and this would be just another communist/NAZI/fascist country. There would be no freedom at all.

      • Gerald February 17, 2017, 12:55 pm

You Fudds are a fun bunch.

Did you get your panties in a bunch over Larrys comment about the NRA or the fact that he will continue to call and write letters to his representatives. WhiteFalcon, you are the problem. Attacking those that criticize a corrupt organization and people who try to contact their elected representatives to effect change could be considered cowardly and very liberal.

The NRA is not always on the right track. Your comments and braggadocios comment about being a long time member are laughable. Keep up the humor, because the more you make comments like those, the more fun you give those who read them. Very funny.

        • Boss February 17, 2017, 9:42 pm

Gerald, spoken like a true progressive.
          Divide and conquer.
looks like the libtards won this battle.
They find a good man or woman, say something bad about them and other libtards crawl out of the woodwork and back them up. Thus destroying the good guy’s reputation.

          • Gerald February 18, 2017, 7:10 am

Haha! You sound like a liberal.

You bring up something that I didn’t even mention. I never mentioned the salary. I brought up the “fact” that the NRA is a bunch of do nothing RINO Fudds. You and a couple of other people have attacked me with your hurt feelings.

Attacking someone with your feelings IS a liberal thing. You are yet another liberal to out themselves in this posting. Keep it up. LOL its great. I thank you.

  • Alan February 17, 2017, 11:27 am

If ya’ll want to bitch about it, Start your own Gun oriented organization, put up with the foul and vile hate that will surely be directed at you and YOUR FAMILY, work your ass off and travel a lot away from family, and be prepared to put up with your own organizations members being cry baby arm chair Q.B.’s and giving you hell.
The man is highly educated, and could get that money from any big firm. getting and RETAINING good people is the NUMBER ONE problem in any big organization.
And another thing, look at the salary of folks with PETA, HSUS (what a farce!) and other organizations.
    We got Wayne cheap.

    • Gerald February 17, 2017, 11:50 am

Just what a Fudd would say. Fudd much?

Your comment is bad and you should feel bad. Do you reaaly know anything about what has happened while the NRA has sat around on their hands since the 1934 NFA was passed. Do you know what the 1968 GCA is? Do you have any idea what the 1986 FOPA did? I imagine not because you have an agenda and you are a Fudd. So sad.

      • Kalashnikov Dude February 17, 2017, 1:21 pm

        On the money Gerald!

        • Alan February 17, 2017, 2:45 pm

Aww, did I hurt your wittle feelwings???
What the hell does the GCA and NFA have to do with La Pierre’s tenure??????
H wasn’t around when they were passed, and had to work within the limits of OTHER NRA hierarchy members and what they wanted to do. And need I mention Political reality, which escapes many Gunnies.
          A FUDD?!?
You’re an ass. and typical of many of the know it all’s who may know the laws, but who’s Political savvy is non existent.
          Schmuck.

          • Gerald February 17, 2017, 3:43 pm

If you noticed hurt feelings it were yours, lol. You liberals like to point out deficiencies that you possess. \

And all of your immediately above comments are extremely RINO, Fuddlike. You like John McCain and Lindsey Graham too, I suppose. LOL. Everything I mentioned above that you don’t get, e.g. the NFA, GCA, FOPA were examples of systematic problems with a Fudd driven NRA. You make the case I entered above even stronger by typing your tired response. It was fun to read. You have completely outed yourself. Thank you.

Next you will say: “I support the second amendment, but…”

            ROFL Thank you

        • Gerald February 17, 2017, 3:45 pm

Thanks, I also enjoyed your posts.

          • Alan February 17, 2017, 5:26 pm

Lets see just how smart you really are.
I’m a Constitutional conservative, so you missed there.
National carry should be just that, no B.S. paperwork.
I have several “black rifles”, so you missed there too.
One is even an 80% lower. Oops, you’ve really missed there, eh?
McCain should be kicked out of the GOP, and Graham is senile. missed again.
Outed?? No, just didn’t match up to your standards.
BTW, YOUR comment was completely out of context, by not relating to the subject matter.
So your comprehension levels are crap, just like your manners.
You read into posts that which is not there, go off subject, and then make asinine comments as though you know someone. In other words, a smart ass know it all.
            Rude, crude and socially unacceptable.
you must be fun in mixed company.

          • Gerald February 18, 2017, 5:37 pm

Alan, I don’t think your fake accomplishments are needed.

You don’t like that someone pointed out that the NRA is full of Fudds that have a liberal agenda. So you attack that person and try to change the narrative of the conversation. Its called CTR shill, own up up the fact now people know you by the name of what you are. Haha LOL.

            Alan the CTR shill.

  • Lawrence Lucas February 17, 2017, 10:57 am

$1,000,000 per year is excessive when members are being asked to pay annual dues on top of the phone calls asking for more donations. In my opinion, $500,000 and the benefits described would be more than generous for this particular job. I have no doubt many, many CEOs more competent that LaPierre who believe in defending the Second would gladly step up for the role and a salary and benefits of $500,000. How many members are at the poverty level in income yet freely donate to help our membership collectively fight those who would steal our Second Amendment rights? More than a few. Cut the salary and put more into court cases defending our rights. $100,000,000 in assets for a national organization is a comfortable cushion. Invested, that produces easily $5,000,000 to be used for the organization. We are not Wall Street. We are 5,000,000 people trying to keep the government from stealing our rights. LaPierre is a good man who has done good work, but the salary and benefits are excessive for a grassroots organization. Jealous of his salary? No. But I do not think it is good stewardship of our resources.

  • Kalashnikov Dude February 17, 2017, 10:46 am

The NRA took my dues for a lot of years. They took my donations as well. 1986 happened. 1994 happened. Then the compromises. Background checks, private transactions being recorded, and illegal lists of gun owners are being held by FFLS available to the federal government at their whim. All during the NRAs watch, on my faithful donations and dues. Now its just a bunch of establishment politicians and lawyers. Sorry, thats how it is. Im looking to put my money and support anywhere else at this point.

  • Gerald February 17, 2017, 10:42 am

The second amendment has nothing to do with hunting or just rifles. The NRA needs to be purged of the current leadership group like the way Trump needs to drain the swamp in Washington. Or what they should do in the interest of truth, and honesty in advertising change their name to the National Hunting Association (NHA).

After 40 years of service him retirement package is less than most executives for any organization or Business. When your gun rights are gone like they are in the UK or Australia, or Mexico, or China to name a few, you will wish you had give more. Life Member, sponsoring my whole family.

    • Kalashnikov Dude February 17, 2017, 10:56 am

I got news for you. There isnt a single politician or lawyer at the NRA that operates on the letter of our 2nd Amendment. That metric has been abandoned completely. Dont belive me? look it up. They all validate the last 80 years of gun legislation that ignores the letter of our 2nd Amendment and draws authority instead from twisted bastardizations of the Commerce Act instead. They know this and try to fool people into believing they are fighting for our 2nd Amendment. It is a lie.

Personally I don’t feel it is excessive. Look at CEO’s all across the board. How much money do auto maker CEO and Execs make? Do you sell your cars and walk everywhere because they make too much? What about the ones who used bailout money to give themselves bonuses? As previously mentioned, what about nonprofit organizations? 3.7 million in retirement pay out for nearly 40yrs isn’t really out of line either. I know people who have put in same time and received similar amounts that were regular employees at businesses. Lets be honest, people give to the NRA to fight for their second amendment rights for them. You are hiring them to work for you. Do you want someone who does a great job that gets paid well for their work or someone who does a mediocre job defending your rights? Those of you comparing him to the POTUS, the POTUS gets paid for the rest of his life(except maybe for Trump?), secret service, healthcare and much more. Not a legit comparison.

Ever think this might be a way for the left to start a war within the NRA? Get most members fired up over a salary paid to an executive member! Well it’s a great way I think for the left to divide and conquer. I’ve been a Life member since 1975. Annual member before that. Does any of this bother me? No! Keep the NRA strong! Stay focused on the issues. Remember it’s the Democratic Party who is our enemy. They are the ones who attack gun owners. They are the ones who pass legislation to restrict our rights to the 2nd Amendment. Want a battle? Then let’s continue our battle against liberals and democrats.q

  • Mike February 17, 2017, 9:58 am

    Good value!
One of the hardest working advocates of our gun rights.
Have you seen how much the CEOs of the companies that work to dismantle our Second Amendment rights make?

  • Michael Dugas February 17, 2017, 9:49 am

Considering all that the NRA did during the ‘dark ages’, i.e. 2008 to 2016, it was money well-paid, even if it was his retirement.

He earned it all by keeping that major troll off of the gun owner’s backs.

God bless him and his; may he rest comfortably in retirement!

  • Mister Ronald February 17, 2017, 9:22 am

This guy has earned his money and five million is pretty cheap for the work he has done over the years.
At least he ain’t been stealing the money like most of them do in other organizations.
Like it said, That is “NOT” his paycheck but out of a retirement fund.
Nothing hidden here and N.R.A. does have open books that tells anyone that wants to know, where the money goes.
Think long and hard before you decide to quit the N.R.A. and “DO” remember how hard the N.R.A. fought for the 2nd. amendment rights of all gun owners.

  • B. E. Stanley February 17, 2017, 9:05 am

So? A million per yr. isn’t excessive? The President of the US of A makes 50% of that sum, yes $500,000.00 per yr. I submit to all that his job is one hell of a lot more daunting than a CEO’s. What isn’t mentioned here is what the “total” compensation will be so, there really is no way to compare apples to persimmons is there? What ever the market will tolerate is a reasonable amount. My thoughts are the amount of NRA’s CEO is excessive. Would you work for $1,000,000.00 per year?

    • deanbob February 17, 2017, 9:51 am

I think an equally important question is, “How effective was the CEO in meeting the goals and challenges set for him/her?” To that question, I don’t think there’s much doubt that the CEO and the NRA has successfully fought back to prevent gun control advocates from being successful through education and exposing the masses to the truth.

    • DRAINO February 17, 2017, 10:05 am

The POTUS is also a public servant who gets ALOT MORE than $5 million per year considering all the perks he gets….FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE for only 4 or 8 years of service. OH! And BTW, not just for him, but his FAMILY TOO!!!! So you are trying to compare apples to WHALES. Look at the whole picture, compare the NRA to similar orgs and see that what Lapierre got (for 30+ yrs of service) was nothing out of the ordinary. And considering what they do and how successful they have been, I’d say it’s on the LOW end of the scale. You need to GIVE UP the democrat notion that it’s EVIL for someone to be successful and make money. Just because someone makes more money than you and/or you are jealous of that fact doesn’t mean they are wrong or evil. Get over yourself and your liberal notions.

      • C. Aldridge February 17, 2017, 4:19 pm

You should check your facts. It is the senators and representatives who get the lifetime salaries/retirement. The president gets a salary while in office, but, when he leaves, he gets $1 million to start up his library. No retirement payments. Trump is not taking a salary while he is president. You can bet BHO did.

        • DRAINO February 18, 2017, 4:49 pm

          Afraid YOU are wrong Dumba$$.
          Presidential Pension Information
The retirement benefits received by former Presidents include a pension, Secret Service protection, and reimbursements for staff, travel, mail, and office expenses. The Presidential pension is not a fixed amount, rather it matches the current salary of Cabinet members (or Executive Level I personnel), which is $191,300/year as of March, 2008.

Seems YOU are the one who needs to check your facts. Step off, Moron.

          AMERICANISM!!!! NOT Globalism!!!!!

You can check the Internet and find numerous websites tracking the salaries of non-profit CEOs. If you do, you will learn that a $1M salary plus retirement for an organization as large as the NRA is not unusual. Given the size of the NRA both in membership and scope of operation; the number of years of service Mr. LaPierre has put in with the NRA; and all the organization does for hunters, sportsmen, and gun enthusiasts; I would say that his compensation is more than reasonable. I wish I was in a position to donate more to the NRA.

  • CountryLogic February 17, 2017, 7:36 am

No one is worth that kind of money unless they actually own the business.

  • Paul February 17, 2017, 7:16 am

If you want to get angry with CEO salaries, take a look at the way money is spent at some of the nation\’s non-profit charities. Start with the Susan Komen Breast Cancer group. I learned that of the hundreds of millions of dollars they raise each year, 60% of their revenues are spent on actual grants related to cancer research; while 35% of their revenues are spent on \”salaries, and costs of operation\”. It was reported that the CEO of this \”fund raising charity\” was receiving well over a million dollars a year in compensation, and benefits, while also hiring friends and relatives to \”work\” for the Foundation.
No doubt there are countless others with similar stories, but you\’ll run into a dead end trying to find out about them. Many are private, or do not report publicly their financials. The NRA has a daunting task. If our Second Ammendment right is lost, this country, and freedom is lost along with it. The liberal progressives must be squelched, if not rendered defunct completely to protect this nation from the very enigmatic future ahead. God Bless all you Freedom loving Patriots, and God Bless the USA!

Kind of changes my impression of the NRA. I knew it took a lot of money to fight court cases but where’s all the profit coming from?

  • Lance February 17, 2017, 3:49 am

Kind of has me wondering a little bit about where and how all of the donation money is actually being allocated? Personally I think it’s excessive in my opinion. I don’t know, I think all CEO’s get waaay too much money upon their retirements.

  • Beerman February 17, 2017, 3:37 am

How much radio or TV time could have been aired with that money? If someone offered me $5mil to promote gun rights I don’t know that I would say no, but is it really about the message or are we all just awful capitalists? I wonder what Charlton Heston pulled in when he was in that role?

    • DIYinSTL February 17, 2017, 9:11 am

Heston was not in that role; he was President just like Cors is today. I don’t know if the President even draws a salary. LaPierre is Executive VP and CEO; he runs the show as the Presidents, almost an honorary position, come and go.

  • Chick February 17, 2017, 3:07 am

$5 Million is too much salary for our Exec VP. That money needs to be spent educating people about 2nd Amendment rights.

    • Rex February 17, 2017, 9:41 am

5 mil isn’t LaPierre’s salary. His annual salary is around 1 mil. Did you read the article? Ostensibly no. Re-read the article!

    • Pat February 17, 2017, 10:10 am

Hell one million is not much money these day maybe 50 years ago it was He is well worth it

    • Harry February 17, 2017, 10:21 am

IT IS NOT A SALARY. $3.7m is a deferred pension, a one time payment, both legal and moral. His worth is in the results. Look were we are today versus in the 1980’s. The NRA has helped hold back a tidal wave of anti-gun vitriol and La Pierre has been leading the defense all that time. The time span has enabled him to build the contacts in the Congress as well as the States that have given him the ability to be so effective in advocating for our 2nd Amendment rights.
