President Barack Obama used to be the National Rifle Association’s public enemy number one. But I’d argue that his days of carrying that dubious honor are numbered, if not, already gone.
The NRA has a new primary political target in its crosshairs: Hillary Rodham Clinton, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.
While a lot can happen between now and the 2016 election, the smart money is on Bill-ary. She’s well-known by constituents, well-heeled (thanks to Wall Street bankers and her husband’s international non-profit organizations) and well established within the Democratic party, which is why the NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre is on the attack.
In LaPierre’s speech at the 2015 Annual Meetings & Exhibits, he absolutely hammered Hillary.
“Do we really want to put the country through another Clinton term of scandal and deceit and self-serving behavior?” asked LaPierre on Friday.
“She will not bring a dawn of new promise and opportunity,” LaPierre continued. “Hillary Rodham Clinton will bring a permanent darkness of deceit and despair, forced upon the American people to endure.”
LaPierre went on to list all the Clinton scandals, using the suffix “gate” after each one:
White House coffee-gate.
Web Hubble hush money-gate.
After recounting the list, LaPierre quipped, “Hillary Clinton has more gates than a South Texas cattle ranch.”
LaPierre concluded with a promise to the NRA faithful.
“I vow on this day, NRA members will stand shoulder to shoulder with you and with good, honest, decent Americans,” said LaPierre. “We will stand and we will fight with everything we’ve got and, in 2016, by God, we WILL elect our next great president of these United States and it will not be Hillary Rodham Clinton!”
