NYC Gun Permits May Come with Surgeon-General Type Warning

Just how far off its rocker is New York City when it comes to gun ownership?

The City Council Public Safety Committee voted Monday 6-1 on a measure that would require NYPD to hand out written warnings about the dangers of gun ownership to prospective permit applicants.

“Just like the [Surgeon General’s] warning that you see on the side of cigarette packs have changed the perception of smoking, these gun warnings are the first step to changing the public’s conversation,” said co-sponsor Councilwoman Vanessa Gibson in an interview with the New York Post.

“We would be one of the first major jurisdictions to enact this type of legislation,” she added.

LOL.  This is insane.  What exactly do they plan on putting on these warning?

Gibson, a Democrat from the Bronx, didn’t exactly say but according to the NY Post she pointed to studies that suggest there is a link between gun ownership and higher rates of suicide and domestic violence.

If we’re going to play that statistics game, here’s one of merit.  In 2013, the CDC reached the following conclusion on the frequency of defensive gun uses (DGUs). Instances where a good guy uses a gun to stop the commission of a crime.

Defensive uses of guns by crime victims is a common occurrence, although the exact number remains disputed. Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million per year, in the context of about 300,000 violent crimes involving firearms in 2008.

(That was back in 2013 when Obama was in the White House. Barry wasn’t exactly a champion of the 2A.)

What we have here is an unavoidable truth. Law-abiding citizens use firearms to defend themselves, their families and their property every day in this country.  And they do it more than criminals use guns to perpetrate crime. Though the council may not want to admit it, the net effect is that guns save lives.

Putting warnings on gun permit applications is stupid.  The law-abiding folk who are applying for permits aren’t the creeps abusing women or gangbangers shooting up the neighborhood.

A small number of criminals is responsible for perpetrating the majority of violence in a city.  We know this because (A) it’s common sense and (B) cities have started paying these thugs not to commit crimes.

Think I’m crazy?  Upon recognizing that 28 miscreants were responsible for 70 percent of gun-related assaults or homicides in 2009, city leaders in Richmond, California reached out to those individuals offering them a $1,000 monthly stipend to keep a clean nose.

The result of the program?  Since 2007 the city has managed to reduce firearm-related homicides by 76 percent and firearm-related assaults by 66 percent.

We can’t let a few bad apples ruin the entire bunch.  We can’t lawmakers scare good people from exercising their right to keep and bear arms.

This warning has nothing to do with increasing the public’s self-reliance and personal preparedness and everything to do with keeping up the ruse that we need a “Safety Council” to keep us safe.

The full Council will vote on this measure in the near future.  We’ll keep you posted.

The warning should say something like: “Warning. Dirtbags who threaten my life, family or others I care about, will be at a minimum severely injured and at a maximum dead. Screw with me at your own peril.”

I saw a can of salmon with a label “contains product known to the State of California to cause cancer”. Glad I live in Kansas.

Cigarette packages in Brazil carry graphic photos of rotted organs and surgical scars. Maybe the pistol box could carry the image of a bullet wound.

In The Commiewealth of Massachusetts, we already get a separate piece of paper from the Attorney General with every handgun purchase . It’s a warning on the evils of guns and how more than 200,000 will be stolen from owners each year, more than 1,000 suicides by younger children and teenagers who have access to guns, hundreds die from accidental discharge, and if you don’t keep it locked up and its used in a shooting, you are liable. Also, when being checked into The University of MA hospital, you are asked if you are a gun owner. The antis are trying to push gun ownership under health care so they can have yet another control over ownership!

How about a label describing the dangers of NOT owning and carrying a gun?!

  • Mike H. November 4, 2017, 1:01 pm

If God was going to give the world an enema,He would stick the tube in N.Y.City!

  • Mike H. November 4, 2017, 12:30 pm

They should put a label on their foreheads that states: Warning: Residing In New York City greatly increases Your risk of becoming an Extreme Dumbass!

  • Rocky November 4, 2017, 10:26 am

Putting a warning on a cigarette pack never struck me as a deterrent in the least, I quit because I was sick and damned tired of giving the government my money. They find enough other means of stealing it from me, I’m not going to voluntarily consent to funding their thieving wasteful habits.

  • BRASS November 3, 2017, 7:45 pm

I don’t care what happens in NYC. If you’re dumb enough, deluded enough or so jaded that you choose to live in NYC and make no attempt to leave….. You deserve what you get.

I consistently fall back to the warning on automotive paint when I was painting cars in the 70s. It was nice to use product marked: “For use only by trained and authorized personnel. Not for sale or use by the general public.” I also like the above suggestion that firearms may contain lead. Eating lead is not recommended.

  • KMacK November 3, 2017, 2:25 pm

Hilarious. The only firearms used in the truck attack were those of the NYPD. The terrorist had no firearms and used a truck to do all the damage. So…what do we do? Add more firearm regulations! What a bunch of one-trick-pony idiots.

You can read the New York City pistol permit application and related instructions here:
    https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/nypd/downloads/pdf/permits/HandGunLicenseApplicationFormsComplete.pdf
    http://newyorkcityguns.com/getting-a-nyc-handgun-permit/
Now, do you really think Donald Trump, Michael Bloomberg, Chuck Schumer or any of the other elites with the coveted permit actually filled out all those forms and jumped through the hoops to get their licenses?

For most residents, I suspect this is simply a $400+ non-refundable exercise in futility. Which the friendly officer won’t tell you until he has collected the two separate checks or money orders.

Handguns in the wrong hands can cause death and serious injury. That’s why a lot of us own them, so we can maybe keep those wrong hands from injuring us. By the way, if NYC takes murder so seriously, when was the last time they sent a murderer to the chair?

How can grown-up people with big paychecks actually believe this stuff?

  • BUURGA November 3, 2017, 1:09 pm

What really needs a warning label are the people who run for office today.

  • Flight-ER-Doc November 3, 2017, 12:30 pm

    OFFS…

  • Ziggy November 3, 2017, 11:38 am

Since when does New York City actually issue carry permits to anyone with or without a warning label. My understanding is that the only people who can obtain them are the rich, powerful and politically connected. I say this as a lifelong resident of the state and although I have not done anything to verify the allegation, I know that my carry permit from the rest of the state is not good in NYC.

  • Jesse James November 3, 2017, 11:15 am

NYC is a moronic, neo-liberal, globalist crap hole.

    • Harry November 3, 2017, 10:30 pm

HEY, Thats California, the complete state, sometimes referred to as septic tank of the world, also, Shithole of the world, and, sometimes, etc. etc. etc.

  • Alan November 3, 2017, 10:36 am

Those “studies” that linked gun ownership and suicide were debunked LOONG ago, where the hell are the cries of foul????
Notice that no “studies” were actually cited, and for that reason.
We have long known the opponents of the 2nd to be liars, and they just keep at it.
    What a crock.

  • joefoam November 3, 2017, 9:34 am

Yep, everyday at the quicky mart I see people carefully reading that warning on that pack of smokes. And by the way, how is it that the tobacco industry gets a pass on killing tens of thousands every year due to tobacco related illnesses, why isn’t it banned?

  • Cyrus November 3, 2017, 9:08 am

They should put the same labels on Cars – “Warning this vehicle can be used to kill people at your discretion – please operate it safely!”

    • Bushmaster November 3, 2017, 10:59 am

I think that come with the license contract one signes at the DMV.

    • Bushmaster November 3, 2017, 11:01 am

Make one wonder if the state or the DMV is reliable for these driver that inquired a license used to rent the vehicles?

  • Kris Colt November 3, 2017, 8:33 am

Hey Blannelberry, are you still planning on moving to that shit hole of a state?

    • S.H. Blannelberry November 3, 2017, 8:51 am

Yup. It looks like it’s definitely happening.

  • Gary November 3, 2017, 8:21 am

NOW I GET IT!! GREAT IDEA!!
REALLY! Look how many people labels have done to save already. A vast number of morons when you just use Blow Dryers alone!!
Really when was the last time you heard of a moron frying it’s self while using a blow fryer in a running shower? Been a long time, I know that much anyway! OR..from making toast in the bathtub? (Granted putting a foot long cord on them helped the most,) because when they took it back to the store to complain about the short cord, that’s when they were told it was to keep it out of their tub For Their OWN Safety!!
The ONLY problem I foresee in this is that they will have to hire Readers for every store. Not just one either..some stores like Wally World may need dozens of them!
See..Most people don’t even read labels! So just putting them on is of NO help, for certain.
Every dangerous product sold in the USA NEEDS a reader to tell them what they can and can’t do with anything that can harm them in ANY way.
I’m not kidding. I still hear of morons drinking drain cleaner! It’s clearly marked, but they do it anyway. So it HAS to be the Lack of a READER to make the label clear to them!
Come on NY, get your shit together! I just happen to live here. The last thing I need is a moron with a Gun, that can’t READ the damn warning label.

  • Pastor B Stevens November 3, 2017, 5:07 am

I read on a box of ammo recently … do not swallow ammunition …. WTF ? I guess some idiot actually swallowed ammo leading to some asinine lawsuit . NY as best I can tell by a couple family members whom lived there for over 20 years is pretty much a communist state . Their assinine laws are built to protect not citizens but lawmakers alone . Most of these freaks live in big city buildings so they feel safe high above their slaves . You could not pay me any amount of money to live in that sorry state . 🤔

    • Qhorse13 November 3, 2017, 1:01 pm

LIVE?? Hell I refuse to even VISIT that shithole of a state!! I can not begin to fathom why anyone would choose to live there. It makes NO sense to me. Taxes are so outrageous that you basically only get to keep 35-40 of what you work for every paycheck. Cost of living is so high it rediculous and the political realm there is so crooked anyone on politics is basically a criminal. Why on earth would anyone choose to live there??

  • Pat November 3, 2017, 4:27 am

More liberal brainwashing. Just one of a million small pieces to turn public opinion against the 2nd ammendment. Its a play straight out of the dictator’s handbook. One that the left has perfected and now has a stranglehond on media and education. Control what people see and learn and you control their minds. They won’t go door to door to confiscate guns. That would be the end of their very existence and they know it but what they are banking on is future generations after a century of programming, voluntarily giving up their rights and once public opinion has swayed enough ans the right elected ofdicials are put in the right places, having the 2nd ammendment errased. Its a threat that the right has completely failed to combat and address. We bitch about it amongst ourselves but we never call these tyrants out on their end game which they openly admit. We need to make out voices heard and make sure the rest of the population knows what the end game is. Once the 2nd falls, so to will the rest of our rights. Just think, as violent and intollerant as liberals are now, just imagine what it would be like if we didn’t have the 2nd.

  • Blue Dog November 1, 2017, 3:08 pm

I like this idea! While I think Councilwoman Gibbons has overstated the effect that the warning on the side of cigarette packs had in reducing smoking, clearly the warnings were one of many tools that were used in a very effective generations-spanning campaign to reduce risky behaviour by members of the general public. Certainly the parallels between the two inspire confidence that we can reduce gun violence in this country (except the tobacco industry was not shielded by the PLCAA). Maybe the government should require warnings on the sides of firearms and magazines! As a great man once said, Yes We Can!

    • Altoid November 3, 2017, 6:14 am

An even better idea would be for you to move to a country that already has banned private ownership of firearms. You’ll be happier and feel safer too. While you’re at it, be sure to renounce your US Citizenship. After all, you don’t want your name to be associated with such a dastardly country as the US. It’s a terrible, terrible place to live, especially with someone like Trump as president, don’t you agree?

A ban on private firearms ownership will never happen here. So moving to a country such as England or France would fit your belief system nicely.

    • Patriot November 3, 2017, 6:54 am

      You are an idiot.

    • Steven November 3, 2017, 7:40 am

If you don’t own guns, or believe in the Second Amendment, then why are you here wasting your time?

    • Gary November 3, 2017, 8:30 am

You idiot, $10 a PACK is WHY people quit smoking.
Not because of some stupid ass label. Same with the tax on Beer! But poor people buy beer and smokes. You didn’t see them put a 1000% tax on scotch or Brandy and high end cigars!! Because that’s rich people’s vices!
You dumb shit! If Anything needs a warning label, it’s YOU!
We can call them idiot stickers!
