Several years ago Remington returned to its handgun-producing roots with the introduction of
the R1. This year the company continues to evolve the lineup, adding the R1 Carry to an already
proven stable of .45 ACP-chambered 1911s. Subtle changes, built upon the reliability of a five-
inch barrel, make this handgun more carry friendly than the R1 or R1 enhanced. Bad guys don’t
knock off at dusk, so the R1 Carry remedies target acquisition in poor lighting conditions by
using Novak sights with a tritium Night Sight up front. Speed of presentation is critical, but a
handgun’s sharp edges love to hang up on covering garments at the worst possible moment. With
a de-horned frame and slide, the R-1 Carry minimizes that concern. Purchase in the worst of
environmental conditions is enhanced with 25-lpi checkering on the beavertail backstrap safety
(with memory bump), frontstrap and mainspring housing. Cocobolo grip panels and skeletonized
adjustable trigger provide the kind of look it’s a shame to keep concealed, but the lowered and
flared ejection port and target crown speak volumes about Remington’s dedication to reliability,
regardless of “fashion.” Overall length is 8.5 inches, rate of twist is 1 in 16 inches and it ships
with a pair of magazines–one seven-rounder and a bumper-padded eight-round version. I’ve
never considered an ambidextrous safety ideal for 1911 carry, but it’s there for southpaws.
MSRP is $1,299.

DO THEY MAKE A COMBAT COMANDER???

Well I liked the R1 at $6 and change. But sure wouldn’t pay double for a shorter slide. That ain’t no carry gun either. It’s as heavy as a full sized 1911, everyone knows if you iwb, the extra inch makes no difference, it’s the weight and balance. May as well carry a full sized aluminum frame para p13, if you’re going to carry that R1 carry.
Carry guns are lighter guns, 20-25 ozs. otherwise people leave them home or in their car. That’s just when you need a gun. I carry and XDS45, Have carried over 20 different guns in 43 yrs, and even a full-sized 1911, that didn’t last long. When the barrel hit’s you in the nuts, or bangs into the chair, it get’s a bit uncomfortable, and shoulder rigs don’t cut it with tee shirts down here in FL. Shields, Xds, and Glocks, that’s about it, if you want a large caliber gun. Otherwise a LCP or a Seacamp in 380, or a revolver. Or both. Just my 2 cents

Did anyone else notice this: The gun he is holding has a shorter barrel than the one she handles? It has nothing to do w/smaller v larger hands. look closer – while similar in color, actually two(2) different guns….R1 Enhanced & R1 Carry. Just say in’.

It might be time to starting thinking about getting out a little more Joe. Maybe find a nice girl? Give up that prescription? The gun he is holding has the slide locked back Joe.

I had one just to compare with the Sig Sauers I sell. Was really glad to get rid of it because it was such poor example of what a 1911 can be. Try the trigger in the Sig & the Remington at the same time. You will see what I mean.

I honestly think that the entire 1911 line of guns produced by all the companies are overpriced.

1911 people are like Glock people, they are nearly religious in their devotion to the gun.

What’s the deal with 1911 owners paying extra for a pistol to be “dehorned” and smoothed out to minimize the possibility of catching on clothing and then having these gigantic beavertail safeties hanging off the back? I have a pretty average size hand and have never had a problem with my A1 with hammer bite or anything like that. Doesn’t this big safety hinder the comfort, concealability, and convenience of a pistol intended for everyday carry?

It’s hard to see how having a beavertail longer than the extent of the fully cocked hammer makes sense. Just wondering how others feel. Thanks

I have a Rock Island , 4 inch commander size, and had a little tune up done on it. $400 plus and it shoots as good as any high priced “gotta have” 1911 I have fired. The Remington is way over priced. Of course, thanks to Obuma, everything is WAY ovder priced.

  • John January 21, 2013, 7:05 pm

For that price I’d go with a Dan Wesson CCO.

  • Sam Matterhorn January 21, 2013, 2:14 pm

Everyone says it is over priced. But are most MSRP pricing overpriced? I see the R1 for $995.95 at one shop I buy from and $979.99 at another. Then it is worth the price for me!
In the same respect I just bought a Ruger MKIII Hunter, SS, fluted 5.5″ BB, Crimson Trace and adjustable sites for $589.95…… I rarely see MSRP at a retailer beside Academy, I won’t buy crap there anyway, so, too many returns…. so what’s the issue?

  • Jeff January 21, 2013, 11:57 am

Agree way over priced. This should be in the $899 range. My gun safe if full of remmington long guns and not one was anywhere near this price. A matter of fact the 1100 was only $99 brand new.

  • nock vanderburg January 21, 2013, 10:29 am

Nice gun but to be honest….WAAYY over priced….WAYYYY over priced. I can think of about 10 guns in and under that price j would buy first…any springfield 1911…and STI….ans&wnen e series…ansig 1911….

WAAAYYYYYY over priced. And i sincerely hope they arent trying to cash in on all the panic buyingnbecause i would hate to have to sell all my remington long guns and boycott the company like i am doing with para ordinance for charging $599.00 for a bare lower for an AR-15
